@kerls Wow this is super unique! I’m definitely going to check out more of their stuff! Cheers
Here’s a few things from what I have been listening to:
Been going through some of the feels… man this song hits so hard. Whole album is great but this is definitely my favorite.
This has honestly one of the best riffs I have ever heard. The energy is there! Classic banger.
Imminence is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. I love the way the lead singer plays the violin and blends it so well to produce such haunting and emotional melodies. They released a deluxe version of the album it is on this year, Heaven In Hiding. It is an amazing album. It definitely has a bit more of a polished and produced sound to me, and while I’m undecided whether I like that as much as Turn The Light On, by no means am I criticizing it. It is one of my favorites right now, I keep looping through it! If you enjoy beautiful melodies and deep feels blending with the heavy stuff, definitely check these guys out.
I liked these guys back in the day, the first two EPs, Victimized and then Life // Lost but fell off after that. Never cared much for their subsequent releases, but The Death We Seek is fantastic. The choruses don’t feel fake or forced and that was my biggest issue with the stuff after L//L.
This album is great. It does sound like the guitars are brickwalling at times, though. The production could definitely be better.
I know I already posted this elsewhere, but I just cannot get over it. I really like these releases for Meteora 20th anniversary.
As much as people like to rip on Linkin Park and say they aren’t “true” metal or something, these are the bands that really set the stage and influenced a lot of modern metal today and the things that metal bands do. I would not be into metal if it were not for these guys.
A roundup of some things I have been listening to recently:
The new Sleep Token album is here! And man, is it interesting. It really pulled me in. It has such a hypnotic pop/jazzy and funky take on metal, and I love it. I wish I could post all of the songs here, but you will just have to go check out the album for yourself. This is only a small snippet, although it is probably my favorite song from the album.
This single is so groovy! Love the beat, and the vocals almost remind me of La Dispute for some reason if they were a bit heavier. Either way, I would love to see this band take more of this sound direction.
I guess I am late to the party with Vildhjarta. But man, just everything about how uniquely they combine the drums, guitars, and vocals… whoo! It’s fantastical and otherworldly. I can’t really describe it, you just have to listen to understand.
The new Cattle Decapitation album is very interesting. I’m honestly not sure if I like it or not, but I can certainly respect how well it was done. I think it’s somehow different than their previous work? Death Atlas sounded much darker to me, this one has a more bright sound to it possibly? Regardless, it will be interesting to see how it ages.
That’s interesting, I felt that both albums were pretty equal on terms of brightness/darkness, but it changed the presentation of voices and instruments: on Terrasite voices are definitely more forward, the drums seem to be more well defined and slightly more forward, possibly even the guitar too.
On Death Atlas voices do come off as more distant and pushed back, and drums sound more congested and “smoothed over”.
Also, here’s what I’ve been listening to:
Possibly my favourite Endseeker album, it’s either this (Flesh Hammer Prophecy) or The Harvest, Mount Carcass was nice but production was just ok, kind of mushy.
The new Enforced album (War Remains) is pretty fun, nothing groundbreaking but production definitely improve from their previous album (Kill Grid)
I’ve been really enjoyng Humanity’s Last Breath as of lately, Valde was great but Abyssal is IMO their best album.
Similar to Type O Negative, I really like this album. Vocals are, of course, the stand out part. Could see this becoming one of my favourite albums this year.
Another possible candidate for top 5 favourite albums this year, production is not the greatest but the songwriting, composition and overall structure of the album absolutely more than make up for it, really great album.
Yeah, I can hear that. Maybe that is what is giving me the impression of it being brighter. I usually tend to be sensitive to midrange and vocals around those areas anyways.
Interesting, I don’t think I have heard of them before. Not sure why but the harsh vocals remind me of the older Trivium stuff a bit. Those drums are really fun.
Yeah, it sounds pretty good. Those are some awesome riffs combined with the vocals!
Yeah this sounds very heavy and chunky. I dig the vocals too.
Oh yeah, I can definitely hear the similarities. Nice vocals for sure, although I think the guitar really helps support them well on this track.
Ooo, I really like the atmosphere this one has, it feels very epic. Some nice melodies mixed in there as well. I might have to explore this one more.
Yeah, I think it got a little bit weak around the middle, leaning a bit too much into the modern pop side of things, and perhaps a bit weak lyrically as well. But the tail end definitely got back on track very well and absolutely ended with a bang. Some may hate it for its genre-defying or genre-compiling, but I think that’s what makes them good. They do what they want, and I think that at least deserves some respect. Some music reviewer compared them to Imagine Dragons but for metal and I really disagree with that comparison, despite it being very funny.
I haven’t kept up with the metal scene since the 90s, but I saw a recommendation for Fire In The Distance’s latest album on a music site, and decided to try them out. I assumed I’d give them a few minutes and switch to another band, proving to myself that death metal is just not for me. But I really liked it. I’m not really a fan of “growling”, but I think it works with their music, and the music itself is pretty melodic.
High octane blackened trash that is actually produced pretty well.
I agree. The drums also, while nothing crazy, really complete the atmosphere.
Definitely a very strong aspect of the album, while subtle, it feels kind of “mystical” and misterious. I don’t really know how to explain it, almost ethereal in it’s presentation.
For some reason it reminds me of Kardashev’s most recent album, Liminal Rite, but I really don’t know why lol. I want to say it’s because they both feel kind of melanchonic, but I’m not fully sure.
Figured I’d share this with the metal community here. This guy’s channel is a treasure trove and… he has hi res recordings especially of Philly concerts to go along with the videos if you’re into live recordings.
It’s funny, I was just listening to King Gizzard yesterday and wondering what one of their shows would be like, given that each album tends to adopt a particular musical style. I’m looking forward to watching this.
Periphery is going to be doing a small clubs tour this fall and said they’d be playing unique sets each night. I got tickets to both nights in Denver (Nov 6-7) and it’s at one of the best venues in town! So pumped! The Bluebird is like 400 capacity, so it’s only going to be real fans there. The acoustics are incredible and the staggered leveling allows you to be much closer to the artists. I’ve seen Angel Du$t, Blessthefall, Enter Shikari, Every Time I Die, Trash Boat, Turnstile, and Vein.fm there and each performance has been fantastic.
Let’s fucking go, my dude! I saw them in March up here in Milwaukee, was supposed to go to Radar Festival at the end of the month and attend their panel (got tickets for both) but can’t due to unforeseen circumstances. Scored tickets to both nights in Chicago and will be staying by a friend down there to not have to hit the road immediately afterwards. Bummed we ain’t getting Plini opening, not sure the next time he’ll be stateside. Stoked nonetheless
