Not every recording keeps giving back more when you put it on better gear. In your experience, what albums or tracks scale exceptionally well? What albums or tracks fail exceptionally hard?
A scaler that keeps surprising me every time I feed it an upgrade: Black Keys, Delta Kream.
I’m a black keys fan anyway, and I’ve enjoyed this album from day one. Even on my schitty car stereo it is fun to listen to. But it’s an entirety different album on more resolving systems: air, spacing, separation, subtle vocal effects, little background details. This album keeps begging me for better headphones and better source chain, and how can you not feed a monster that sounds this good?
one that fails is this album I have to go out of my way to use some of my less detailed gear to listen to Neon bible by Arcade fire.
on the flip side even though its not that much better Touch up or any of Mother Mother’s early work holds up surprisingly well their newer stuff tends to have more of a budget so recording quality is les sof an issue
I’ve not listened to arcade fire in years. Now I’m really curious…
Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Reasons To Be Cheerful Pt. 3 [Bonus Track] on the Do It Yourself (2004 Edsel 2-CD Release)
Besides it being a fun party song when everyone is already loose, it’s a surprisingly good recording.
I thought I’d throw down Earth Wind and Fire’s Greatest Hits. The better my gear, the better it sounds!
