Thank you fir the distinctions here. I’ve always wondered how dynamic range can be measured when parts of the song are silent (ie approx zero db)
Actually that would be the loudest or highest intensity in a digital signal, basically no sound would be -96db ish for a 16 bit file, but realistically -60db is silence
Veterans: what are some of your favorite futures of roon? New user here
listening to music!
I started using Roon to enable streaming to network attached endpoints. This is still one of the most important features to me, eliminating the need for DACs attached via USB to my laptop. Raspberry Pi, Chromecast, and any other device that supports RAAT are really easy to use.
Music discovery is what kept me from leaving. I find more new music to listen to when I’m using Roon than with other platform interfaces.
Remote control from phone, laptop, tablet, whatever is really convenient. I smile every time i have to reboot my computer and the music just keeps on playing because the Roon Core is doing all of the work.
Integration of local content, with Tidal and Qobuz makes it very easy to control my entire HiFi world.
Newest use is integration of HQPlayer. Not make-or-break, but fun to experiment with, and easy to use.
Just recently discovered the ability to use DSP to time delay my speakers gently to make up for small and large variation in placement. Since I am in the middle of remodeling my main listening area I am currently forced to sit a small bit off center and unable to get my head within just a few inches of the exact sweet spot and still have my comfortable corner seat. Thus I tinkered with the settings and used trial and error to time delay my speakers just enough to move my sweet spot over a few inches while leaving the speakers centered (because OCD) which was just enough to hold me over till I can finish the remodel and put the new seating exactly where it belongs.
It works really really well and if it wasn’t for the blatant visual offset which annoys me I could possibly live with it if based solely on SQ.
Most of the value for me it organizational
I like the way it presents classical recordings it recognizes by movement as well as just track
I like being able to pick the default version of an album across streaming and local versions
I like the way it sticks all the SRV material under the SRV artist in addition to the original band names
And although I consider it minimum bar
I like being able to control from different devices depending where I am
And I like being able to stream to multiple endpoints
I don’t really use playlists, and I disable Roon Radio, though I have been using the daily mixes to identify new material, or older material, I’d overlooked more recently.
Also another great feature is that it allows me to pre-set settings for different DAC’s in different rooms and locations amd name them so I know what they are. Thus when I swap between DAC’s I don’t have to change the settings every time only when I physically relocate a DAC. I understand this would be of limited use to someone that only has one main listening area but when you have a bunch of equipment all over the place and use multiple listening areas it’s great. Heck, I’m falling in love with ROON all over again amd reminding myself why I spend the extra money every month
yes, DAC specific settings are integrated so cleanly I forget that they are even there. Everything just plays correctly.
Anybody used the export feature in roon?
Does it basically make an exact copy of the file but with updated metadata?
Would be pretty cool if it did. Might have to check it out with a trial if so.
Export has been hit or miss for me as while it will update meta data to an extent it avoids stuff like changing files names even when I finds the right song which means my physical files stay pretty messed up tbh
Oh that sucks. That’s good to know, thanks
Oh btw, new update for Roon today which brings native roon control for your phone, updated versions menu, and updated export menu to include export to soundiiz.
Do you mean you can use your phone as a core? Not sure what exactly yoy mean here tbh
My bad for not providing much detail. Here’s what it says on the email…
You can now access essential controls natively from your Android or iOS device without going into the Roon Remote app. Now playing information, volume, and pause and skip controls can all be controlled from your phone.
Now just waiting patiently for bit-perfect playback through Android phones. Maybe Roon needs a licensing agreement with UAPP? It would be a killer feature to use any Android phone as a Roon endpoint for bit-perfect streaming.
I feelnlike i had all of those before tbh…
It said it was a widely requested feature apparently.
Skip and volume never used to work on android from a head set previously, because I know it annoyed me a couple of times.
Hello,
My first Roon experience went wrong.
Supposedly, even though you have everything at home, you need a streamer to use it with Roon.
Pc,Dac,Router would be available.
I have seen that there are streamers that have a dac.
That makes no sense for me if I already have one.
A streamer without a dac would also be cheaper.
But I have no idea what to choose.
Has anyone had any experience with these devices?
And does it make sense at all?
Apart from that, I have another question.
I still have 2 usb ports free on the router, couldn’t I just connect the dac or something like Singxer Su 2 to it and not need a streamer in the end?
In principle it would be the same except that it would be a fixed station from which it is controlled.
I’m not nerdy enough for that.
Just getting Roon to test that was unsuccessful was a waste of time.
The Roon language is also not easy to understand for beginners.
Roon core you could say that you need a pc would be easier to understand.
And especially that a streamer is needed would not have been wrong.
