That is true lol. Although I wonder if I’ll really be able to test tubes for a while considering I’m trying to just get a grip on the fact that both the bottle head crack and senheiser 6xx are new to me. And also of course more than testing just trying to enjoy the music haha
Had to respond to this in my phone because wifi is whack atm
The tubes are burned in so at least Jose doesn’t have that to factor in. I’ve spent many many hours with each one. I had my favourites for sure but one of the many things I love about that amp is how it’s character can change so much with the different tubes. So I would switch quite often just to keep things fresh.
SO I SWITCHED THE FRONT TUBE AND HOLY SHIT. I CAN’T Even. I AM FUCKING LOVING THE SENHEISER WITH THE BOTTLE HEAD CRACK. ITS MUCH MORE DETAILED THAN YESTERDAY WITH THE CHANGE OF TUBES, MORE TRANSPARENT SOUNDING TO ME BUT JUST AS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL. IT’S LEGIT SURPRISING HOW DETAILED IT IS, WHILE BEING WARM AND FAIRLY LAID BACK. Also because mids are presented in such a more forward fashion than I’m used to they present detail so differently too.
I make bold claims all the time. It’s what I do  however there’s certain things that are cemented in stone for me
My main reference are my lovely focal alpha 80 speakers, the one and only thing I ever loved as much as them are my pacific blue Andros, and everything else clears, LSA HP2, trinity trio were close seconds at best. But the senheiser with the crack IS 100% SOMETHING I ALREADY LOVE AS MUCH AS MY SPEAKERS AND ANDROS
It’s legit surprising how GOOD these are, the soul, the emotion, the way vocals are presented and honestly the entire headphone presentation of forward ass mids with slightly laid back sound is super frickin good so far
you have just discovered the magic of driver rolling, most of the change sonically will come from changing the driver tube. I recommend finding a solid power tube and sticking to it and just roll drivers when you want a different sound. in my case I stuck with the bendix 6080wb and never looked back with my crack
How much difference does OTL vs SET vs Triode topology make in how the 600 series responds? I only have C9 and WA-8, and have never owned an OTL, so I’m intrigued. I have really enjoyed the 600 so far, though, on V200, C9, and WA-8.
Had a couple OTL’s and a couple SET’s and it doesn’t seem to have a particular preference in either direction. Just tends to take on the characteristics of the amp and if the synergy is there the topology doesn’t matter much. IME.
i think it is more dependant on the amp rather than the topology.
the crack with my 6xx i’d describe as having lots of warmth, very smooth with a fairly wide stage and just really musical.
with my eddie current it is less warm and smooth with more of a focus on detail, a more natural timbre with better tonal density and impact. just a overall deeper and more open stage. Still musical sounding but for entirely different reasons.
This is extremely surprising, because by looking at the tubes one would expect the big ass one to cause the biggest changes or something. In fact I almost thought that the front one probably didn’t matter much!
Ahhhhhh gotcha so the big boi in the back is the main source of power, VEEERY interesting. Yeah I think I’ll stick to the mullard in the back since don recommended it
Definitely NOT subtle, that probably surprised me the most. How big a difference the tube really makes to the entire sound of the system
Also for the tube I’m using honestly not so sure, but based on the font color I think it’s the US one. Let me take a Pic, sorry if there’s dust, still haven’t been dusting as much as I should. And my mom dosent touch this area much except when she moves shit around and breaks my statues
Also, I work at 5 am, Waka up at 3:30 everyday to leave house at 4:10 yo work. But today I woke up at 2:30 to turn on the amp and have a listening sesh before I go to work lol
I’m not 100% sure, but I think that is a Raytheon tube. Raytheon used mostly orange lettering and the logo on the tube looks like Raytheon’s.
The tube in the photo actually looks like an RCA Clear Top 12AU7. After zooming in, the lettering appears to be faded red and not orange like I originally thought.
Mullard cv4003, Telefunken 12au7 smooth plate, 1956 ge 12au7, rca clear top 12au7, Japanese cei 12au7.
The Mullard is labelled with cv4003. The Telefunken has a nice Telefunken label on it. The CEI tube has a big yellow CEI label and also says Japan on it. That should narrow it down a bit for you. If you want to PM me photos of the other 2 I’ll be able to tell you which is the RCA and which is the GE (or maybe Hazi can spot it from this photo).
These are the power tubes you have:
Mullard cv2984 (2 of these but they’re the same tube), RCA 6080.
The RCA was the stock tube. Once I put the Mullard in there I didn’t roll it.
