I had no idea this had been re-released.
Unfortunately whoever remastered it used a ton of digital processing I assume to remove the tape noise, and I much prefer the vinyl rip I have of the original album.
Still worth a listen if you’ve never heard it Brian May Eddie Van Halen, the drummer from REO Speed wagon and a Bassist who’s name I don’t remember.
They also stuck what must be about every take from the recording session on the 2nd disk.
I missed the original release, as I didn’t get into Queen until The Works came out the year after, and had no idea who Van Halen were until 1984 came out, so there was no way I’d have gambled my pocket money on 2 randos called Brian May and Eddie Van Halen.
I also have no memory of the TV show that inspired this either, so this gap in my childhood is fascinating to me.
I didn’t hear it until a few years later, I remember the TV Show, but the album (technically it was an EP) I wouldn’t have heard if I hadn’t been at university a few years later, and it was difficult to find and buy even then.
Music discovery for anything not front and center pre-internet was a total crap shoot, either you heard it on the radio or a friend played the record/tape for you, so I’m not surprised you missed it.
It’s interesting because outside the single release it was pretty much just a jam session, and they are really just having fun, and it’s not typical Queen or Van Halen fair. I’m not sure I have the stomach to go through the sessions on the second disk in their entirety, but the few I spot listened to were actually less messed with and in some ways more interesting, despite the obvious flaws.
It’s been pretty good this year for some modern hip hop releases. Quarter 1 releases have been pretty good, but this Denzel Curry mixtape just been too fire. My favorite part of the mixtape is the transition to G’Z Up all the way to Cole Pimp was insane for me. The interlude after each song just got a perfect transition to each other. Especially the transition from Lunatic Interlude to Sked was way too hype because Lunatic Interlude builds up and then transitioning to Sked that starts off the song with a bass drop. That was
It’s probably my highest pick for album of the year even though it’s only a mixtape. It’s only Q3, so I’m just seeing if anyone is going to top this mixtape with half the year left.
Very interesting piece, and wow what a workout for your system. It’s very well recorded, incredibly dynamic. Sounds pretty great on my setup, using my Atrium at this moment.
Np, glad you enjoyed it! Its thunderous sound will punch listeners in the guts on the first strike on those Chinese drums if not prepared. After listening on my speaker system and being amazed by its deep staging and incredible impact on those Chinese drums, the first headphone I reached out to test was the Atrium Closed and that was incredibly amazing as well. Poem Of The Chinese Drum is one of my new reference track that I really enjoy.
Released today…
Mike Dawes could play pretty much anything and I’d listen to it.
But there is a lot of really good material on it, and the recordings are all excellent masters.
I have no idea why roon decides this is classical…
