New album recommendations

I’m currently in my own music appreciation era. ecploring all genres, many I don’t listen normally listen to after years of listening to mostly the same genres. I’ve been wanting an outlet of sharing newer albums I’ve been very much enjoying. I wanna limit this thread for albums released in the past 3 years from whatever current date. I want to personally share a new album on a regular basis with a little blurb covering my overall impressions.

I would love for others to participate by adding their own entries and encourage everyone to listen to what is being recommended if it seems to appeal to them. My whole goal for the thread is to encourage everyone to leave their comfort zone and try something new.

Please limit each entry to one album each week per participant to actually encourage discussion and give those who who want to discuss and digest the new albums being recommended time to discuss the album. I don’t want this thread being another music your currently enjoying thread where people drop a song they like and leave. I want to really encourage discussion.

I look forward to listening to new albums people have been discovering and enjoying

My first entry will be this fun little album
Me chama de gato que eu sou sua (2023)
By Ana Frango Elétrico

This is a retro Pop, Jazz, funk album with hints of bosa nova Portuguese album by Brazilian artist, Ana Frango Elétrico has a lot to be admired. Consistently fun throughout the album. Starts off big and Dancy with Electric Fish and absolute bop of a track. Chased by a fun more modern poppy track accompanied by a Brazilian rapper by the track De la. Album then slows down with nuvem vermelha a simple very pretty love song backed by strong instruments and a with a oddly modern retro twist in its instrumentation. Overall I think this album offers plenty of variety and has a lot to offer for those who appreciate more retro latin music. Super fun and really opened up the Brazilian indie music scene for me.

My favorite tracks are :
Ensista em mom
Electric fish
Let’s go to before again ( for how quirky it is )

for my entry this week I would like to recommend 3D country (2023) by the band Geese. Geese is a young New York outfit reminiscent of the classic rock band experience who started off practicing and and self recording in one of the band member’s basements in this case, the drummer. Eventually they found themselves opening for bands such as Greta van fleet and Vampire weekend.

This band wears their influences on their sleeves having a very unique sound pulling inspiration form a lot of classic rock most notably the stones or zeppelin mixed with more proggy sounds from the likes of Radiohead , and is often compared with contemporaries like Squid or Black midi with a good touch of dance punk especially with their first album. This album on the other hand leans more into that more classic rock sound with a dash of country and gospel into the mix leading to a loose extremely bombastic sound carried by the vocalist’s incredible range and his lack of fear for sounding unpalatable.

This post apocalyptic album Starts with the unapologetically loud slightly noisy “2122”. An incredible way to introduce to the listener what they have in store for the rest of the album. The rest of the band is also really showing off their incredible talent keeping up with the high energy of Winter’s vocals. this track also serves to introduce the older listener’s the band’s new sound away from the more punk/prog sound that they had in their debut/previous album teasing instruments like banjo and the cowbell. 2122 is then followed by 3D country. A really fun song about a cowboy who fried his brain with psychedelics in the middle of the desert. this song is very well deserving to be the Album’s title track complete with Gospel and a sick guitar solo. lots to love love with this song. Next track is Cowboy nudes a really fun alt country song just an absolute bop. I see myself slows down the momentum a bit while this song is very well written I just think Winter wanted to flex his vocal range. Undoer is this album’s most experimental track a lot of really cool ideas form what I remember reading they just decided to put a bunch of very short songs they were developing together.

To start to close off this writeup as I intend to keep these shorter than a full on review the album continues to be strong while I am a fan of all the tracks I have heard form others that they do feel that the second half seems a bit weaker than the first. I disagree while the energy tends to be lower on the second half the writing continues to be great. This was my most listened to album from late 2023- early 2024. I recommend this to anyone looking for something that sounds new but also seems so familiar. to me this album represents a perfect example of trying to replicate a classic sound while maintaining originality, a concept I feel certain bands and artists who emulate older more established sounds really struggle with but those types of artists seem to find an audience who tend to want exactly that so who am I to judge. I will say though, the age of these band members never fail to upset and amaze me every time I think about it as they already have such a well developed and unique sound at such a young age.

My favorite tracks are:
-3D country
-Mysterious Love
-Gravity Blues

Wanted to say I appreciate thread like this and you writing them up. Been meaning to share something but I haven’t found the right album yet and yo set a high bar which I’d like to try and respect.

Thank you! I’m just happy to share. Go ahead and write and share anything. no matter the album as long as it’s been released in the past 3 years. I think the 3 years thing may be a bit limiting to some depending on how others feel we can extend that. the whole 3 years thing was just to encourage those who don’t really listen to any newer music to give some of these younger artists or newer releases a shot. To start with I’m just recommending stuff I think others who frequent this forum will enjoy overtime I will get deeper into stuff I really enjoy it may get less and less enjoyable or audiophile for some folks. my ultimate goal is to expose others to music they may not know they enjoy yet and expose myself to music others recommend. I also wanted a place to put my thoughts down on new music I’ve been really enjoying. as the original post says a small blurb stating why and what you liked about the albums your sharing will be enough. if you want want to write more than that go for it.

Originally I was going to use Roisin Murphy’s Roisin Machine as the album I was going to share, but the fact that it’s five years old now and your very valid request of three year window. I changed my submission. Anyway, still an honorable mention for Roisin Murphy as she’s one of the artists that’s top of the charts in any metric I use to slice and dice my Roon play history. Whether as group with Moloko, or in her solo career which now sits at twenty years, the music library and remixes are just pure smart, easy to binge and easier still to put on repeat EDM. I had it on very heavy rotation through the first year of Covid.

So now to my actual submission. a couple of good days by Fennec

From what I can tell, Fennec is a one man show, DJ that produces some extremely melodic trip hop, yet with rhythms and melodies that just stay with you and finds a great balance between chill, and making you want to dance.

He’s got a number of EPs since the release of this Album (2023) but no newer “albums” per se.

Faves in this album are: aperol spritz, girl, and the heaviest playcount on the album is, a lil more conversation.

The whole album is a hit play and sit back affair through. The entire library is available in Bandcamp as well and I’ve gotten all of his albums. My favorite album is, free us of this feeling. But it was released in 2020, so doesn’t qualify for the thread.
