The Radu Tarta Shiny Eyes-end game DHT amp requires a warm up. Yep, gotta have it, w/ HPās on there is an unpleasant harshness otherwise that grates on my nerves. (15-20 minutes seems to do the job) This unpleasantness is centered in the upper midrange frequencies and irks me similar to fingernails scraping across a chalkboard, (for anyone old enough to have ever experienced an asshole purposely doing that to irritate people back in school.)
Next, my REL subwoofers and their connection direct to the speaker taps continue to be an irksome issue, they need to have the ground lifted as directed in the instructions, to be connected to a balanced amplifier, otherwise an ugly ground loop noise occurs on the HP output of the amp. On a good note this can be rectified depending on the connection procedures used. This is user error but should be noted because otherwise an uniformed/uneducated user may spend several hours pulling pieces, disconnecting cables, swapping components, kicking the dog, cursing and generally being in a most foul mood trying to figure out WTF is going onš¤¬
Time spent diagnosing and figuring out the quirks and eccentricityās of a new tube based piece of equipment is important for the end user, pieces this large and delicate come w/ a stupid fee and it can be very expensive if you mess up.
I used Audeze LCD 2.1 HPās last night and early this AM. @Souldriver per your request. It took me a while to settle on music to do this with and finally i went with a band called The Dead South (Folk-Bluegrass, country, strings). Also, due to the above mentioned issues figuring out proper connections/ integration w/ this amp and my equipment, my front end wound up being: PhoenixNet ethernet switch/clock > SoTM LPS > SOTM streamer > SOTM USB regen > Baltic 3 DAC > SPL Phonitor X pre-amp > Shiny Eyes > Audeze LCD 2.1 pfās. All connected via simple Mogami gold XLRās and using Wireworld silver electra and electra 7 power cords. (For what itās worth) (Acme 300Bās in amp, EML 274B mesh plate, NOS 1958 MELTZ 6sn7, and 1950ās NOS Tungsgram Red label E80CC in DAC)
Vocals and midrange came at me well forward, accentuated and w/ a pleasant richness imbued in them. There is detail though and itās not soft or āgooeyā, there is more detail than I am used to in this HP, is it extended decay i am hearing? I can distinguish each and every pluck of the strings and the raspy nature of the lead singers voice is at the extreme of what i find comfortable but the sibilant āSSSāsā are tamed, just barely, but tamed enough to not be irksome. In live tracks i can hear the background noises of the audience distinctly and w/ detail. Next are the highs, and there is no lack of treble energy. Considering i always found the LCD2.1 ālaid backā it felt extremely energized. The quiet passages were the most beautiful to listen to, the accentuated richness in the midrange combined w/ the extremely black background and great space and separation really make for an experience well worth the full cost of admission. Lastly, the bass has a nice bloom to it that envelopes the overall presentation, it feels like it is hanging in the background like a halo around the overall presentation. Itās a nice sensation, full feeling and filling the space around my head w/ its presence. The punch, when present in the music has grunt and i canāt complain or find fault w/ the low end.
There is a really good sense of space and separation, no noise or hiss and excellent blackness in the background that adds to the level of detail present in the music. Overall this combination of equipment is presenting extremely well. What i am truly excited about is the amount of raw power that seems present in this very large beast of an amplifier. Most of you probably canāt tell due to the pictures and possible lack of scale, but this is the 2nd largest amplifier i own, it dwarves everything but my Monoprice- Monolith 5 channel, 1000watt A/V amp. and it weighs in at a hefty 65lbs.
Very low listening is extremely dynamic and it took me a moment of care to adjust the volume correctly to prevent painful and possibly HP damaging excess in output when combining this amp w/ a pre-amp. I am very excited to try the amp w/ my HE6se, Autuer, HD800s and other HPās. I donāt think I have anything else in the house that is a dedicated HP amp that can power planars w/ this much authority, ease and comfortable control
Now that i properly understand how to integrate the amplifier w/ other equipment safely and correctly i look forward to trying it w/ different DACās, w/ and w/out a pre-amp and even on my desktop if i ever manage to get it up to the second floor (itās heavy and Iām cautious w/ my back). I look forward to taking some notes and writing up an article based on my experiences.
This was the most convoluted (and stressful) deal i have made to date, trying to get this beast in my possession and i donāt plan on wasting the extra effort i put into this, iām gonna put some words to paper and leave them on the internet for posterity. Iām gonna e-mail Radu to verify my suspicions, but i think currently this is the only version of this amplifier he has built to date, i am pretty sure it is only one-of-one. The other version floating around is a physically lighter, less complex design w/ different components which to my good fortune was compared in cost at one point by many and allowed me to get a good deal from Souldriver, (The original owner truly lost his shirt on this by not offering it up on Audiocircle and USAM to a more diverse audience) I made sure to compensate Souldriver well and i think i made the deal well worth his pleasure ( i hope you are enjoying those WE 300Bās and the other goodies brother.)
As i write this up i have moved on to my Audeze LCD 2.2 pfās. Overall, the bass is a bit more delicate, in a good way, on these. A bit less bloom, barely perceptible unless you are doing a side by side i would assumeā¦who knows maybe my ears are tired after 3 hrs of this and there is no difference between the 2 versions, i could be mistaken but i feel like i have felt the same distinction before between the 2 HPās.
Iām gonna enjoy the day and look forward to my new BMR towers arriving sometime later. ugh, Iām gonna have to put together a whole different set-up to play w/ those and figure out where to stash some of these other speakersā¦lolā¦i love my life.
