General Source Gear Help/Discussion Thread

congrats & be warned, long cables and screamers don’t blend well

It comes with a wired remote, but ideally you snip that.

So as I prep for the arrival of my Aries G1… I think I’m going to wait on DDC for now (let’s see how long I’ll keep that thought - already saw a Denafrips Hermes and Iris looking at me in USAM).

Is there any data available or opinions around which output to use in the G1 and which input in the Rockna Wavedream?

I can do USB, AES, or SPDIF to Coax…

If we’re already at it - would a DDC like the Iris be a dramatic improvement? Going USB to it and I2S from it. My guess is not as much as getting the streamer…

This is only from my experience.

When I got my first streamer, I also had a USB reclocker as well (specifically SotM tx-usbultra). When I was doing some experimentation with it, it made me discover how important the cables were in this case. Strangely, I noticed that having a really good cable definitely outweighed having the reclocker in between with one of the cables being crappier. Did the reclocker improve the setup? Yes. but I needed two nice cables. The whole thing ended up becoming way more of an investment than I anticipated, so I slimmed it down and kept to my single better usb cable.

TL;DR. Yes, it can be a help. It may be costlier than you think. If I had to estimate, the streamer will be a larger improvement than the DDC. The DDC is just really useful for the users that really want to multitask and stay on their PC

I would 100% prefer to get some cables to finish the chain over adding another box to it so what you’re saying makes me happy.
I also don’t really mind leaving 1-2% of audio quality behind considering where I believe I got to with my gear.

If you were curious, the two usb cables at the time were a fta callisto and a sablon panatela

So when I first got my Mystique V3, what jumped out at me was the way it presents space, but not so much the overall stage and more that each individual sound has a space to it.

I saw the phrase “sound stage ambient bloom” the other day, which is pretty close to what I’m trying to describe.

This is the highest tier DAC I’ve heard, so I wanted to ask, is this something that the Mystique is particularly good at, or is this just one of those things that happens with every DAC as you move up the ladder? (And if it /is/ a specific trait, are there other comparably-priced DACs that are also standouts in this area?)

It’s a good way to put it, I describe what I think you are trying to say as hearing the space around the instruments.

As you move up the ladder, so many things improve. Yeah there are house sounds and signatures etc, but in general everything improved. I like to look at it as, the higher you go, there is no crap, there’s just different flavors and preferences. The trick is to find which one is YOUR preference. In the end, there are always compromises but the quibbles get smaller and fewer.

Question!

Just bought this dac! My question is, am I OK running this through usb?? It says it comes with a D/C A converter but I don’t even know what that is

Congrats on the new DAC!

I had a pretty bad time running the Exogal through USB because I was using my laptop and the USB input has like no isolation, but I imagine if you’re running an SOtM or something, you’d probably be fine?

Whats that? Is there any other good input I should try instead of usb?

Oh huh, I guess the forum doesn’t have an SOtM thread. I was thinking of the sMS-200 (and the various fancier versions, such as the ultra neo), but there are a bunch of streamer/reclocker-type devices that fall into this category, including the Sonore microRendu that I just bought.

I mostly used my Exogal over AES from my SU-2 KTE, and that worked pretty well for me. I imagine coaxial S/PDIF would also be fine.

Hmmmm over buying one if those streaming devices I am kinda interested in doing coaxial if possible. I wonder if I could connect it to my tablet

Dammit, have you not read all the stuff I have written about this DAC???:triumph:
It will pick up all the noise your source makes, over USB. It will run via AES and SPDIF quietly but most folks output USB and there is noise there from inexpensive sources. Especially laptops.
Pm or text me and I’ll walk you through everything you need to know if you want.

Edit: I don’t see the silly little remote either and that’s a potential issue…
Also download the manual and follow the instructions.
You listening @Littledrummerboy :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I’ll have to pm u lol. Yeah I seriously don’t know none of this stuff. I have always just connected via USB to a Dap

That’s one way to get off of a noisy laptop or tablet… get a dac that forces you to do it

I’m sorry that it sounds like a more expensive purchase than you anticipated though. I bet it’ll be nice once you get it all figured out

Does that mean you have to keep the dap now?

Not keeping the Dap, that’s now part of the past lol. But I talked to nick mimi in private, ended up canceling the exogal thing with them. Looks like if I have to spend the extra cash for the ddc or streamer etc for the exogal comet I’ll just end up giving up the cash and buy a yggy which I can use more easily, connecting by USB to my tablet lol

So, I’ve decided to go all in on upgrading my source gear. The LTA MZ3 will take a few more weeks to reach me, but I’m already looking for dacs and amps to pair and compare. I’d love to do some of my own testing, to get a better feel for my preferences as well as being able to assess source gear better.

I would very much appreciate if you could recommend me brands or gear that

  • costs around 2-3k (can be higher or lower, but I’m aiming at a certain performance level)
  • located in the EU (so I don’t have to worry about import taxes)
  • doesn’t have to match or contrast the MZ3 in any way. Just let me know what you’ve made good experiences with or heard good things of
