Himbeer-Thread für Neulinge

Hello,

What do you need as a small know-nothing about the Raspberry Pi to make a streamer out of it?
Software, of course, but I was thinking of Volumio to start with.

I was thinking of the Pi 4 with 8 gb but very hard to find if you do it’s almost too expensive.
The one with 4gb is a bit cheaper but not much more.
But that’s because the market is not good.

I’m still thinking if I should take a kit that comes with a case etc…

I would take care of the power supply later to improve it.
I have the power supply from Sonore in mind, if that works?

There was supposedly talk that you need a Dac, is that true?
I would connect the Pi 4 normally to Singxer Su 2 via USB and that’s it.

Or should I do it more straightforward and go for the Allo Usb bridge when it is available again?

Would be nice if some would help and share their knowledge.

4GB is sufficient, I prefer Ropiee, but it requires you have something that will “stream” to it.
I’ve use Pi3’s and 4’s with 4Gb and 8Gb’s at various times.
Volumio is self contained with a web interface, so you can just point it at a share with music on it and login with a web browser.
You don’t “need” a case, but find something that’s attractive, I use this one on a lot of mine, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WMG27T7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Something that will passively sink heat for a pi4 is a good idea.

You can just connect the USB on the Pi to a DAC or SU2, or you can get a hat that provides SPDIF or AES.

The only gotcha with any of the installs assuming you have a way to flash an SDCard is you need to use hardwired ethernet for the initial setup in order to enable wifi. I had issues with Volumio and using 5GHz networking, it wouldn’t find the network on startup, 2.4GHz was fine, and both work for me on Ropieee.

Thank you for the feedback.:pray::pray::pray::pray::pray:
Um yes, I forgot to mention.
It would be Tidal as a streaming source.

There’s probably nothing from Audirvana that drives the Pi I assume?
What about the Logitech media software would that be usable?
With Roopie, I thought it would be more useful for Roon.

As for the rest, I have everything there, I would only integrate the Pi into the network via a LAN connection anyway.
I should also be able to flash the SD card .

I was thinking of the 8 Gb version in case there are updates, so I’m on the safe side because of the system requirements.
Not having to buy a new Pi right away.
The case with the link also looks nice, thanks for the tip.:+1:

I have taken a look at the hats.
I think my Dac is a bit better, the rest looks roughly okay, but if you really start from scratch I think it’s solid.
I2S actually controls the Su2 afterwards, at least I think so.

What app do you download for your tablet or smartphone to operate the whole thing?

The standard version of Ropiee is Roon only, but the XL version supports additional streaming formats, I don’t have anything running it anymore, so I can’t tell you exactly what.

They all have web interfaces, if you use volumio, you just open it in the web browser.
If you go with something like Ropiee, whatever you use to control whatever software is streaming to the device, in my case Roon.

With Ropieee, besides roon you do have other options to choose for streaming

Roon has its own tab -

And the other options come under the RopieeeXL tab. I am using Spotify too (Librespot)

I have several pi’s in different configs from no HAT to just USB, one with an Allo DigiOne HAT that lets me do spdif coax into a Yggy. I have another with a HifiBerry Digi2 Pro, also spdif hat with coax or bnc. using spdig into a Bifrost 2. (I do not recommend the hifiBerry hats you get what you pay for with this $40 board>USB out of the pi is better. Now the Allo boards are much better but I wish I had AES. The other pi I have is USB only and it sounds good on its own or via a DDC.

The pi’s I have are all pi4 2 w/4gb one with 8gb - just what was available at the time. I use ethernet where I can but also use wifi 2.4 and 5ghz with good results.

Hello.
Thank you for the impressions.
Sounds interesting.
Will it probably be Roopie Xl as software for now.

Instead of going full Pi you could also use this one if the usb connection is better there or?

Or is the usb board available separately from Allo?
Might be a good option to use the Pi4 with the Baord as the Pi4 is power isolated from Rj45 and Usb.

At the moment the market seems to be a bit empty.
The small project will have to wait a little longer.
Last week some Pi’s were available as a kit for up to 150$/€, a week later on average up to 170$/€.
Almost double what the Pi actually costs.
The Allo devices are supposed to be available again towards the end of August.

You could, those were not an option when I started looking into pi based players.

It looks like the sell it separately unfortunately the pi4s I have would not work. The Allo USBbridge uses the Pi compute module instead.

It is and what is available is marked up accordingly based on demand. The “inexpensive” pi solutions are for now near as costly as a purpose built solutions.

I’ll use the pi’s that I have for now where they fit in with my system, they were fun to build and tinker with and I did/do get benefit from them.

Yes the silicon supply chain issues were actually worse for non cutting edge parts than they were for cutting edge parts, so a lot of commodity parts are in short supply, making it difficult to produce things like Pi boards, demand goes up and so does pricing.
Unfortunately the nature of these sort of shortages is they take a long time to resolve, even as parts become readily available again.

There are supposed to be more, but not until autumn, when the price will of course drop back to normal.
That’s the good thing about it, the kits will also be cheaper again.

Nevertheless, it is also very cheeky of the dealers to demand double the price, even though they have bought it at the purchase price.
Even Ebay is affected.
Every now and then you come across cheap used ones or they are from a dubious dealer.

It’s a bit sad at the moment as far as that’s concerned.

Allo seems to be going in a completely different direction.
I don’t know if it will meet my standards.
