Open Baffle I’ll start next, but currently not an right room for it. I like the sound, but need a lot of air behind/in the front.

Fully agree…
I’m a big fan of Sonido drivers (Hungary) Exceptional, handcrafted with Alnicos.
Having hear the SFR175A and 200A, just amazing…
And very cheap (perfect to start with, talking about 350€ a pair!).
Also Cube Audio is a killer, also for open baffle. They have real good energy through the spectrum and you can play any volume.
I need to really get some time at home with some of the cube audio stuff, been on my shortlist for awhile and seem well liked, been solid brief show demos as well
Just curious, but have anyone ever listen to salk songsurround plus before?
I saw these in the used market and it kind of peak my interest. I’m not going to buy them since the fund is low for the rest of the year for buying gifts, but I’m might considered these new or next time they appear in the used market next year.
Jim Salk builds excellent speakers and does really nice woodwork and finishes for what most of us consider realistic and relatively affordable pricing compared to the very high end speakers in the market. They are comparable in sound to just about any high quality box speaker using off the shelf components usually put together well using very standard box tuning.
There are allot of write ups on his products across multiple forums for general reference. The only thing of note I would warn you on is that most of his speakers are lower sensitivity on average and they tend to perform at their best with higher power amplifiers.
When you simply want a speaker that plays well overall, is not specific to a particular niche and you want something real pretty or want custom woodworking and style for a somewhat affordable price for years many have turned to SALK.
Do a little research and you should find my words about right on target.
Nice, thanks for the reply NickMimi! This speaker sounds like is for me lol. For something that is woodwork, and yet, kinda affordable, it’s pretty much what I am looking for. What really caught my eye was the woodwork, I thought it was really pretty and that would be nice to look at when listening to them. I think what attracted to me to it after a little research was it had a similar sensitivity to my Polk R200, so I won’t have to worry about getting another amp for it right away if I just get the speaker. I seen a lot of people talk about shipping pricing which could get pricey real quick. I will probably wait for one to go in the used market locally or keeping looking for more options.
But the Salk Songsurround Plus is something I will add to the wishlist and possibility for my upgrade path from my Polk R200.
Looking for some starting point options to research on efficient speakers, which can be driven by a low watt tube amp. I have a preliminary list of the following “
Zu
Omega
Klipsch horns
Devore
Audio Note
What specs should one consider besides higher sensitivity and ohm rating?
Amy other speaker companies or models I have left off my preliminary list above?
Thanks!
Decware speakers are efficient and looks good
Thanks, unfortunately I’m not willing to wait the 2 years for them to deliver. Very likely to be in a different house with a dedicated room, can wait 2 years for a component as that is more static.
Do you already have a low powered amp and that is determining your preference for a high efficiency speaker?
Understandable. You might lucky in the used market, but it’s not consistent and you can’t determine the model number either. I only have experience with Polk and Decware and I like Polk for bassy music and I like Decware for things more focus in the midrange. I read post that Omega is pretty great in the midrange as well, so that is something to think about.
If you are considering horn speakers, I remember talking to the Supratek repair guy and he told me horn speakers are usually use for classical music and jazz. If you want things like pop and rock, he told me to stick to “normal” speakers, which I did with my Polk R200.
Yes, it outputs about 6 Watts @ 8 Ohms
Appreciate the input, I already have normal speakers driven by my solid state integrated amp pushing out 75 watts a channel. Those same speakers don’t work great with the tube amp, and the expected upgrade to those speakers may not fare well either.
Fleetwood Devilles are 94db/1w/1m with 8 ohms impedance. What amp is it? All 6 watts are not same and not same in all speakers.
Wowza those are pricey!
Thanks for the suggestion, will add them to the list with an asterisk for life goals At that price I would go into something like a Magic A5 which were quite lovely when I heard them on a similar chain.
I would rather not say which amp it is just yet, what factors should I be looking at in the amp which would have an influence on the output to the speaker? It is a 300B SET amp if that makes any difference?
I don’t know if it was a coincidence but when I was in the market for speakers, there were 2 pairs on USAM at the same time (neither to my aesthetic preference). I think I saw someone say that part of their price is premium for looks as well.
Reason I asked for the amp was that some of the 300b amps I have been looking at in the 7-8W range sound very good for the power rating even for some <100 dB sensitive speakers, so in the range of mid 90s or even lower 90s. Eventually it boils down to having a good synergy so ideally if you could listen to them with the combination you intend to have would be best way to go but obviously its not always possible.
That is a high premium for aesthetics, but hey better than those robot or ultra modern looking $30k+ speakers!
Good to know this aspect, thank you for sharing!
If I remember right, Magico A5 require a crap ton of power and also at that sensitivity and price range, I’d totally go for Borresen. Something like the new X3, although I’m crazy biased.
Sorry was crossing integrated amp and tube amp streams mentioning the Magico. I heard it off a Naim amp with a td dac and was enthralled. At the price range, which for me is a long stretch it is more about what I have heard vs. what is recommended.

Also for your room size the older Spatial Audio M4 Triode Masters
And again for your room size the Klipsch Forte, nothing larger
