@dB_Cooper I’m sure someone will step up w/ the proper technical answer. In the meantime i will do my damndest the next few days to compare these two and the HD800s on different amps to see what differences i can discern with them all here in house. Maybe I’ll add the LCD-3 too just to keep things interesting. I was very surprised at how wildly the HD800s seemed to scale on my amp today. Kind of blew my mind, to have d this level of quality at my fingertips for so long and to have never tried this combo. It’s particularly humerous to have this conversation w/ you considering how you disliked the SQ of the Senn…
LOL I’m actually thinking of asking to borrow it again for a bit longer this time. I think it may mesh muy bueno with the Aural Audition (Salvation Army Donation bin) amp I’ve been playing with.
Ah, you understand the pain…’tis a beast of a track and to listen to it this many times and for so many hours….my brain hurts…and to fully appreciate the track you NEED volume, this evening’s relaxation session is literally at half volume and less of what i posted earlier and its perfectly fine and enjoyable. Those levels were allot and a bit painful for me earlier today.
I have no idea, there is certainly something to them liking power or current. But it’s something more that that, planars are pretty much resistive loads, so as long as it gets loud (requires < 1W) it shouldn’t matter. But it clearly does.
If I were speculating, I suspect it has to do with how it demands power and oversized power supplies are better equipped to deliver in response to transient demand.
But in my mind I have never heard a reasonable explanation.
Thank you! There’s bound to be one out there. lol
Whatever it is they absolutely do something different. Neither HiFiman unit has any issues at all on my speaker amp and my HE6se liked my last high power amp very much too. I have plugged each HP into my speaker taps multiple times today and cranked the volume to maximum listening for the faintest hint of noise, hiss, anything awkward or off at all. There is nothing, not the slightest hint of outside noise. Nothing else I tried today was this clean and quiet. The Senn HD800s comes close but NOT equal in being noise free, there is enough to be heard but not interfere with low level listening. I am believer in whatever magic HiFiman puts into their drivers.
Great write up!
I feel like the Susvara/HE6se aren’t really experienced until powered by a speaker amp (I’m aware there are plenty of great headphone amps, there’s just something special when you move to a full fledged speaker amp).
I’m glad you got a chance to try them in your own setup. That was a really nice and diverse grouping of headphones.
Also, those Grados look really nice. I may PM you for your impressions.
I mean. I know there are plenty of superb amps that are capable of handling Susvara well. I had a superb time with them on the WA33.
With that being said, this statement is also the downfall for this pair for me. I was an arm’s hair length away from getting one but figured if I was going to go through the entire ritual of undoing my speaker taps to attach to the susvara, I might as well listen to my 2ch and have a more pleasurable experience.
A different experience (I know many think is better, and I tend to agree), but I totally get that.
As long as you’re enjoying your tunes. 🤌🏽
@M0N can you think of any amplifier that would be upgrade from Violectric and would work nicely with susvara th900 and hd600? Dac would still be aqua and could be a bit more warmer than vio but not necessarily.
From the 550, right? I wonder if maybe Luxman P750u or LAu would work well for what you’re looking for. I don’t have a TH900, but do have a TH610 and think it, Sus, and HD600 do very well on the Crayon, but those aren’t exactly easy to come by.
yeah from 550. I am planing an operation Susvara so thinking about possible amp upgrade as well. I consider platauf or pathos as a possibilty but not sure how would those work with th900 and hd600
@Salguson always dangling that TH900 … You are going to be the one I call out when I re-buy one, lol
I am not gonna sell those. I will probably let go th909 but that saphire blue th900 is just closest to my preference I had.
Well I have learned a lesson personally and that is honestly, I prefer the Susvara on my v550 over an amp (I know,I know @Polygonhell and @M0N going to call me out for FOTM purchase but I am still learning and somethings you have to hear yourself) I purchased specifically to use with the Susvara that is currently a rage in the Susvara threads as a decent affordable and quite capable amp for the Sus.
Don’t sell that v550 short on that front and it also rocked the goods on my TH909s and TH900 as well as my still in house Lawton TH610 - and any other headphone I have put on it since purchased it.
Man I follow you steps. Similar purchases and similar taste in music. I was very tempted to pick up oor but had no funds. I pretty much love vio and with fostex best combo I had in the hobby, but I also know susvara might require some kind of upgrade so no point of keeping both. Susvara first and amp in the future. 550 + aqua will be my main chanin for a while. I didn’t plan to go after sus so soon but as it is always in life some things change and it has impact on all other things.
Got my order in for Arya V2 Will be my first 1k+ headphone ever, coming from Ananda and Ed. XS I’ve heard great things
Niceeeee, the Arya V2 sounds really nice from what I’ve read! Also I see your going hard on the Hifiman stuff lol, very nice!
I do love me some Hifiman headphones. I loved the Ananda but that death grip of a headband gave me lots of pain and headaches. Sidegraded to the XS and I like it but it doesn’t have the Soundstage wow factor like the Ananda or the details and clarity. I was always going to end up with Arya regardless
That being said once I receive Arya I should be at a nice stopping point. I’ve got other headphones I’m keeping my eyes on (Focal clear, LCD X or 3, HD 800)
Word i getcha, the headband on the 4xx was terrible too. The Hifiman Sundara is something I owned for a bit and tbh I’m still searching for that sound but with more impact. The sound signature itself, the presentation, speed everything was just beautiful. Want something like that with more impact tho. Honestly i might end up getting one again LOL. But yeah dude, excited to hear what u think about the Arya, might be something i keep an eye on as well. Also word about the LCD X or HD800s in particular those really interest me. I wonder if the LCD X might actually be the closest thing to an upgrade on the Sundara.
