Radu Tarta Thread, Shiny Eyes / Simple Pleasure / Custom Builds

I am very happy we got this amp into your hands, and at a price that will go down in “lucked out” history books. I wish I kept it but even with my rearranged space it would be too big and heavy, but speaking to you for months prior i really that shiney eyes is THE Nickmimi amp.

It really is an amazing amp. It does everything Nick says but it’s real party trick is that it does all that so effortlessly. No sweat broken, no finger lifted, it just plays. And it gives some heft with solid slamming bass on some hard to drive planars. And it doesnt sacrifice the treble or air

I think the EC has a little more detail and a hairs edge on technicalities, but i still envy the premium parts and Radu grade build. And i hope to one day hear it with speakers.

@NickMimi just remember, I did call dibs and first right of denial if you ever loose your senses and decide to move this one.

Dragged this beast into my office, the rack is up fairly high and @60lbs. this thing is heavy, so it’s not moving again for a long while…
The EML mesh plate 300B are an excellent mating, I have a few hours on this combo and simply have nothing but pure enjoyment.
If I did not know better I would think Radu designed this amp w/ the old Audeze HP’s in mind, the grip and authority w/ which it controls them is an emotionally charging experience. I don’t often turn the volume up particularly loud on my HP’s but I made exceptions today w/ multiple songs and had to deal with my ears ringing several times over the past few hours. :face_with_head_bandage:

I look forward to swapping out different pieces around this amplifier and simply enjoying it w/ HP’s for a while, it’s more of a “visceral experience” listening with this amp than anything else I own.

That is what you say everytime you move it, and that was at least 3 moves ago.

Actually the original owner said it was designed for his Abyss 1266tc, which also makes sense. Both that and the prefazor audeze benefit from what the Radu offers. Just a joy for vocals as it is the clearest most resolute amp ive heard in that category. And that is from someone who commonly “mishears” lyrics.

 :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: YOU SIR are so very correct, it seems I have developed some OCD in my listening preferences and specifically WHERE and how I like to use my equipment. I seem to have spoiled myself.

Even though it may never seem like it based on my seemingly random actions, I am slowly getting intimately familiar with most (not all yet), but most of my equipment.

I wish I could retire from work and spend my days playing with hobbies, having a fat check come in so I can purchase stuff and being pampered like the big old man-child, I am in my soul, but that is not to be😤

It takes sooo much time to put a piece through its paces and really get intimate with its quirks, strengths and weaknesses IMO and even when I THINK I know a piece well, especially tube gear, I often find myself being further educated and enlightened in a good or bad way long after I thought I knew the piece based on a new experience :flushed:

Currently, unless something very drastic happens or I focus on some new “flavor of the month” I think the Radu Tarta, Shiny Eyes, “End-game, DHT Headphone amplifier” will get paired with some favorite pieces and eventually find a “long term home” (that’s relative for me) on one of 2 HP racks that can possibly accommodate it. I still need to try it with a variety of more DAC’s and HP’s. It has some really great features and sound characteristics that I want to really get to know. :hugs:

@Souldriver , I know I owe you on this one, please feel free to reach out anytime to me if ever you need a favor, you did me a super solid with this amp! :+1:

Okay, so more teasing around. The Radu, AKA “The Beast” is not the first 300B amp I have listened to at home or in extensive listening. Have heard the Studio B, the Elekit with custom upgrades and used the speaker taps given the gimped headphone output.

300B amps have been typically a no go for my Utopia, however always took care of planar cans in the same manner I enjoy the Utopia with DNA amps.

So while this was not my first 300B experience, The Beast and I gelled with right off the bat, not too dry, not too wet, just right. For a few days I used my own planar headphones, the RAD-0 which have an either love or hate enjoyment from folks who have tried them.

Further Context on RAD-0

To me they are on the level of the LCD-4, which ironically is the only planar I enjoyed off the Stratus, likely due to their 200 ohm impedance and 97 dB/mW allowing for the lower current required to drive them. *
**For context the RAD-0 is 29 ohm/98 dB/mW, which at the same volu
me requires nearly double the current of the LCD-4.*

With the Radu Shiney Eyes, the Rad-0 took on a different behavior, one that even my best solid state amp could not create. It felt fast, authoritative, and most importantly it had some air on the top end. On some solid state amps, the top end air was present at the sacrifice of losing authority in the mid range and bottom end. This was not an issue off the 300B Radu.

Once I heard this amp was specifically made for the Abyss 1266, I immediately called a buddy who had a pair and did not mind sending them to me for a few weeks. After I fiddled with them over a few days to get acquainted with the ergonomics and their odd placement over the ears, I was digging them for a good chunk of my listening. I did have to skip tracks more often and this was do their inability to handle more highly compressed modern infamously jacked from the loudness wars. It took a few weeks, and a visit from Cousin Nick to change one setting in Roon to fix those tracks, he enabled headroom on the backend :man_facepalming:t4:

I had some friends visiting for CAF and asked them to bring their favorite planar headphones to use off The Beast, they tried the Caldera, LCD-24, Abyss 1266 (well they were already with me) and the Arya Organic ( I think it is called that, it is the newer one with wood inlays) They all seemed impressed by the amp with their respective cans. So there was a lot of ogling over this beautifully crafted amp with the subtle details and heavy iron dominating the top.

I added some Herbie tube dampers to the 300B tubes, need to get a set for the C3G tubes as they are very microphonic, and been temporarily using some nitrile o-rings to help. I changed out what looked like Herbie Tenderfoot to the original feet, they were a bit too soft for this weight and caused some movement as a result, slid the iso-pucks under the chassis so they were directly coupled to the amp instead of the footers.

I would really like to bring in a Susvara to try with it, while a great technical headphone I never enjoyed it for long periods of time and could easily blame not having the best amps on hand to drive them properly.

While I love my DNA/Utopia combo, and she will always be my first love, the Radu slides right in as a perfect compliment in the overall setup to use with the RAD-0. Maybe I will pick up an Abyss 1266 in the near future, maybe another planar. Regardless of planar in house, this is a keeper for the contrast it provides; not polite, yet gentle; hard hitting, yet not overbearing; and most of all brings a big :poop: eating grin on my face

Try one of the other pairs. The paperwork should note which ones are good matches for pairs. Those tubes by their nature shouldnt catch much noise. Also on tube talk those 300Bs work well on that amp but i did not like them one bit on a Studio B. The mullard recti keeps it all tight and the bass solid like a brick. Nick should of charged extra for that one.

I forgot i had this one on hand too when I had the amp. Bass was just so good and textured. Hard hitting to boot.

I would be interested in this pairing. I wonder if it could drive it well, maybe off the speaker taps too? It may be more relaxed than most like seeing many keep trying for gear that livens the Sus up. Never tried a Sus though so tons of salt there.

If you can find a deal, or if “Cousin Nick” visits again try the Audeze PFs. Nick prefers the 3, i favor the 2.

I agree here, a very authoritative amp but also laid back and gentle. It is funny how we all hear the same amp but different aspects stick out. For me it was the ease of flow like the amp wasnt even trying, the endless spacial creation, textured but thumping bass, and the mids. Oh if I could just take those mids with me everywhere i would be a happy man. Amazing timbre and they were so clear with vocals.

Looks like it is your time to tag others.

Nah, get a yammy instead

Without getting into details, there is only one other usable matched set from the stash. I need to get the others re-traced and find out what tolerances are like for matching. It is more of a ringing noise that can happen from changing the volume or an accidental tap on the rack with an arm.

This is the key, am a bit torn on getting a pair of efficient speakers and feel the money for a 1266 would be better spent towards speakers. Then again, the 1266 are sort of mini floating speakers. I will have to try the LCD-2/3 as he Cousin Nick has them all, I did own the PF 2.2 and enjoyed them too for what they did.

Honestly, these are some of the aspects I was trying to relay and held back as I wasn’t sure if it would come across as fluff with how I would describe it.

1-2 may be on here, will let them come on their own when ready to share.

I would love to get one in for a bit, should preface I was not planning on buying a Susvara but hoping to borrow one as I borrowed the 1266. That way I can cross it off the list and either put it in the maybe bucket, or the hell no trash can once again  (The Sus, not the Yammy)

100% the c3gs? You did the tap the tube test and it was them and not the 300Bs? Hmm trying to think what else could cause it but the sockets and pins should be all clean and tight. I know someone else here had that TFK c3g bounty but I am not sure if they will be willing to share their source. Telefunkens and Siemens are traditionally extremely similar sound wise.

Make that 3, i am tempted to drive to you right now as your impressions are bringing back good memories.

I am happy the amp is in a good spot. I only hope it stays in the community as time passes on.

@Souldriver For the record please, I genuinely had NO intention of actually selling the amplifier, my need to acquire a used vehicle for reliable transportation though was greater than my current desire of electronics and thus when i realized just how much joy the Radu brought to @Camus the decision was easier for me to make. I’m tired of having to rent a vehicle every time i need to go beyond a 50 mile radius from my home :triumph:. (I will eventually stumble across a used vehicle that fits my needs for a price i am comfortable w/ and i now have enough cash back in hand to be serious about making an offer) :crossed_fingers:
The amplifier has a SAFE home in the community and i explained that should the desire for the amp to yet again get a new home arise, @Souldriver has first dibs, especially if ever you manage to finally expand your listening room so that you can finally “stretch your legs” and set up your desired equipment appropriately :hugs:

Yup, it’s not obnoxious or anything, and once I put on tube dampers on the 300B it definitely helped those tubes. The only reason I haven’t bought the size for the C3G yet is due to Herbies being sold out on the size I need for 2A3/300B balloon type rings. I robbed the Stratus to use the rings on the Radu :joy:

 you would have found my guard dog sleeping on duty. Happy to know my little snippets brought back good memories. It’s definitely one of those amps one needs to hear to fully understand why it’s so intoxicating, and I say this as the owner of several high quality headphone amps!

Thank you for this @Souldriver, means a lot :people_hugging:

The Radu is staying put here in the community, @NickMimi made it crystal clear that he would hunt me down if he found out it moved more than 100 feet from my home :joy:
Pretty sure there is a tracking device inside as the one time I managed to move it off the rack I heard a subtle beeping noise

No need to explain or apologize, and know I am only pulling your chain. I would love to have it back one day but as you mentioned i have no clue where i would put it. Not to mention how the hell itll get back up here, plus i would need to send it to Radu to swap to a balanced out. It is better kept with someone like Camus who is using and enjoying it.

They have been out for a long while tbh, at least since spring when i looked.

Dont do that often unless you own a crane.

Just to stir the pot:

Would recommend trying these tube dampers.

Thanks, their large size do not seem to fit the ballon shaped 2A3/300B tubes as they are 2.5” at their widest point.

@Camus @hifiDJ Probably just my imagination, but are your avatars of the same cylindrical object from different perspectives…

I haven’t personally used the Mapleshade was interested. I have the Herbie resonance ring around my old metal GZ34 but alas they still rattle…
