give aluminum some credit. I mean you’d be 100% right on say a car wheel but indoors protected, it will stay looking good for long enough to be worth the effort. also a nice thin clear coat would do wonders.
I was told the inside of these Duals are very watch like, which the black forest is also well known for. I just wish we got the better plinth and dust covers that seemed to not make it out of germany.
Just like technics, and i am sure other brands, duals seem to have a good following and many people who will dedicate their time or only deal with duals.
Poly is correct in that raw aluminum will immediately start to oxidize. More metals will and you can see it in real time with some steels. Aluminum also does not like finger prints.
I am not going to clear it as you need to prep it and itll probably flake off after a bit. Some wax though should be fine. The flintz has sone stuff in it to protect, or so they say.
Lets see what pricing would be and if they expect it to get much cleaner. No use spending big money on an inexpensive intro to vinyl. The platter can always be lifted off and done later.
You can have a look because of the base there are still some small dealers who make something like this out of wood like this site here:
235€ doesn’t seem expensive to me for the CS 721, which was supposedly made of plastic back then.
They even offer a complete restoration, which might be a bit too much:
I am sure that you can probably have the frame made by a good carpenter in the USA.
Should be doable and would probably be a bit cheaper due to the current customs policy.
With a restoration it may be more difficult, also because the older people who were familiar with the subject at the time are retired or deceased.
I have found an instruction manual which is in German but also contains a wiring diagram which can be helpful for restoration work in the electrical area.
However, this is an EU version, which may differ slightly from the US version, but a good electrician will know this.
There are certainly still possibilities for mechanical parts, perhaps today’s Dual can still help.
There is a site for this in Germany where popular Thorens are still supplied today.
Unfortunately I don’t know the link.
These resources are actually great. The service manual was said to be long gone, but i am going to download that copy. With point and click translation on phones it shouldnt be an issue if it is german as long as context is there.
It is probably a no go to import a chassis, but that first link gave me some great ideas.
As I wait for my phono to arrive and do whatever UPS is claiming it does on customs.
I was looking at making a plinth to replace the stock plastic n’ fake veneer one. After a bunch of mental gymnastics I decidee the style that suits me best is the one pictured below from the site @Deleeh posted.
Doing a little research on the best way to build a plinth is a prime example of why its called a rabbit hole and it offers a peek at just how far fetched and deep vinyl goes. Tons of DIY, math I dont understand, resonance and transfer charts, forum threads starting from 2009, and totally opposite viewpoints with “calculations and evidence” backed findings. To be honest, a lot of impressive stuff, but as soon as one person says something there is another with a counter point. Statements such as “You want your plinth to be as dampened as possible, no such thing as too dampened its scientifically not possible!” Follow by “i dampened my table to the max and now it sounds dead and flat. I undid some and now its great!” All mass! No mass! Even for materials there are long lists of plys, composite, sandwich techniques people swear by. Ever hear of panzerholz? I didnt until yesterday.
To keep my sanity I chose a design and materials that should be pretty decent, following some universally “agreed” upon concepts. It should be decently dampened and with a lot more added mass, but nothing crazy.
It will be 4 sides of chunky chunk flamed cherry with a channel cut on the inside faces. This channel will allow me to insert the mounting plate that the main turntable chassis sits on. This plate will be a premade sandwich of richlight and birch ply. The richlight is said to be pretty dead and the birch ply has been a standard for a long time. The main chassis then sits on top of this via 4 springs that probably mostly nullify the plinth anyway. I will have to see if leaving the bottom open is viable, ill have to see what feet to use.
But that is my plan unless it turns out this part of audio is not for me.
There are so many competing schools of thought on Turntable design, it’s worse than speakers. The fact that they all still exist today, with a lot of support is amazing to me.
This is extremely true to what i found. Many of the trains of thought for turntables seem to come from loudspeaker cabinet construction and it just takes off from there.
All reports say the Dual 721 was a totl table of the day and earned its outstanding reputation. But the plastic plinths for the US market was crap compared to the german ones with the sweet fold down accessory shelf. If i can make myself a nice summer project that leans into a more well established school of thought (mass and vibration reduction) while also being as pretty as I am imagining it, then THAT is a win. I have to imagine some of this will lead to a better end sound than the stock plastic parts.
If i want to go crazy down the line i can. Some say you need to get rid of the spring suspension and bolt it all down? Fuck that! Special voltage regulators for the motor? No thanks! Turntables apparently are sensitive to cable capacitance so I may grab some ultra low capacitance Blue Jean RCAs to swap out and be happy. Anything saved here will probably be better spent on record cleaning and will probably have a much bigger impact there as well.
Not sure which model you need but check w/ me first before buying any BJ RCA’s I’ll send you all you could use, i’m up to my eyeballs in them…
I have to see how it connects undercthe table but i think it may just be rca vs the slso common dim. It needs as low capacitance as possible which BJC is known for. They list their LC-1 with a bundled ground for this use, but they also nlw have the LC-2.
I have a bunch of the LC-1. Various lengths. How many do you desire buddy. Text me. All yours. ![]()
600 is a bit steep given the “current” version is 1000.
I am looking at the Technics SL-1210 mk7 or AudioTechnica AT-LP8x myself, because spinny thing
Hello,
My trusty old Pioneer Pl300 has served me well over the last few years.
Unfortunately, I think it’s time for something new.
I’ve been looking around here and there.
The Dual CS 429/529 looked quite nice.
But when I saw the Technics Sl1012 Mk 7 and heard good things about it again and again, I thought, why not?
Does anyone happen to have one?
I haven’t bought anything yet.
A good phono stage would also be great. Currently, I’m using the IFi Phono 2, and I’ve read good things about the 3.
But I’m open to other suggestions.
