Schiit DAC/Source thread, Bifrost / Gungnir / Yggdrasil / Urd

Mojo Mystique V3 and/or La Voce S3 were the ones I was looking at for the Pass… or you could just get another BF2…

Yeah the la voce looks interesting for sure, also not interested in another bifrost since I’m not looking for a side grade and the bifrost and my dac aren’t different enough in sound signature either to want to own both.
Its just a shame that the yggy dosent sound best SE because it really really interests me, and both my amps are SE too

Same. Maybe i look at an Ares 2 for the RNHP chain, but then i need to look at the loss of unison usb and worrying if it works well with the hd800s.

They also tend to be a bit more scarce and expensive used.

Supposedly the Yggy LIM doesn’t suffer from the same discrepancy between its single-ended and balanced outputs. It’s similar to the Bifrost 2 in that way. I have been considering the LIM as an upgrade to my BF2, which I really like. I also have only SE tube amps, so the LIM seems like the right choice.

I wonder how that works, it uses the same output cards and it’s fully balanced as well, I don’t see why there wouldn’t be the same quality drop off

Perhaps it actually doesn’t:
OG: Analog Stage: Fully discrete, DC coupled Class A FET buffers optimized for high current output and fully discrete, Class A FET summing stages for single-ended output

LIM: Analog Stage: Integrated, using LME49724 differential stage

Very interesting it’s an op amp stage now rather than discrete, not summing anymore either I’d assume, using the exact same output stage as the bf2 (although that slightly worries me from a fidelity perspective lol)

From everything I’ve read, LIM owners have noticed very little drop off, if any, when using the SE outputs. It’s the main reason I’ve been considering it to use with my Quicksilver Headphone Amp. I don’t plan on getting a balanced amp unless I’m able to find a way to get my hands on an ECP DSHA3F.

I feel like this is game changing news that @ckhirnigs is sharing :eyes:

Those ecp amps are also something ive been looking at and trying to find info for. I know there are two versions and the F is more for low Z Focals, but i think the other version would fit me better with senns and zmf.

It looks like from what i see on SBAF there is someone working with the ECP guy to make more amps but i dont know how long that will be.

If anyone on here ends up grabbing a LIM I would be very curious on your guys thoughts, esp if you can test the bal vs se

Yeah, I’ve been watching that SBAF thread as well. I haven’t seen any updates on when production is going to start. I don’t even know if it’s officially going to happen yet. I was intrigued by the talk that it might be cheaper than the original 3F.

The 3F was indeed designed for low-Z Focals, but it is supposedly a great match with ZMF’s. There are quite a few Auteur owners who rave about the synergy with the 3F. The other model is the T4, which is a tube hybrid amp.

Now back to the Schiit DACs…

Earlier this morning I finally was able to get time to swap the Yggdrasil into the chain I had the Spring 3 KTE in - I’ve about 3 hrs in to a playlist made up of streamed and local content all done via roon.

The Yggy is in the same family as BF2 there is no mistaking that, but I think BF2 might slam a bit harder but, the Yggy is certainly more clear, resolving and open. I think the Spring still edges the Yggdrasil out in resolution and timbre, but again I just switched and this is my primary setup so the Springs grip on me is strong and the brain will need to adjust.

One thing standing out to me - and I am not calling good or bad is that the stage does not appear to be as grand as the spring - but I think it helps with synergy with the OOR, there is to me a better sense of dimension I can hear the boundaries of the room, reflections are more obvious - with the Spring everything is so vast and with the OOR not excelling in depth sound is more spread out left to right, diluted - with the Yggy positioning seems more believable with the OOR which I think is adding density, weight and edge- at least giving me the perception of such.

I need a lot more time with this configuration - I do like what I am hearing but def need more time to sort it out and also run through different scenarios.

I know its way way too early for this - I’ll need check back in a month when I switch back to the Spring - but right now I am kind of bummed I did not order a new Yggy OG and get the black color way… So it would match better aesthetically with the Oor/Hypsos …

@krack sorta summed it up already - “Yggy is American Junk food” not the most detailed, not the best at technicals, but I’ll be damned if it is not full of fatty goodness and fun.

I feel a bit dirty using this source for the Susvara but I really am diggin it, and just don’t care…
roon → Yggdrasil “OG” → Orr/Hypsos → Susvara

Don’t even ask about the D8000 Pro or TH610 Lawton, I haven’t even tried them

I like the black units better, but if it makes you feel better they still have grey and the same silver buttons. I will say the silver looks better than expected on my bf2.

Modius to Bifrost2:

Just received my BF2 an hour ago and the moment I plugged it in, alot of noise just disappeared its like the signal took a shower.

Everything is breathing now the stage opened and shaped up, there is clearly more space between things, images and things are clearer for each ear to grab, loving the constant movement between left and right, I notice height now too.

Bass cleaned up and less boomy less muddy, constant slams, drivers are working out.
What used to be sibilant and harsh is gone like really gone wtf this much smoother?? It wants you to listen to harsh stuff, so easy.

Things sound less “digital” and sound more correct… Instruments sound so natural, vocals are sweeter and real and more separated from the instruments, on the Modius they were mashed in the mix.

I’m hearing new low level information that I didn’t notice before at low volumes.
It feels faster things don’t linger longer than they should.

There are Dynamics now and noticing them is a good feeling… Things sound loud and low at the same time not like before everything is a loud mess.
Its amazing how small incremental corrections to the signal adds to the whole experience.

One last note, the official pictures don’t do the black coating justice, I thought it’s the rubbery kind of coating that flakes, Its my favorite now from Schiit equipment going from silver.

Ok I’ll stop now, just so happy with this purchase and looking forward to the piece by piece future upgrades. Can’t imagine what you guys are experiencing in the kilo buck world lol but getting there in time.

@M.J Damn…I’ve been avoiding this thread, but made the “I’ll just take a look” mistake!
Been yearning for a Bifrost to put with my Asgard 3, but $ makes for a tough decision between BF or Headphone upgrade. So now I see yet ANOTHER glowing review, LOL.
A bit of overkill for the Asgard, I know, but I LOVE detail, separation and soundstage as
much of my listening is orchestral, female vocals, jazz groups, as well as well-written pop. HMMM.
