I had a very similar reaction but not with Genelecs. My chain at the time was wavedream XLR → Luxman L550axii → Susvara and Dynaudio Focus 110s. I felt like the 110s were way more enjoyable than the Susvara and that basically made me sell all my headphone gear and focus only on my desktop setup. Hopefully I can ask you what speakers work the best for you so I can follow along.
I think sometimes our brain just needs and welcomes “different.” As long as the
different is GOOD different. Enjoy!
That’s similar to what I felt at first too when I tried some focal shape 50s placed properly. But, for me, it didn’t last long after being able to hear the problems in my room. Haven’t used them since… Lol
I have been harking and pushing the concept of the “right gear for your tastes “ for a long while now. Most equipment no matter what it’s price point will perform to the best of its abilities. There is not much garbage out there and the little there is will show it’s inadequacy and be slaughtered by end users, despite what all the “professional” and amateur reviewers/salesmen say. (Different topic that I don’t want to further argue about)
@orrman we had many private discussions in the past, and I questioned you on your music choices, lately though your choices and tendency has been towards music that requires equipment not really oriented towards low power, high dynamics, low volume listening. You seem, by your statements to desire more punch, slam and especially color🤗. I very much enjoy these characteristics and have equipment choices handy to swap and set up to play with these characteristics when desired.
I see you slowly settling into your preferences and making choices again in the near future and that’s not only good but part of the experience of the hobby and proper growth.
Good luck, this will be enjoyable to follow along.
I agree with everything you said but caught by surprise with the color comment. I’m actually under the impression now that my music choices and sound preferences lean a little dry and without a lot of color. What makes you think otherwise?
If this is the case, save yourself some cash chasing the Mojo!
Yep, realized that yesterday. The Rockna might actually be perfect for me after all. Would like to try the Berkeley DACs as well but for now I think I don’t need to focus there. Need to rethink some of my other parts of the chain, starting with the Omega and subwoofers I guess.
This is exactly what Abbas does…
Maybe I look at the music differently than you, so please don’t take my words as gospel but the genre’s you were speaking about lately to me are what “color” comes across in my opinion. Exaggerated top end, exaggerated bass with allot of low end rumble and mid bass punch. In your face vocals and midrange. All settings from the recording studio pushed up to maximize club, vehicle and listening while wearing earbuds from the average user.
You are not speaking about genres played in small intimate clubs or enjoyed in quiet room while sipping a whiskey and relaxing.
That is just the image and vibe I get though, so agin please forgive me if I am way off base.
Interesting take.
In my mind color isn’t actually a description of music but how the system might alter the original recording to any end.
I also think your description is more accurate to what popular EDM and pop are these days, which isn’t what I listen to.
Which of these two would you call colored? I’ve been playing both quite a lot this week. Which is also a good example of why it’s probably impossible to build one system for all music.
btw for the first one I’ll pick the D8000 Pro LE or the Genelecs. For the second the Susvara or the Omega off the Z40+ although it’s probably better with something warmer, smoother and meatier.
I will find myself listening to both just as much, with a tad more desire to prioritize how my system is built more for the electronic music than the rest. That’s why I agree with you that going after the Omegas probably wasn’t a good fit for me. The LTA is debatable since this is their strongest offering and isn’t really low power. Obviously not 800wpc solid state but still decent.
I don’t want to own multiple amps and DACs and speakers and that makes it complicated. I feel that between the Susvara and D8K I’m actually covered on the headphones end. If the 1266 was more comfortable or the Utopia a little more to my taste then I’d add them but I’m perfectly fine with the two I have (and mysphere lol). The Genelecs are perfect for the desk, potentially with a sub. It’s the main 2ch that I feel needs rethinking
The Astrix and Torrance music is what I look at as needing a system that fits my previous description.
I agree with your observation on my use of the word color and it probably does not apply in your case, my apologies.
Your descriptions of the EDM etc were spot on, I am not familiar with your music choices but I assumed them similar, bad on me for making the assumption.
If you manage to find speakers that please you across the board, that would be great. I have not heard any systems that do that for me, I want what particular pieces of equipment add and at the price points I play with I can’t have extra midrange warmth in one system and extra bass punch and V curve with a stronger top end on a system tuned for the opposite character thus I swap out to get what I desire. This is just an example, and obviously not what you want.
You have a solid grasp of your desires and wants, I look forward to seeing which direction you move in.
Open Baffle Speakers are really cool, i still don’t understand how they manage to work so well and produce such a beautiful soundstage and just a hell of a natural sound but they do. Add some good equipment and the fact that i find them eye pleasing and sooo much easier to move around and you have winners. The fancy factory made ones ones cost allot but i can see folks w/ woodworking skills and access to appropriate equipment making themselves speakers that hit and perform thousands of dollars above their production cost.
@dB_Cooper , i believe you will really enjoy these and they don’t need much in terms of wattage to shine. (Thus far I have pushed them w/ 6 wpc and 140 wpc and all 3 amps had wonderful results, genre dependent); Spatial audio M4 Triode Masters…BTW, despite my room being a bit ”large” for these speakers, they still make magical things happen w/ the sound, specifically they are extremely and pleasingly holographic.
My wife is going to kill me. Where you have them placed is probably a foot wider than what I’d be able to get in my room, so the fact that you’re happy with the placement there is encouraging. Thank you for picking them up, be a good steward for a while and I’ll go get them in few months.
I can’t believe you painted your walls to match the finish.
How are you getting them home? Lmk if you need an suv and I’ll take a ride with you. Lol.
I will probably drive them up to him, because you know, great food in his city.
If he empties out the entire vehicle i think they may just fit in their boxes…probably…maybe
In every way? I can see how someone might prefer the comfort, sound sig or drive-ability, but there is no way the he1000 outperforms the susvara with the right source gear. Is this a common opinion that i haven’t been aware of…
Words and opinion. The internet is full of preferences and peoples own little agendas. He knew what he was saying and is hoping his words will help bring prices down is all. This is a finicky market that swings wildly, audiophiles and their dollars…There you go, more words and baseless opinion
lmao, I guess I’ll hop on the train until I sell my he1000se (the best headphone on the planet)
Went to my local pro audio shop to pickup some custom cables i ordered (will post in bought thread). They have a demo room which I always check out. They new Adam A7t (replaced the a7x) is fantastic.
They also had a genelec 2.1 setup there that was right up my alley:
8330l se triple sam
I think this exact setup:
Does anybody have experience with this model?
It was their demo model about 18 months old that they would sell to me for 2000. Not sure if this is a decent price or not?
I have the simpler G Three which is the SAMless equivalent of the speakers in that kit I believe and they are outstanding.
I believe for $2K that’s a really good price if this is what you’re looking for
