Sony z1r (slightly over budget) or Sony z7 (slightly under budget) may be more readily available.
Edit: Also, this probably belongs in the General Headphone Help thread

This is helpful, thanks! My vote still goes with the used Eikon. Your original post you basically described an Eikon IMO lol.
I know a few people in here have experience with some of those so hopefully it garners some good advice.
Hmm might be able to buy some from ebay
you might also consider to level up your chain once you settle on headphones.
Since he is in EU, why not a Kennerton Gjallarhorn?
That would make a lot of sense stage and bass wise actually
You guys beat me to it. I was coming here to rec the Gjallarhorn. Stage and bass are very, very good. And vocals while not forward have really nice timbre and donāt get drowned out by the rest of the experience. Iām loving these headphones more by the day.
Hmm they sound interesting have to look in to them thanks guys
I want to like Ether CX more than I do. Itās not terribleāit just doesnāt feel like it competes well at its price point. Focal Elegias originally listed at $899, and overall I liked those more (still do).
Eikons were my first inclination, also. My camphor burl āpie-konsā (friend of mine thought they looked like pies, lol) were a co-favorite with Stellias for a while, until I got VC. Itās hard to think of any other closed back that are worth getting excited about in that price range. I like 1770s, Elegias, and then like VC and Stellia, lol. Thereās a pretty big gulf there in the middle with Eikons and not much else.
For him specifically the Kennerton Gjallarhorn and the Audio Technica AWAS could also potentially fit the bill but I havenāt heard them.
I like the Focal closed backs but he wants sound stage so that took them off the rec list IMO.
Nice Eikons
So after thinking i will just go for open backs the wife will just have to accapt it!
But damn those eikons looks so good
I feel like Iām watching a mistake happen real time
