The Shit List

Have you tried something SPDIF yet? Don’t commit to a high dollar cable until you hear if there’s a worthwhile difference between SPDIF and AES. I liked the Mojo AES better but on the output both XLR and SE are good in their own way, a nice difference between the two.

Cerious Technologies makes a good and not too expensive SPDIF.

Nope. It was just at a price that I was fine gambling. Ultimately I dont trust my AES cable is good and seeing as my issues with my current chain as issues that can arrise from bad digital I figured I would entertain trying a new cable if it was from teh shit list and that cheap.

I’ve been happy with my Kimber D60’s, but I’m a bit of a Kimber shill.

Edit:
Kimber manufactures all of their wire (from raw material, not prefab cables). They sound good to my ears, and they’re made in USA for those that care.

@M0N while I don’t have a surefire way to test out the synergy between ms3.2 and brise, I’m pretty confident it works very well with it. I don’t feel there’s any disjointedness or anything odd with the sound whatsoever… So fwiw, imo it works just as well with the 3.2 as it does the 3.1

Very early impressions, but listening to the MySphere 3.2 on the low Z, high gain setting I’ve been pretty impressed so far. There’s a bit more slam and bass presence than I was used to coming from the Crayon. It does remind me a little of the V281 with tonal weight, but it’s maybe not quite as smooth and a little more neutral/clean, at least with the current settings. I never heard the MySphere on the V281, though, so can’t be sure. I’ve been a little surprised by the articulation and texture in the mids and lower treble.

So far, just running USB to the internal DAC, which I’ve been told by the guy I bought it from is approximately Yggy level. Not sure how much truth there is to that, but I’ll eventually get around to trying the P6P and Berk RS1.

Guess what? It’s really mostly done. Yeah I can’t believe it either, I finally got the desire to write about the cables and made sure I was mostly happy with rankings, and adding and removing a few things here and there. Yes it’s not fully done, I got lazy with the 2ch section, and I also haven’t finished the ramblings at the bottom, and yes I’ve not done all the shortlisted pairings yet. But I’m mostly happy with it

That also means I’m really really considering making it a public article. While I don’t really know if that’s the best thing to do or not, the main driving reason would be more traffic to the main page. While having it as unlisted article is fine for people here, given it’s a page packed with a strong amount of items, it’s going to show up in a lot more random searches on google, and that could be an overall benefit for the site more than just keeping it unlisted where mostly only anyone here would find it.

Does this increase it’s chances of it being used in the way I don’t want it to be used, absolutely, but I have to give up on that thought because I’ve put the disclaimers in there already, so that’s really all I can do anyways (do I even have the right to attempt to dictate how people use an article anyways? no not really, I just want to make sure people don’t make a poor choice if they treat it as your typical tier list). The bigger issue I have in my mind is “does this list stick with the general sonus community ethos, or does it undermine the standards the community have set for themselves”. Not sure why but I feel as though a list like this inherently kinda goes against why we put the site together and why people choose to participate here rather than elsewhere, and the last thing I’d want to do is potentially attract the wrong crowd to the site or create the perception of the site for what it isn’t by an article (if that’s even a concern in the first place). But I’d actually like some weigh in on this if I should keep it private or put it public, basically asking the question of “would making something like this more publicly accessible be good or bad for the site.” Perhaps I overestimate the power of perceived “tier lists” on influencing potential new eyes on the site, but I’m just worried about how mindless things can become after seeing what’s happened on a few other platforms lol. Wouldn’t be the typical article compared to what’s already released on the site, so don’t know if it fits as a public article or not

I’ll probably finish the shortlist before I actually publish, and hopefully go through it with a spellcheck since for some reason the spellchecker on my browser stops working when I load the editor for the article

Jokes on you, we are all using it the way you dont want for cables already. /s (kinda)

That’s why I’ve given up on caring about that lol

Not concerned about people here, I just would be worried if someone just saw something like mysphere or shang at the top of the headphone list and thought “well that’s the best so I’ll get that” and not be prepared for what they’re going to get into lol and not understanding why/how that’s there. Which sounds stupid, but I genuinely read people doing that on other forums with lists such as these

yah… sorry about that (just cant be arsed to realy read up on cables tbh)… FWIW, I think a disclaimer going “the general tiers matter far more than the ranking inside of them” as well as maybe disclaimers on certain items (like sus and utopia) going “these are really pairing picky, so this only talks about them at their best, not their average” may be a good move in curbing that a bit more

IMO, the note I talked about, even if its just “this ranking is on a 40k+ chain, not even a 10k one where they are more equal” may be a decent idea

Have multiple paragraphs and constant reminders for the synergy and pairing thing lol, so covered there (and a literal note next to each item on how demanding it is). Good idea on the internal ranking suggestion, I already have a section covering that but I should make that more clear

I just don’t want to get too specific for my own sanity, and I feel like using prices like that would likely put some people off (since technically cost doesn’t automatically equal quality, and just throwing money at something doesn’t consider synergy)

fair enough. TBH its been a while since I’ve looked at the page for anything other than “wait, what was that interconnect I am suppose to keep an eye out for called again?”

I added more interconnects to keep your eye on lol, cardas clear beyond, zenwave d4, and harmonic tech armour link iii lol (and removed the synergistic research one since I think they do better power cables than IC)

Yah, its a tough one. Cause ofc price doesnt equal quality, but quality does kind equal price. Frankly for stuff like shang, mysphere, and sus I think it may be worth while to do a kind of “this is what it took to get these to their positions on the list” but I also dont know whats even on the article now.

for that matter, let me check out the page and see what it even looks liek now

If only everyone who posted an article online gave this much careful thought (and
work) into it. You’re the man, Mon.

Can you add a “ive read the disclaimers” check box before the rankings appear. Reading those sections now it just dawned on me idk ive ever read them before :joy:

Most people dont have enough vivance to write an article like this

Really I bet most people publishing an article put careful thought into it, there’s absolutely those that don’t that still gain traction, but really I do think you’re downplaying the amount of effort most people put into writing about their audio gear. This one is just long, that doesn’t automatically mean it’s as thought out as it is long lol

LOL that’s actually a good bit, let me see if I can do that, although I think a pop up might be intrusive, but I have an idea otherwise

maybe not thought out but it does show focus

I pretty much see the * as @M0N only real seal of approval. lol
