You listened to Guru’s Jazzmatazz album? I love the fusion of jazz and hip hop
I haven’t heard this until you shared it…I like it. It reminds me a bit of CL Smooth and Pete Rock…
I do love some old school hip hop, thinking about jazzmatazz made me think of paid in full
Rakim is probably one of the most underrated lyricists ever. His album “The 18th Letter” is crazy good.
I wouldn’t call him underrated personally. He’s usually in the top 5 and gets a ton of love and credit within hip hop.
I remember picking up 18th Letter when it was released. Really solid for a comeback record. It’s Been A Long still pops into my head all the time.
Underrated as far as commercially is what I guess I was trying to convey. The 18th Letter was great. The self titled track and “Remember That” were my 2 favorites, though It’s Been A Long Time is also great.
If you enjoy jazz rap just wanted to share some of my favorite modern jazz rap

I’ve had this track on repeat 3x in a row just now so I better put it up…
I’ll have to check those out…though I do not like Kendrick Lamar at all.
unfortunate you feel that way but I understand the perspective. personally hes in my top 10 liist of my favorite rappers of all time. but hip hop being one genre I’ve only truely learned to appreciate within the past 5 years my taste mostly leans relativey modern when iit comes to honestly most genres of music admittedly. but the other 2 artists especially the nujabes song should be a lot more palatable.
I actually really liked the Nujabes track. I just genuinely don’t like Kendrick Lamar’s attitude more than anything else. But for younger folks that haven’t been around the golden age of hip-hop, the perspective is different. Music is subjective of course, so I understand where you are coming from.
Nujabes is the lo-fi king, Samurai Champloo soundtrack is a legit classic. RIP
I see that. I think I really appreciate my position on hip hop a lot these days nd personally enjoying a lot of weird experimental genres as I grew up with experimental indie music mostly avoiding hip hop as a genres myself as I grew up when crunk and bling rap were the big genres which to this day I still genuinely hate. I only listened to a lot of old school rap and mostly stuff pre 2004 my favorite hip hop artists. growing up were outkast, MF DOOM, nujabes, j dilla, jurassic 5 , Nas, rakim, tupac and biggie. but recent hip hop really started getting a bit more fun more emotional less trying to act tough for the streets and artists just doing whatever the fuck they want and trying to carve their own sound in the genre have me really entuiged and payiing attention to this genre a lot these days. kendrick, denzel curry, JID , brockhampton, injury reserve, and probably tyler the creator. are my favorites for this era of hip hop
RIP
I wanna say he does share the crown with ddilla as both really are the inspirations for the lofi hipp hop sound
As far as modern-ish stuff, I love Lupe Fiasco. Kanye actually was still a beatmaker back when Lupe released his 1st album “Food and Liquor”, which was co produced by Common as well. Great album if you haven’t checked it out.
I have heard that album actually and throughly enjoy it. ive listened to a fair amount of lupe fiasco stuff after I heard him on a B.o.Bl track and really liked his voice
Relistened to The Water[s] by Mick Jenkins tonight, solid relisten. Great beat selection, nice conception, and fantastic lyricism with a strong metaphor game. Listening with the X00 Ebony and the sub bass is real nice, extremely relaxing tape overall (except for the last track lol). Sad he hasn’t really followed this project up as well as I think he could have, but at least he has some great singles here and there since this project.
If you are a fan of jazzy, relaxed, trap beats and some strong voiced lyricism give this a look.

Kick, push, kick, push, coasssst………
That is a great album.
