Short High End DAC Comparison PT.1 & PT.2, Source Gear Progression, and General Thoughts

Exasound used to be popular around the mid 2010s, although I haven’t really heard much mention of them since, I’ve heard some before, but I really can’t seem to remember anything about them so that’s not very helpful is it lol. I think one of their claims to fame was a more consumer/hifi oriented focus on multichannel dacs

What does this mean, like 5.1 type multichannel? Like L-C-R?

Typically they offered 8ch dacs. I never really explored them that much, I just know they used ESS chips for that reason, since it worked well for multichannel, don’t know more than that

Hmm… didn’t even know such and animal existed.

Oh I forgot to mention

Given how things have ended up lining up, the current state of where I’m at, and feeling the need to put out at least something, there’s going to be a part 3.

I’ll try to get it out in a few months, could be sooner, could be later, depends on the amount of time I have and when things decide to get here

I will say this might be more like the original part 1 rather than 2 (in some aspects), but I won’t say more than that

I’m going to read it like 10x… I think I’ve already read through pt 1/2 on hifig at least a dozen times each.

I’ll try to make this one a bit more readable and less dry toast for you then so it’s hopefully a bit more engaging lol, cause honestly I can’t say I would want to read my past two more than a few times lol

I honestly thought both parts were nice to digest. But that may be because I tend to think through things logically, so your writing style just so happens to work great with how my brain processes information lol. However you write it though, it will be greatly appreciated by all of us.

IMO I think the point has less to do with wordiness or engaging but you’ve heard far far more quality dacs than any of us. We desperately are looking for an unbiased source of “truth”. Really what are you real thoughts on the products relative to one another within common price intervals. The more details the better and the more of your personal thoughts and impressions the better.

I don’t think I can really deny this one at this point lol, I’d still like to though. Just sounds pretentious as hell when you put it that way lol

Aren’t we all. Well, you won’t find it here lol

Yes more information is always good, although it doesn’t have to come from me, really more info from anyone on the forum is a positive thing lol

Less than a sourth of truth i just like them because i feel like its one of the few sources i can trust to honestly say their feelings. Agree with what you hear or not, i have no doubt youre accurately saying how you feel which is pretty damn refreshing when every other high end dac review seems to be from paid magazines…

Sure, but speaking my mind doesn’t automatically make what comes out of my mind unbiased, and what does come out is an opinion not a truth, just want to make that clear lol

I was trying to say, there is no truth, but just having honestly is a nice step up from normal

I don’t really know if most of those writing about high end dacs are dishonest, wouldn’t really think that’s the case, I just don’t know if I’d call most “reviews” on high end dacs meaningful though

My big problem with most of them is just that im not sure if they are honest or not. Paying for good reviews is so damned prevalent its kinda hard for me to trust any publication without a publicly disclosed income scheme

For what it’s worth, I found the PT.2 really helpful. Even just having a broad strokes of “these DACs still compete for the price,” “these DACs are a couple tiers above these other DACs,” along with signature/pairings/etc was super-useful for me to even just get a handle on what options even made sense for where I was trying to go.
