Anyone heard of Pure Audio?
Yes, at the recent audio show in MD, they were well represented in several rooms w/ their bigger more advanced offerings. This is basically their base model, “baby” speaker, they get more complex and more expensive beyond this point. The seller is also not a neophyte and has a good grasp of his equipment choices based on his other classified listings.
Open baffle designs are not for everyone and you should take your room and other equipment into consideration along w/ your preferences in music and what you desire the sound to be like. I am currently sharing a pair of open baffles ( Spatial Audio M4 Triode Master Speaker Review - HomeTheaterHifi.com ) w/ DbCooper and experiencing their sound in my own home, they are good speakers, and do things unlike box speakers. I would absolutely love to own a bigger more complex design but they would not be my ONLY speakers, i could never bring myself to settle on just this one design.
The Quintet w/ the Voxative speaker in the middle was wonderfull from my recollection and despite my favoring horns was my own personal preference over their horn design, they had both at the show in different rooms.
Thanks for reply.
Did you post anything yet about the M4? Would love to hear your thoughts on them.
In March they’ll be here. You can listen to them yourself! I’ve been meaning to try a pair of open baffles and the price and location was just too perfect to pass up on these.
I’ll definitely take you up on that offer.
Hi all,
I’m looking for a pair of active speakers to use on desktop stands for near-field use. This will be for music enjoyment, no professional use.
My shortlist so far is the following:
- Buchardt A500
- Kef LSX II or LS50W(might be too big)
- Genelec G Four or Five (Five might be too big)
- Neumann KH 120
- JBL 4305P or the upcoming 4329P Studio Monitor (definitely too big)
- Devialet Phantom II - not ideal feature/connectivity wise but looks interesting
I might also look to add a subwoofer down the line if needed with a mini DSP etc.
Any thoughts and opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!
I have the Genelec G Three and tbh it’s hard to imagine something bigger on the desk
In the near future i may have my hands on a pair of Totem Dreamcatchers and i was wondering if anyone had any amp suggestions? (This may be a source question in hindsight please move is so)
New to loudspeakers so this is my first attempt at branching into “two channel” stuffs. So entry level to mid range is preferred, something i can build towards. But if a magical pairing exists please let me know!
Hey there @TechnicolourDunk . Congratulations on the new speakers.
Knowing nothing about what your preferences are, your room size, source material and equipment, so basically knowing nothing at all I did a quick look up on the speakers.
Based on this gentleman’s technical qualifications a decent tube amp, of about 35-60 wpc. Rough cost todays equivalent MSRP. $5k should suffice.
Good luck, and congratulations again!
If only I knew of a good tube amp in the $5-6K range with 50wpc that might be for sale soon
Random thought, but curious if anyone else feels similar: Have high efficiency speakers generally been better overall vs the less sensitive competitors? Feel like the best speakers I’ve heard consistently end up being high efficiency (above 90-95db) and run off SET amps (sometimes biamped), enough to where I started wondering why that was lol. Did it have to do with the ability to run off lower wattage set amps? Is it because higher efficiency speakers have lower power demands keeping amps in their sweet spots and less stressed (also ties into the set amps)? Is it because a lot of high efficiency speakers tend to be voiced a specific way and that’s just my preference lol (although this isn’t likely the case lol)? Is it because there’s typically less gain required in the overall system which could play into allowing for higher performance preamp and amp designs (as in the less amplification needed throughout the chain the better)? Genuinely don’t know, and just throwing it out to see
I guess in my mind I already view lower power SET amps as giving the best sound per dollar source gear wise a lot of the time if you can use them, and those are really only viable due to high efficiency speakers, so that’s kinda the explanation that makes the most sense to me but I really don’t know lol
it’s probably a combination of things. high efficiency speakers also tend to be ultra specialized as far as design, specialized horns, back loading, esoteric builds and shapes to get that efficiency and of course a lot of single full range drivers in the lot.
The speakers themselves like you say allow for simpler SET amp designs. Power and power handling with complex cross over networks allow for a lot of compensation and correction of flaws that high efficiency speakers typical solve for through mechanical design not electronics.
Personally and IMO only, higher sensitivity speakers offer me the “most bang for the buck”. I own more speakers rated at 92db or higher as opposed to those at 89db and lower and yes I too have my reasons and preferences but it’s all situational. Same with SET and DHT amplifiers, they tend to be my more preferred over the push pull, Class A, hybrids, and every other topology for raw musical satisfaction BUT they have limitations and yet again are a situational product in my home.
I’ve not been able to ever decide on a single topology or speaker style simply because there are situations where i want opposite qualities out of my system for a particular type of performance that for various reasons my SET/high sensitivity combo is simply not the appropriate package for the job.
Interesting you brought this up, I have much to say based on fact, performance and experiences and I’m curious to see where this topic of conversation takes us over the next few weeks.
I have HSU HB-1 MkII’s and Emotiva BasX A-100 amp. Am pretty happy with the general sound, having tried about 6 other speakers like KEF Q150, ELAC B6.2, Vanatoo, etc. I don’t think they sound like studio monitors, and I like that, from the few I tried(Presonus). I would say they are probably warm, smooth, organic sounding.
From here, I suppose I would like to increase all technical traits, while maintaining that enjoyable warmth and easy listening treble smoothness. Not interested in a sub(too overpowering, imo), so I want to get as much bass reach as possible from each speaker, which is perhaps the weakest area of my HB-1’s(6.5", 60Hz).
Currently looking at upgrading to a budget Crown amp(or a current Emotiva), but that could easily change, as I have no idea what else might be out there. I would be open to having a center channel setup, but 2 strong performing speakers should be plenty.
~$1000-2000+ for 2 speakers, let’s say. Open for convincing out of that range, depending where the value sweet spots happen to be. My obvious choice in mind is HSU CCB, but that only gets me to 50Hz. (I have heard Harbeth’s are something special)
Typical small to medium room, no treatment. Typical entertainment use around PC.
Are you open to buying used? Where are you located?
My experience with 2 channel is likely much more limited than this forum but I do find myself moving away from the more efficient speakers. I’ve heard ~5 or so tektons and Zus in the past year and find myself being less wow’d by them as time has moved on. I’ve really enjoy the open baffle sound of spatial/maggie and would like to try the GR NX-otica someday.
But really my ending point will likely be a set of Harbeth 40.3’s based upon the 2 setups I’ve heard. The big money wilson and Focals are more impressive in a big treated room but the Harbeth fit my preference and likely a more modest room and end game budget.
Might be. Nice to have return options. Minnesota. My local store has a decent selection, but likely only the biggest brands.
I really want to try the Buchardt S400 mk2 and they fit the description of what you’re looking for and almost the budget.
There’s a trio for sale on USAM at the moment too and he listed them as a pair as well.
Ooo, 33Hz! Very nice They look fairly small, even!
Look here, many deals on speakers that meet your requirements and budget.
