Thread for the various iFi desktop dacs
Any thoughts on the iFi Zen Dac V2? Some nice sales going on and i might swipe one if the general feeling is good.
As a dac its fairly enjoyable, on the more warmer fun leaning side of things, technically able for the money (not much more I can say there). As an all in one it can potentially be solid assuming ran balanced and with some less amp demanding headphones, but for some of the more picky budget headphones going for an external amp is worthwhile
What setup are you currently running right now?

I was thinking of pairing it with my Geshelli Archel2.5 as I’m getting tired of my E30.
Gotcha gotcha. If you wanted to add more warmth and body to your archel with a bit better space then I think it would be a solid move. I do think that it could potentially be a slight bit harsher on the top end, but it shouldn’t be bad enough to mess with the overall experience imo
This being said, I honestly might rather suggest you consider going a bit higher perhaps with a J2 modius, or allo revolution, I think that would be a more worthwhile upgrade overall

Its funny you mention it… I was thinking of grabbing a J2! Also considered a Modi Multibit BUT Bifrost always comes into the equation when i start thinking Schiit. I’ll look into the Allo Revolution and compare with everything mentioned.

Personally I’d pass on the modi mb, it’s a good dac in some regards, but I still think it suffers from dynamic compression and also a sense of almost mushiness. That being said though it’s spatial recreation, timbre, and detail retrieval are solid for the price (if only they made a new modi mb and used the output section from the modi 3+, that would be pretty awesome)
Yes going with a bifrost would be a pretty huge step up, although I think you’d find yourself getting more benefit putting that money into a nicer amp first, then bifrost lol. But you’d still be getting benefits either way
