Just replying to this as to remind people that I did not limit the post by release year. Y’all can add albums that are older than 2022
I’ll stick to albums that I’ve “discovered” this year, in no particular order except #1
This is By far the best digital master of Machine head, it’s the Japanese SACD release, the only one that is vaguely close to the original Vinyl, and very much my favorite discovery in music of 2022.
I’ll just stay within this year’s releases (2022) for my favorite albums. Because it would be too hard to list them otherwise.
LOOK AT ME: THE ALBUM - XXXTENTACION
First and foremost has to be the X album that was released with the documentary, LOOK AT ME. The documentary was very good, but this album is amazing. It finally gives official releases to songs that were absolute bangers, such as #ImSippinTeaInYoHood, NEVER, and King Of The Dead. Definitely going to be listening to this for a long time to come. One of my favorite hip hop/rap albums.
Mmaso - Ecko Bazz
Oh man, where do I start with this one? Incredible African drill rap, but it has such a unique style to it at the same time. The instrumentals are great. Ecko Bazz has such variety in his flow, and hits hard. This album was one of the first that got me into more underground experimental music in general, and I still love it. Give it a try, you might like it.
Oni - Darko US
This is quite possibly the best metal album of 2022. Might not go as hard as Lorna Shore’s Pain Remains, but there is just something special about this one. The vocals are insane, the melodies are awesome, and the energy is nuts. The variety is amazing, you can go from a brutal track like Dragon Chaser that makes you want to break something, to the deeply moving melodies of Infinite Beauty. It is really growing on me and I adore it. This might sound dark but I think that covid actually helped metal go underground again. We saw a ton of bands go back into the studio and get very creative with making new music. A lot of throwback albums to classic 2000s sounds. There are probably 10 different metal albums I would put on this list if I could.
Nekonomicon - Nekonomicon
Apparently this album started as kind of a joke project. The guy was making some “Nintendocore” music (chiptune video game music and metalcore together), and it ended up being unironically good. I gave it a listen and fell in love with it. It is such a fun listen. If you like chiptune and metal there’s a good chance you will like this. I’ll link a video to how it was started because I think it is pretty interesting:
Love Letters From Houston - KAIRO
Okay I know this is technically an EP, but it needs to be in here. I know these guys and met them in person, they are just two brothers making music in their free time during school, very cool chill people. I just love the harmonies they have together with their voices, it’s a pleasant sound that honestly deserves more attention, hoping to get some for them here, haha. Please check them out, you might enjoy it. They do mostly acoustic stuff that is pretty simplistic and just a very positive energy overall.
Well I guess that’s all I can fit in the list, there’s so many more I would show. But there’s a snapshot of my favorite 2022 albums.
It’s not often you’ll run into a band that released one of their most popular albums in 1959 and another of their most popular albums released in 2022. God Damn is right. Great album, great recording.
