Modhouse Tungsten

The cloth you removed was the coarser mesh I was referring to. Sometimes it’s loose and just falls out so it doesn’t matter that you removed it. Looks like Ryan has been removing the other stretchier cloth that comes on the pads from ZMF

Here’s a picture of the cloth that came with my pads. I like it better with the cloth removed

Got it, yeah mine definitively did not had that one. I will compare the sound with and without the cloth i did remove and then decide what to do, thankfully it should be as easy to put back as it was to take it off, it was barely held into place.

And thanks for the Telegram link lots of interesting stuff there! I am now trying the washer mod on the screws to create a gap under the rings.

Hey guys, just thought I’d share my latest findings with you.

So, some guys on the Telegram group made a good argument that trying the Tungsten on speaker amps would be a good idea, and that the OOR is not really good for them, so i gave it a try. At first i actually told them the OOR had plenty of power and all, that no more power was necessary, but i wanted to hear things for myself.

I must say, i think i’ve experienced the Tungsten’s real sound when i plugged it on my speaker taps, and i am just using a freaking old Onkyo home theater receiver!

Seriously, i now see that the OOR is not at all a good choice of amp for these, the Onkyo does a better job in every single aspect. The top end, staging, bass on the Onkyo are all in a VERY different level compared to the OOR.

Maybe this is why i prefered the Tungstens on the Quicksilver even though it barely has enough power to drive them with no headroom, its not because the Quicksilver are a better pairing for these, but because the OOR is just not a good one.

So yeah, i think every Tungsten owner should give speaker taps a try, it is a real game changer and honestly the sound i am getting out of this combo is something which redefined things for me, i can’t picture myself wanting to listen to my other cans anymore, its just crazy!

Same, I have a long wait ahead of me still

You guys are in for a treat, but do make room for a receiver so you can try them on speaker taps if you can, regardless of the amps you have for headphones.

Another update, this one is important for OOR owners.

I was not happy at all about how the Tungstens sounded on the OOR comparing to my speaker amp, then someone in the Telegram group suggested i should try the OOR’s bypass mode, and man i am glad i did!

The difference between the OOR and the receiver is now much smaller, the bass sounds actually nicer on the OOR now, while the top end is still a bit nicer on the receiver with a bit more brightness and a slightly bigger stage.

The thing is, now i have to keep going back and forth in order to be able to tell the difference, but when i was using the OOR without its bypass mode it was night and day, the receiver sounded much nicer in every single aspect.

This is absolutely worth the try for anyone powering difficult to drive cans with the OOR, i need to check how this sounds with the HE6 and 1266 now!

Does any Tungsten owner here have the T60RP Argons as well?

I’m wondering how they sound versus each other.

I have a Tungsten SS incoming, courtesy of @Christof!

He already posted pics, but I’ll probably add some more as well as impressions.

It’ll give my Violectric V590 a good challenge, along with Yggy OG A2 doing the decoding.

I’m really excited to check it out, thanks Chris! :+1:

@Christof did you play around with making your own grilles for the Tungsten? If so, what did you use for the fabric that goes over the sub-grille to keep junk out of the drivers? Seems like may nylon stock material would work but I’m just curious if there’s a more formal choice of material out there.

No I haven’t made my own grills. All the grills that I’ve tried have either come directly from Ryan or Peter at doublehelix cables. The grills from peter didn’t have any mesh at all and I haven’t had problems running it like that.

The grills that I’ve got from Ryan have a very fine mesh glued onto them but I don’t know what the material is.

I asked Ryan. Apparently he uses a variation of organza fabric

Also, there’s some new adapter pieces for the tungsten that I’ve been trying out and really enjoying. They elevate the bass without producing any noticeable roll off. You can pick them up here: Deep Tune Rings For Modhouse Tungsten (Double Sided) (Pair) – 3D Prints Max

The mods around the tungsten really took off it seems. Is that headphone constructed in a way where it is easy to experiment?

The pads are magnetic and there’s space between the driver housing and the pad to put things like adapters / pieces to make an air gap. And the pads still attach well even with a piece in between.

I think it’s more that Ryan has large community really interested in this headphone and they’ve all shared their tweaks with each other making it easy for anyone with a 3d printer to modify the headphones. Ryan has also produced some mods of his own including different grills and venting adapters.

Thanks! I had actually just ordered a set of these just before you mentioned them. I kinda like the idea of having the fabric mesh under the grilles for a little added protection but I’m sure it’s not a big deal without it. I’ll look into the organza fabric. I have a set of grilles modeled and ordered some 2mm birch plywood that I can laser cut backing grilles out of. I’ll be getting some aluminum grilles cut soon to go with and getting them ceracoated. If they fit right, I’ll be setup to do any kind of grille cutout pattern. Should be fun to play around with and I’m happy to sort out custom grilles for anyone interested. This mostly came from the fact that it’s super hard to get Ryan to reply to emails since he seems to be so busy and the grilles are quite simple parts to play around with.
