They look about as thick as the OG Susvara would be without the Grill on the outside to me.
But the angles not ideal to get a really good idea.

Oh and the pads were shallow on those too. I never noticed.

For all the hopes I had for my Caldera to finally be dethroned by this new reference headphone, Hifiman manages to again dissuade my pursuit with their build quality / designā€¦

Their build quality has never really been terrible.
The OG Susvara suffers from poor finish choices and this looks to continue that, I wish the aluminum arms at the bottom of the headband and outer grill had pretty much any other finish than the one they picked, and I hate the veneer on the original.
This one again has the potential to look cool, the brown doesnā€™t bother me, but again with the weird finishes.
They are very comfortable for me, and this one is likely even lighter.
Iā€™m unsold on having removable covers, and how practical that is even for me.
Be interesting to see what the street price is in a couple of months, Hifiman is unlikely to have the same limited production Raal seems to have at the moment, so prices should normalize relatively quickly.

If I were predicting sound, itā€™s likely even more tactile and ethereal that the existing Susvara, certainly not going to be a bass monster.

I really want to hear both these and the Imanis, I do like the Raal sound, but it can be a bit much with in your face detail at times, and I want to see if the Imanis manages to tame that.

I didnā€™t think theyā€™d also be called the susvara lol
They make it seem like the OG will be replaced

According to Google Translate:

SUSVARA UNVEILED

The fully open back design of the flat panel unit completely eliminates the side effects of sound wave reflection, eliminating the last obstacle that impairs sound quality. UNVEILED means unveiling. This technology comes from HIFIMANā€™s technological evolution of the previous generation SUSVARA. Since the nanometer-thick diaphragm is sensitive to reflected sound waves, it is necessary to further increase the openness of the back of the headphone unit. This is the SUSVARA UNVEILED detachable back. Board inspiration.

Looks like you can no longer fix your Susvara with eco friendly wood veneers and screws borrowed from your aunt

Does the new Susvara have a new name? Is it literally named ā€˜Susvara Unveiledā€™?

I believe so.

Sometimes itā€™s a better business decision to NOT release a product than one thatā€™s just a slight modification, missing two panels and has a half-baked marketing nameā€¦

Now that I think about it, they look more and more like a toilet bowl seat to me :joy:

Imagine youā€™re listening to musicā€¦ and suddenly the phone rings.
You reach up to take off the phones, and your fingers (or something youā€™re holding) ream through the guts.

Now itā€™s worth about as much as a toilet seat.
At least my Toto is impervious to whatever I throw at itā€¦

Its the give and take of usability vs performance. The best sounding instruments are the ones that barely have any bracing.

To me the fazors or magnets or whatever structure that is will probably protect it against pokes. And it looks like that ring design on that outside may be a magnetic attachment for some type of mesh. Even just for storage vs dust

Saw some jokes going around on Head-Fi about the Susvara being ā€œUnveiledā€. My crude interpretation of that.

I donā€™t think thatā€™s actually possible if you look at it, the magnets are on the outside of the driver, and too closely spaced for a finger to get in there. Iā€™d be more worried about if itā€™s left unprotected, the magnets pulling anything charged in. But thatā€™s no worse than most EStats.
Itā€™d be slightly easier to poke something in there than with the current ones, so if your careless probably easier to damage.
I wonder if putting the caps on and off though is going to damage the painted finish (I think itā€™s painted) in the long run.

Itā€™s certainly a headphone Iā€™d think twice about buying used unless I knew the seller.

I donā€™t think theyā€™ll work for me, there are too many times a day I have to remove headphones on short notice. But in the end the Market will decide if itā€™s too hokey.

The ring to me looks like the mesh ring on the D8000. Maybe for ventilation for some reason?
