Okay, so more teasing around. The Radu, AKA “The Beast” is not the first 300B amp I have listened to at home or in extensive listening. Have heard the Studio B, the Elekit with custom upgrades and used the speaker taps given the gimped headphone output.
300B amps have been typically a no go for my Utopia, however always took care of planar cans in the same manner I enjoy the Utopia with DNA amps.
So while this was not my first 300B experience, The Beast and I gelled with right off the bat, not too dry, not too wet, just right. For a few days I used my own planar headphones, the RAD-0 which have an either love or hate enjoyment from folks who have tried them.
Further Context on RAD-0
To me they are on the level of the LCD-4, which ironically is the only planar I enjoyed off the Stratus, likely due to their 200 ohm impedance and 97 dB/mW allowing for the lower current required to drive them. *
**For context the RAD-0 is 29 ohm/98 dB/mW, which at the same volume requires nearly double the current of the LCD-4.*
With the Radu Shiney Eyes, the Rad-0 took on a different behavior, one that even my best solid state amp could not create. It felt fast, authoritative, and most importantly it had some air on the top end. On some solid state amps, the top end air was present at the sacrifice of losing authority in the mid range and bottom end. This was not an issue off the 300B Radu.
Once I heard this amp was specifically made for the Abyss 1266, I immediately called a buddy who had a pair and did not mind sending them to me for a few weeks. After I fiddled with them over a few days to get acquainted with the ergonomics and their odd placement over the ears, I was digging them for a good chunk of my listening. I did have to skip tracks more often and this was do their inability to handle more highly compressed modern infamously jacked from the loudness wars. It took a few weeks, and a visit from Cousin Nick to change one setting in Roon to fix those tracks, he enabled headroom on the backend
I had some friends visiting for CAF and asked them to bring their favorite planar headphones to use off The Beast, they tried the Caldera, LCD-24, Abyss 1266 (well they were already with me) and the Arya Organic ( I think it is called that, it is the newer one with wood inlays) They all seemed impressed by the amp with their respective cans. So there was a lot of ogling over this beautifully crafted amp with the subtle details and heavy iron dominating the top.
I added some Herbie tube dampers to the 300B tubes, need to get a set for the C3G tubes as they are very microphonic, and been temporarily using some nitrile o-rings to help. I changed out what looked like Herbie Tenderfoot to the original feet, they were a bit too soft for this weight and caused some movement as a result, slid the iso-pucks under the chassis so they were directly coupled to the amp instead of the footers.
I would really like to bring in a Susvara to try with it, while a great technical headphone I never enjoyed it for long periods of time and could easily blame not having the best amps on hand to drive them properly.
While I love my DNA/Utopia combo, and she will always be my first love, the Radu slides right in as a perfect compliment in the overall setup to use with the RAD-0. Maybe I will pick up an Abyss 1266 in the near future, maybe another planar. Regardless of planar in house, this is a keeper for the contrast it provides; not polite, yet gentle; hard hitting, yet not overbearing; and most of all brings a big
eating grin on my face
