An oldie but a goodie. Loved this well over 20 years but had pretty much forgotten about this band by the time I got into hifi a few years ago.
Remembered them the other week and have listened to their first few albums many times since. I bloody love the bass guitar on this record. Not just the playing but it’s tone and how it is represented in the recording ![]()
Great track!
The Dark Knight (2008) Soundtrack
There is a moment after the strings build up in the first track, around 3:30 where there is so much detail in the low end that I knew was there, but only recently got the chance to fully savor.
One of my favourite 90s albums, Elastica, by Elastica
Never heard of them! Will give them a listen. The first thing I thought of was Elastigirl from The Incredibles.
Everyone knew the big Britpop names but for my money the more interesting albums were always the ones from smaller bands on the fringes. They remained more indie and less pop.
Been listening to Happy Mondays which is my latest discovery of that era. It’s amazing how many band we hadn’t heard of even though they were around in my formative years.
because we lacked the internet.
Oh excellent band! If you are going to Madchester music I would also recommend The Stone Roses and 808 State. More contemporary with Elastica I also really like The Bluetones
They were bigger in the UK (number 1 album) than the US. Justine from Elastica was in a relationship with Damon from Blur so they were the Britpop power couple, but after they broke up, Justine lost her mojo and Elastica collapsed. I’ve often wondered if Damon helped write some of the songs.
I’d bought the album when I lived in London, and then moved to Chicago right after that. When I got to the US, this video for Connection was on heavy rotation on MTV so you might recognize it. Those of you in the UK or Europe may not recognize it because they had a completely different video outside the US. I had no idea until I watched the UK version just now.
Fantastic album:

I think she had more than enough talent to have written them herself. She was a founding member of Suede, and left to set up Elastica to find space for her own music which was a lot heavier than Suede could accommodate. Suede itself was just so full of talent! Amazing group. Anyway. She then, according to wikipedia:
“Frischmann spent the next few years developing artist M.I.A., whom she discovered. M.I.A. was Frischmann’s friend and flatmate. Frischmann co-wrote and produced M.I.A.'s demos for her first album, Arular, most notably its 2003 single “Galang”.
Which I had no idea about until fact checking myself for this answer ![]()
She seems not to have been happy with fame and her way out was to get out of the public eye, go to art school in the US and eventually settle in California. Interesting person.
That’s amazing, I had no idea about her involvement with M.I.A.
I’ve started to add tracks to my Qobuz new music playlist as/when me and the Mrs are watching a TV show or movie and the music catches my ear (usually because I like the production, not necessarily the music).
This is one that I caught at the weekend. I also added some Snoop Dog and R.E.M. - none of these are my taste from the little I have been exposed to but I find a good system allows me to appreciate music for it’s production, in isolation of perceived musical merit.
One of my favourite bands. One of my favourite albums. I rarely listen to the Pumpkins because I have had it in my head years now that they need tubes.
Whipped out my LD II and plugged in my trusty 560s.
Qobuz > Rivo > SU-6 > Pontus 15th > LD II > 560s
I had started to think that my memory of Pumpkins needing tubes wasn’t as clear as I had thought but damn, this just sounds so different and good! They really do need, or at least benefit from, tubes.
Not as good as my old '“Pumpkins chain” but it has reminded me that there is a time and a place for tubes still for me.
Old chain:
Foobar > Hugo TT 1 > Kinki THR-1 > LD III (King Tubes) > 560s
This a bit of musical comedy, but it’s actually pretty brilliant.
