I was just listening to this track from The Rippingtons off their Wild Card album, and realized that I have not shared here in awhile.
Seems I have found my thread lol. Nice recommendations here.
I really enjoy this group - Hopefully I’ll be able to catch them live some time.
There are a couple “Live” sets on the interwebs, and this is one of the more recent that I’ve found.
Not saying that this particular song or style is my favorite but dang i swear that there is something in the rivers of colombia because out of all the newest music ive heard from south america Columbia produces the MOST creative musciscians and honestly imo the best right now!
Yes, I agree. I love the net and the ability to explore the world and find cool music. I bought Sagans album and, as you said, its not my fav but it is very good and super interesting. So much great music coming from SA it’s crazy!
with a slight fear of spamming this thread too much I do want to share this new to me band with a psych-pop indie feel, Petite Amie
Time to start sharing some of my favorite artists en castellano
I’ll go by genre, today its going to be only hip hop, then when I have time I’ll make some other posts with my favorite rock, jazz, pop, folk, etc. artists.
(if you guys think the post is too long I’ll hide the videos in spoiler format, just tell me)
Canserbero: In the underground rap scene he’s considered the best rapper. His disfonic voice with a heavy venezuelan accent and rough beats can make it hard to get into his music, but his clever lyrics, poetry and storytelling were enough to make him a legend yet to be bested. He’s my favorite artist ever. Rest In Peace.
Kase.O: What an absolute legend, considered the best rapper in spain even by the other spanish rappers, he’s just very skilled tbh, former frontman of the group Violadores del Verso, also worth checking out.
Violadores del verso: This song got me into rap lol, I didn’t listen to rap before 2006’s vivir para contarlo.
Apache: former duo of canserbero, they made the group Apa y Can and released one record before Can died. His music kinda speaks for itself, never loses his cool.
With Can
By himself
Lil Supa: Another crack from venezuela, is said to always tell the truth. His styles varies a lot through his records but it never lacks flow and is usually more American Boom Bap inspired.
Nach: Very skilled lyricist and storyteller from spain, he’s not only a rapper he’s also a literal poet.
The beat kinda sucks tbh, but Nach does something very interesting, the song is divided in 3 verses, each one using only words with 1 vowel. Canserbero has a song with a similar concept called “el mundo ABC”.

This one has my favorite rap lyrics ever, Nach uses analogies to compare “the streets” with wild animals over a jazz beat.

If you understand spanish please look for his song called “manifiesto” HEAVY STUFF
Foyone: Not so long ago became very popular with his rap sin corte series of videos, they’re certified hood classics, Foyone style uses very dark themes and heavy swearing.

Some cyphers: Freestyle rapping is very popular in latin america, almost moreso than regular hip hop, I’ll close the post with some random cyphers.
Errantes Rec label rappers, they’re from Quintana Roo, Mexico.
These dudes are some of the most popular freestylers in mexico, they always do very well in La Batalla de los Gallos (improvisation duels)
Lets end with some more Supa
I kinda feel bad for all the great rappers I didn’t put here like SFDK, Akapellah, McKlopedia, Morodo, 7 notas, Tino el pinguino, etc… but otherwise this post would never end.
Happy new year
Some old school reggeaton, this is nothing like what most people think all reggeaton is. New style reggeaton is what sucks as, old school one was fucking fire tho. It’s like old school hip hop vs mumble rap, it’s completely different
Calle 13- la fokin moda
Camilo Sesto, old school ballad singer. Beautiful stuff. Nowadays when you hear romantic music/ballads it’s usually a acoustic guitar and a singer but old school spanish singers really had some more orchestral things going on. Was always awesome shit.
Thats a legendary vocalist, theres a rock band called camilo septimo that I dislike lol has nothing to do with ballads
Now heres a legendary composer that shaped the tango and jazz scene from Argentina
Funnily enough, the first time I’d ever heard Libertango was as the background music for this Flash game prototype that would eventually get fully built out into the game World of Goo:
…anyway, yeah, it’s a great song.
That track you shared is awesome - I wonder if it helped to inspire ‘Diferente’ by Gotan Project.
It is also possible that I am hearing things, but for me there is a nice resemblance in style.
I have been trying to explore some spanish/latin music myself, my tennis team is overwhelmingly spanish-speaking so I have been exposed to quite a bit of different music, heh. Here are some that I have been enjoying:
Apparently this is a super popular song.

I’ve been enjoying Joan Chamorro and his Sant Andreu Jazz band from Catalonia for several years. Especially like Alba Armengou, Andrea Motis and especially Rita Payes,
who has done albums with her mother on guitar. Joan (male, btw) has taught many kids and it has been fun to see/hear them as they mature and hone their skills.
Love the sound on the second song. I dig it.
