Oh I didnā€™t notice itā€™s glassā€¦ I wonder how it looks on the inside then. Glass is bad for acoustics.

That looks pretty sweet.

And apparently Dan Clark lurks the forum. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Only in the you donā€™t want big resonating sheets of the stuff uncovered in your 2Channel room sense. You wouldnā€™t want big sheets of hardwood or cast plastic in the room either.

Headphones arenā€™t listening rooms, glass has certain material properties, in the same way cast plastic or wood do, if it meets a need in the design, I wouldnā€™t rule a headphone out because of any rational material choice.

Oh Iā€™m not ruling it out, itā€™d be interesting to hear one.

Yes, but in this case itā€™s a closed HP. Iā€™m sure thereā€™s much difference in dealing between the two but is it not essentially a very small room? Wouldnā€™t you still have to manage the pressure and reflection regardless, albeit differently from a physical room?

But you have to do that with plastic, resin or wood, none of which are particularly absorbent in the frequencies you care about.

Depending on the thickness it might even have an advantage with resonance.

Iā€™d guess the primary reason it isnā€™t commonly used, is it pretty much only comes in flat sheets, and its extremely heavy, neither of which seem particularly useful for a headphone design

The only other closed back headphone that I know of with glass is the HD820. That seems to be a very divisive headphone with very mixed opinions. I havenā€™t heard one, so I canā€™t really comment.

Thereā€™s another oneā€¦ I think the 1more HP uses it too but they market it for aesthetics rather than any sonic benefitā€¦

I used to own one of those for portable purposes. The earpads were extremely problematic and uncomfortable for me. Sound wasnt bad for a closed back at that price range.

From ZMFā€¦

I know there was talk of these amps but were specs given anywhere? And is L0rdGwyn some headfi guy that started building amps under a dark souls reference?

There is a huge thread. He built the 45 and the new 2A3 tube amps for Zach.

He is also the designer of the Aegis and Airmid

I just dont think i have it in me to read a 400+ headfi thread. At least not right now.

But it looks like he is also building a PCM63 based DAC.

That 2A3 amp has top tier components. Monolith nano crystalline transformers and interstage coupling.

Zach is a big fan of his amps and appears to have a few.

The new ZMF-L0rdGwyn collaboration is going to be an Aegis, which started off as a DIY project, but Cayin is going to build the ZMF version.

Woah. Didnā€™t know that Cayin is going to build it!

Yeah, I asked Zach how he was going to keep up with demand, since L0rdGwyn is just one (very busy) guy and he said Cayin would do the manufacturing.

I didnā€™t ask any more about it, so this is just conjecture, but Iā€™m assuming that Zach and Cayin have a close relationship, since heā€™s a dealer of theirs, and they have the ability to build it to L0rdGwynā€˜a spec, and white label it as a ZMF amp.
