My first experience with this type of my speaker in my home, third experience listening to them and it’s hard to put my finger in them given they are a chameleon with nearly every genre, recording quality, or source I’ve thrown at it in the limited time I’ve had them.
Still working on placement of them in the room (using the generally accepted principles of OB placement), with and without the use of subwoofers, and different amps to drive their 12 ohms.
Lol… if i were to stumble across the M3 Triode Master (on the East Coast, especially in red) i would purchase it too and add it to the collection in the living room, i like the sound character THAT much They work for me and my music choices along w/ playing well w/ equipment I have on hand.
As i settle into my preferences, i have a very small list of speakers I’m prepared to jump on at certain price points and my M4 TM’s bigger brother is on that list
So it took my all day today to rearrange the room and place my speakers hopefully in a better position.
I followed a rule of thumb of 4x4x4x4 from a listening room setup YouTube video (forgot which one). Basically make both my speakers symmetrical from the wall. 4 feet with some change away from the side wall and 4 feet away from the wall behind it for both speakers. The speakers minimum about 4 feet from each other. I am 4 feet away from the speakers. The only thing I couldn’t make 4 feet is the wall behind me which is 2.5 feet.
Going to listen to this setup for a little while if I like it and maybe mess with the speaker placement if I want something else. Only room treatment was random placement of acoustic foam that was already there before I rearrange the furniture. I do still have some acoustic foam behind me on the back wall, so I hope that helps, but probably not since it doesn’t absorb bass.
I will also start with no toe for this setup since a reviewer recommend no toe in as too much toe in with the Platimon is too much detail, but honestly I really love the Platimon because it was the most detail audio device I ever listened to at home. But no toe in really open up the music and expanded the soundstage. It could also be I actually put the speakers 4 feet away from the walls. Anyway, whatever I did, soundstage really really open up lol.
If I like what I hear, I may start installing the 1st two reflection points besides the speakers. Will get rid of the TV, but only time will tell. Planning to install bass traps and cloud, but don’t know when. Will figure out the next step I will do, after getting use to this new setup.
Add on: notice the speakers are actually facing a little away, fix it and made sure to it’s fixing straight just to try no toe in for now. I kinda liked the speakers when they were facing out toward the room as the soundstage felt a little more expansive then no toe-in, but will give no toe-in a chance for now. Also, I tried walking in between the speakers and slowly walk away from. That was pretty cool lol. Also kinda worried about putting the tubes behind the speakers, bass is pretty big sounding. When I get rid of the TV in the room, I will move the audio chain further away from the speakers.
I have heard multiple arguments for and against this. Just remember the further away you go the longer the speaker line runs and great speaker cable can be expensive.
If you have so much bass you are vibrating equipment nearby i would reconsider your life choices ….just joking i too enjoy some deep bass.
Also, i have posted this before but just another method for you to consider for speaker and seating placement.
And this
Here is your REL video for connecting subs which also may influence or not your equipment placement
Eventually you will need this video
Just because…
Cleaning using Deoxit products, because you own tubes
Thanks, I do remember a video you shared with me when I first got my Polk R200 which was New Record L.O.T.S of soundstage video. That’s when I first learn about toe-in without remembering what the word was called last year. I forgot how very useful that video is.
Since I swap my furniture from 1 side and move it to the other side, it’s now 12ft wide and 12.5ft depth. So I will start about 4 feet away from the back wall and move the speakers 1 foot away from me until satisfied. The problem is no leaning on the chair cause that will put my ears closer to the back wall. The speakers are still going to be in same position which is 4 feet away from the wall, but knowing I could get away with 3 feet away from the side wall may help since I do value soundstage more and putting the speakers more further away from each other like my old setup, but this time the speakers are not in the corner.
I am not too sure if bass is going to be an issue since the speaker stands is the vibrating control with the isolation ball feet but I remember I put my ear behind the bass ports just out of curiosity when I first got the Platimon back in January and the bass was earth shattering powerful (it might be my memory exaggerating it, so I gotta test it again later today). Yesterday 1st hour impression I listen to about 70db for my first hour impression and didn’t really notice the increase of microphonic. I seen people put their tube amps right next to their speaker, but they are mono tube amps. I think it might be ok, the next experiment is to have me lay on the floor next to my tubes to see if bass is actually going there or maybe it only travel in the above floor level maybe? If I do feel that pressure at where the tube amp is, I might swap the DAC stack and the tube preamp position so the preamp will be left and the DAC will be to the right. But I guess the easiest way is to listen for microphonic is to crank that baby loud with some really bassy music and hear what happens. If I don’t hear anything different negatively it might be ok.
Watching the 2nd NRD video got me an idea. Maybe not a mattress, but I think I could fit something there, but will probably look more into DIY bass traps to know what kind of material to stuff there.
Thanks again for the videos recommendation. I know for sure I made a good step forward because I can actually move my speakers now to actually experiment with soundstage, toe-in, and speaker placement.
Add on: I actually really dig the bed chair kind of idea from the NRD video on small rooms . If I can lean on the back wall with that kind of setup, I can have more room to play with speaker placement and better comfort.
If you zoom in you can see my crazy ICs and USB cable coming from the gaming PC off to the right…and an awesome headphone stand that is too beautiful to put headphones on so I have it smack dab in the middle of my desk so I can look at it all the time
I’m still working on getting things moved over to the nice rack. The panamax on the bottom right has my PC and monitor and stuff plugged into it and is plugged into the outlet on the other side of the room (not that that probably matters a whole lot)
I see a ton of “best practices” being used in that set-up and it brings a tear of joy to my heart Very Very nice snd clean set-up i love the sandcrawler…
I agree, beautiful beautiful space. Very zen and oozes with attention and lots of effort.
How does one have such a clean desk?
Do you guys do work on them…
Came back after three weeks of traveling, flipped sides in my office so the system is on the opposite wall of where it used to be and I’ll now have maximum flexibility in placement. It does have the window which the other wall didn’t have but I figured some days I’ll sure be in the mood for less room treatment and just looking outside.
Next few weeks will be about learning the room and measuring it, then the amp will arrive and I’ll start treatment piece by piece.
Also need a new rack because the Levante is absolutely huge and won’t fit on my current one.
