Schiit DAC/Source thread, Bifrost / Gungnir / Yggdrasil / Urd

You might have just saved me $300! I’m currently using the OG BF2 with my Quicksilver and don’t have any complaints. Your slight preference for the OG with your Quicksilver has solidified my decision to hold off on the upgrade, well for the time being at least.

Nice to see the consistency with all these evaluations. Good ears people here, lol. I’m filing for future reference.

This is the first time (unless I grossly missed something) where there was mention of the standard (OS) mode also presenting different characteristics as a result of the firmware update to the OG BF2, and not just the addition of the NOS mode being made available.

This is what I’ve been looking for and was my concern - That if you upgrade firmware even without upgrading the card - you will change the OG BF2, and to date I have not seen a way to revert back to the OG firmware. Also, firmware appears to be separate from the card so even if you put in the old card you still have the new firmware, if I’m understanding it correct.

Only probably concerning to me and my preferences I’m sure - I for one am a fan of the 'thick bass" and overall sound from the OG (hardware and apparently firmware too), and don’t want to loose it. The Yggy A2/Unison (OG) I have is technically superior than the BF2 and sounds great but, in its own right. However, it does not have that BF2 sound… And, a lot of the time for me - I say damn the technicalities for this session, I just want to kick back and jam to some tunes; Fun, thick-n-boomy et al :yum:

Very glad to hear these impressions from u and Hazi in particular. The Bifrost 2 was awesome but after trying other dacs it seemed a bit too smudgy for me, so glad to hear that there’s more air in the treble detail, generally sharper instead of boomy! Seems like a good improvement

Schiit: Older Firmware Versions:
Old firmware versions are not provided, because Bifrost 2 and 2/64 do not allow the installation of older firmware. Please use the latest firmware version, linked above.

Once you jump, its over.

@M.J Very important. Thanks for this. If I understand it properly that means once you have used the new SD card to upgrade, you can’t Fully to back to the
OG BF2’s true original sound…? So not really Og Og? And how does that affect the perceived differences when switching back and forth? You can tell I’m not an electronics guy, lol. Just curious.

It’s a small change that I think I hear. And it is less a change than a slight tweak. Still rich and warm but with just a little bit more purpose. A little bit more space to breath on top. It still sounds BF2 to me. I shared your worry about that. But instead what I am getting with the OS is just a little bit better at being a BF2 if you like? It still slams, definitely still makes me go “MmmmmMMm” when I want that. Thick, warm and big. Just with a bit less claustrophobia. I am struggling to say what I think I hear with words. It’s like it is less hairy and more furry. Smooth but with texture. Not technical. The NOS feels more technical. Just really really nice. Like above the thick sea of bass there are sparkles of stars, moonlight. There are fewer clouds above but nothing taken away from the waters. It’s really nice in my opinion. I’ve gone from feeling like I had something missing to feeling like between the two options the BF2 can give me everything I want from my dac. It sounds like music.

Edit to add that I want to reiterate that if I am hearing something different it is a small thing that I’m picking up because I am listening very analytically. When I just listen to music it’s still the same BF2. Obviously all extremely hard for me to confirm without having two BF2s to A/B too

@Gothique Wave Theory has upgraded his and said he’s getting a loaner OG and will do some A/B testing.

Good to know. I’ve made a point of not reading or watching any opinions outside of this thread before posting as I wanted to see how close what I think I hear is to what emerges as the consensus opinion  I can safely go do so now!

I think that is a wise choice. The reason im keeping the 2/64 card in the BF2 is that it has better synergy with my Bottlehead Crack Speedball than the OG card.

Eventually I plan to buy a separate dac to pair with the QS, but for now the 2/64 will do. It still has good synergy with the QS, but I do personally believe that the OG Card has slightly better synergy with the QS. The QS being a very clean and non syrupy tube amp, it benefits from the slower decay and thicker aound of the OG Card.

Your experiences closely mirror some of mine. Having affirmation is nice…it means I’m not crazy and imagining things and my hearing hasn’t gone to shit just yet.

Do you think in theory with these changes the 2/64 is a better synergy with the G111 than before? Same for the Rnhp?

I think the RNHP would most likely be a better pairing with the OG Card, and the G111 with the 2/64. Without having heard those specific cards paired with those amps (but I have previously owned both amps and paired with the OG BF2 card), this is purely speculation on my part.

I am liking upgraded OG a lot on the RNHP.

I appreciate your additional thoughts and feedback, thank you!

Yeah, i like bombastic, but sometimes it was too much. A little too loose and bold even for a fun listen.

My BF2 has been suffering in the heat we’ve had the last week. Ended up having to turn it off when the chassis was getting almost too hot to touch. Gonna need a low heat summer stack at this rate O.o

Wow, that’s unusual. The BF2 wasn’t one to get too warm to begin with! Too hot to touch is scary. It may not be pretty but if you put it on it’s side with the transformer end up it will help to dissipate the heat. Also, no staking on top of other devices helps a lot.

I know, but it has been stupid warm here. Saturday high was 38 Celsius indoors and it was still 29 Celsius at 11pm. It was fine for a day or two but with that going on things without active cooling just don’t cool off enough and the heat builds up.

It wasn’t the only thing either. The little Soncoz dac got worryingly warm too, the Geshelli E2 was ok but I am convinced the sound got a little darker as it heated up.

At present I just have the RNHP on it. I’m going to get a bunch of rubber speaker resonance dampener feet as separators. I used some to lift my Audio_GD up and it significantly improved with airflow underneath. I think the BF2 will similarly benefit. For now I have just turned off anything that has me concerned.

If I had money to invest, I’d invest in air conditioning installation and support companies in the EU. The next decade is going to so critical.
