Japanese Music / 日本 音楽

This thread is meant to be much like the Korean music and Spanish music threads where people can discuss more in depth and share their favorites in a more focused space. Also I would love for this to be a catalyst to introduce people who would otherwise not listen to Japanese music normally, there are so many immensely talented artists in Japan that otherwise don’t get the attention they deserve due to the language barrier or being written off.

I have been meaning to make this topic for a long while now but various circumstances have prevented me from doing so. The main deterrent has been the fact that I’ve been perpetually behind in music for years now, at the worst point I was over 18 months behind in releases. Currently I’m happy to say that I’m only 3 months behind in releases and catching up at quite a pace now, so I should be back up to date in the coming months. This is a problem in several ways for me, one being that I didn’t want to make this thread if I couldn’t dedicate myself and keep up with current music in a timely manner. Another problem being I just don’t feel motivated to write anything if I’m that far behind current music because I could be using that time to catch up instead

I personally plan to use this thread for more long form and short form written impressions on various albums and pieces of music, I have a huge love of discussing music, that in recent years has taken a back seat to gear discussion instead. Once upon a time I used to write album reviews on a different forum, I don’t quite think I want to slip back into that but definitely would like to stretch those muscles a bit again. For other people who want to contribute to this thread don’t feel obligated that you have to write a whole bunch, if you want to just treat this place similar to the “share the music you’re currently into” thread feel free, but I would love to hear what you think as well if you have the time

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since this is the opening post and I will presumably be posting here a bunch in the future I will go ahead and use this space to tell a little bit about myself and my history with Japanese music.

First of all I listen to exclusively Japanese music and have predominantly for the last 17 years or so, since around 2006. Before then I dabbled in other American music as well but if I was to put specifics on when I was introduced, it would of been around '01-'02 time frame. Around that time anime like FLCL introduced me to rock legends The Pillows and video games like Kingdom Hearts did the same for pop icon Utada Hikaru. It wasn’t until '05-'06 that I started to get really into the music due to me being afforded more internet freedom from my parents and the discovery of communities like myspace and live journal which made it easy to discover new music as well as my earliest memories of pirating hard to get Japanese music through file sharing clients like soulseek  Around early '07 I joined my first forum community focusing on the Japanese music scene being one of the first members of that board and eventually I earned a staff member and moderator position there which I held until about 10 years into the forum. I finally made the decision to take a break, unfortunately I never returned and that forum does not exist anymore. At it’s height though I believe it was the biggest and most active Jmusic message board (in the west at least) eclipsing other popular forums from back then.

At first my taste was decidedly shit looking back on it now, I was only really into rock and metal as that is what I mostly focused on in western music. After a few years I started shifting my taste overall and became more open to other kinds of music. I owe a lot of that to my fellow forum members from way back when that were incredibly more diverse than me, I was slowly introduced to many types of artists and now today enjoy a rather varied genre library makeup. I also stopped listening to shitty Visual Kei acts recorded on what sounded like dollar store microphones with more cringe to shake a stick at haha oh boy I really don’t want to remember those days :joy:

On the topic of me only listening to this kind of music, every once in a while I will get recommended something western or listen to local radio but I only really seek out Jmusic. I find most western artists to be very “played out” and unoriginal, an amalgamation of generic trends that get regurgitated endlessly for the sake of the almighty dollar and the corrupt music labels, not to say this doesn’t happen in Japan as well because it does, but not to the same extent as our industry. I also don’t want this to be interpreted as ‘all western music’ sucks or ‘no talent’ because that is not true either, there are very talented artists out here but I just don’t have the time, energy, or willingness to sift through the rest of the garbage to find them LOL Also after two decades of Japanese music I decisively prefer the song and lyrical writing that accompanies a different culture and language.

Okay I will kick us off here with a personal favorite that I have been listening to a lot recently, LiSA. I’ve posted her before in the ‘currently listening to’ thread several times before and with the release of her newest album LANDER I have been obsessing over her again.

I will not be talking about that album today, although It’s damn good and you should check it out if you are already a fan. Instead I want to bring general attention to this woman and if possible earn her some new fans. I’m posting her first take performances here because not only do I adore that channel and the live mostly acoustic performances they do but also feel like these are the best representative videos to introduce the artist LiSA.

These are the videos I would sit someone down who has never listened to a foreign language speaking artist and likely never intends to, and then challenge them to not feel something at the end. The first take is extremely good at breaching this language/culture barrier due to all their videos having English subtitles (turn them on!) for the lyrics but also just presenting the artist as an actual person.

LiSA in particular is a artist that puts everything into her performances and it shows in these videos especially, she has a certain quality about her singing that will mesmerize you. She sings with the utmost precision, everything is literally perfect about her technique from her insane breath control and pitch perfect tone to her ridiculous cadence and switches, it’s quite obvious she is a perfectionist but that same precision doesn’t impart a boring performance like some vocals can when there is no room for “variations” the truth is there are many moments in her singing that constitutes as a ‘bad practice’ from a by the books approach. The difference is she is so refined in her technique that those practices are intentional and work in concert with her insane cadence and breath control and natural voice that it ends up turning conventional vocal teachings on there head. As far as I am concerned she is definitely a world class singer.

This is the newest first take released about a month ago and also the reason I wanted to start writing about her as my first post here. This is what I feel like is a milestone song for LiSA and it really shows in the performance. So haunting and beautiful.

Lastly I discovered (in the last week) that with the release of her new album there is also a LiSA documentary on Netflix available globally in all regions with translated subtitles.

as well as her most recent Budokan Concert from earlier this year also available globally

https://www.netflix.com/title/81620994

The combination of these two pieces of content has taken my enjoyment of this artist to the next level. The documentary goes over her career and everything leading up to it. Its a rare look into one of the most popular Japanese artists of this generation with a level of personal insight you rarely get to see with these artists. Watching the doc first and then going into the live performance is truly a pay off moment. I recommend watching them in that order and make sure you have tissues handy because this shit broke me lol.

I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts on LiSA from these first take performances and especially if you decide to watch the two pieces of netflix content. Both newcomers and old fans welcome

I’m a big big LiSA fan as well. I buy a lot of her BD performances and in all of them you can tell she really has great stage presence. She has an energy and charisma to her that really gets the crowd going, a really great performer. I also love how emotional she usually gets but manages to control it during her performances. I’d imagine it’s not easy doing so when performing live. I also like her cute and sexy appeal during her live performances, it’s impressive how easily she switches between the two.

I think one of her most emotional performances she’s had (or at least what I’ve seen) was during a special tv broadcast studio performance of シルシ. She had to pause for quite a long time to gather her composure and it was just silence that whole time (props to the pianist accommodating her). It really was an impactful performance and, as a bonus, recorded pretty well too. The studio had an open and airy room response so it didn’t sound too dead. I don’t think it’s on YouTube but I haven’t checked since then.

I’ve also really enjoyed her first take performances. Though I wish they’d pay more attention to acoustics and recording quality. Her Homura performance, for example, her voice got clipped and the channel balance favored the left channel. Lol

That documentary was also huge as well. I believe she’s the first major female Japanese artist to have her own documentary, if I’m not mistaken. She also has her own clothing line which I think is pretty cool and interesting. It’s not something I’d buy myself though. Lol

yes her live performances look incredibly fun, I hope to be able to experience her live one day.

I’m not familiar with that one, if you find it please share here, I’m definitely interested in checking it out. Admittedly I haven’t watched too many of her lives, I need to rectify that

Yeah it’s a really good doc and well put together, I feel so much closer to who Risa Oribe is and what she has been through that in turn makes me connect to the performer LiSA all the more now. Her clothing line I believe is ran by her sister Yui, and yeah looks really stylish but I doubt i could pull it off lol

Awesome! glad you enjoyed it, which song was your favorite?

I’ll do you one better. Send me a pm and shared folder (don’t pay for cloud services lol) and I’ll happily share the big file in its Blu ray glory! I haven’t extracted the audio yet so you’ll have to do that yourself if you want audio only (though it’s worth watching as well).

Open to anyone as well…

Edit: Ahhh, here it is on yt but don’t watch it. It’s compressed as heck!

Sweet! yeah Akeboshi is definitely a stand out for her, it’s so different from anything she has performed before.

here is the studio version if you are interested. I really like the acoustic but the studio ver imparts a more powerful sound for sure that is good, also the music video is cool :slightly_smiling_face:

Now that I have finished the anime and it has cemented itself as one of my favorites this year, I got the chance to sit down and listen to the full length album through a few times.

Music based shows have always been a pleasure genre for me leading all the way back to shows like NANA, Beck and K-ON! There are a plethora of shows these days that have some sort of music focus or element, some better than others, but rarely do you find one with such a clear direction in it’s music and the talent to back it up. Shows that create “fictional” bands for the sole purpose of promotion and creating sick music are awesome but also bittersweet as once the project is over so is the band (usually). A few fictional bands that I love that come to mind, Girls Dead Monster (Angel Beats!), BLAST (NANA), Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad and a few others.

It’s funny how up my alley Kessoku band really is, I’m very much a big fan of the female fronted indie rock/pop rock scene in Japan, some of my favorite rock bands from that vein include SHISHAMO, Regal Lily, Chatmonchy, Negoto, Tricot, Necry talkie and many many more. Kessoku Band is right there with these acts in sound and definitely in arrangement and composition, I mean just take a look at these credits…

Quite a impressive list of people working on this, and digging a bit further reveals the drummer and guitarist for the project is ex. School Food Punishment and current la la larks members respectfully. No wonder their instrumentation is so solid

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXRvs_FrwEk&list=OLAK5uy_ki8-zgqvapuz7_ysmO_5mWdRb_YZ9-Ayk

The more I listen to this record the more I love it, It is a very upbeat fun listen with great instrumentation that really gets me pumping. Lots of guitar solos and breakdowns to keep the pace and it is ridiculous how many catchy choruses and killer tracks appear back to back, it is almost too much of a good thing at times. This is something I would definitely listen to even without the context of the show, I could see myself stumbling upon it at random and it would become a instant hit vying for my favorite female rock spot.

That is probably the best praise I could ever give a ‘fictional’ anime band and not many are able to hit that level of quality. I can’t wait for more Bocchi The Rock! and Kessoku Band in the future!

This is stupidly impressive and amazing. I always enjoy his arrangements but this is on another level!

Ordered past the music budget this month but what can I say… As a consequence, I had to pay way too much for shipping since they had to quote it by volume rather than weight. :smiling_face_with_tear:

Anyway…

Tatsuya Kitani: I already had these albums but I didn’t realize the physical version came with a Blu ray so I had to have his live performances. He’s got dope songs and a bad ass voice to boot.

Yuuri: Same story with him, I really dig his latest album. And if you’ve seen him perform live in the first take videos you know this dude has heart and passion in his voice.

SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]: Sawano fanboy here, his latest album just came out. And, of course, got it for the Blu ray too.

Ai Higuchi: Probably my artist of 2022 and with this haul I’ve completed her discography. Ever since I heard her sing the ED for attack on titan I was hooked. Incredible voice kind of like an unpolished gem that sounds both raw and clean. She’s been playing classical piano since her teens and so she performs as both pianist and vocalist. She quickly became one of my top favorites.

I have failed spectacularly at actually posting in here regularly which is the whole reason why I put off making this thread for so long  I’m gonna try to be better lol
I finally fully caught up to my backlog of releases up to the end of 2022. So I’m only behind by 6 weeks in releases from 2023 so far which will get stamped out in the coming weeks.

While I don’t have any recent albums I feel the need to write about right now I’ll instead just highlight some music I’ve recently listened to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECxBHhMc7oI
The Queen in her prime! There is just something about early Shiina Ringo that is so alluring and primal that even after all these years it still has just as much impact as it did back then. Honnou is one of those songs from very early Ringo that I still find myself listening to regularly and for good reason, it still hits.

Humbert Humbert is one of those mainstay duos that I have been following for close to 15 years now, they are a male+female duet that plays a combination of pop folk with acoustic instruments. Just really a very down to earth pleasing act with lots of feel good songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GApQQQi53yI
Takeshi Abo quite possibly one of the most underrated composers in the anime/game industry. Most well known for all of his work on the Steins;Gate and similar visual novel projects from 5pb. His compositions and arrangements are sick, I personally think his Steins;Gate work is peak, but the other stuff isn’t bad either.

Among my favorite singer song-writers, Ichiko Aoba is one of those once in a lifetime performers that bring so much emotion and joy to their craft. Some of the most beautiful pieces of art I’ve heard is a part of this woman’s discography.

I actually have been listening to the live performance of this song “Amuletum” from her “Windswept Adan” live album but this version at the Milton Court Hall in London is actually the better version I think.

I recently rediscovered this artist in my library and was reminded how good she is. Kaneko Ayano is her name and I only have the one EP from 2016, but damn is it a banger. Great production with very interesting song progression and writing. I really like this song “Sayonara Anata” and the slow build up with the really catchy verses and chorus, the story being told in the lyrics and MV is also really fun.

Another one from the same EP as above and probably my favorite track. This is the live version from her Budokan one man in 2021 “Taikutsuna Hibi ni Sayounara o” or “goodbye my boring days”. I’m addicted to this almost psychedelic infused guitar indie rock sound she has going on here, her voice being on the lower more husky side of things really goes well with this style and I can’t help to fall in love with it.

I went and checked and she has a bunch of stuff in her discography since this EP including a new album released last month :astonished: I feel like I’m about to fall down a rabbit hole soon with this artist lol

I like a couple of the newer JP artists like Nonoc, Yoasobi, and Ado. I don’t typically listen to or watch vtubers, but I think Suisei actually has a really good singing voice. I discover Suisei because she hit top of the JP charts in Itunes. My favorite out of the newer JP artists got to be Ado though. There is just something about her voice that always gets to me.

live version:

More Kaneko Ayano, this is from her newest album Towelket wa odayakana (“A towel blanket is peaceful”) which I promise to check out on my next day off . I’m honestly quite smitten with this artist, I can’t believe I’ve not explored more of her music till now and even more shocked that she isn’t more popular and well known. I really enjoy this indie pop/rock sound that veers into noise pop and some shades of shoegaze at times. Her voice is the perfect cherry on top to a excellent instrumental backing band, so beautiful but also has a certain edge and strength to her vocalizations.

Also her music videos are awesome, I love how they are shot and how weird and artsy this one is. Although I prefer the “live” version of this song more, still really cool.

I been telling people that the new Bocchi album is actually one of the better JP albums that have been release in a while. That entire album is legit good from start to finish.
