General Source Gear Help/Discussion Thread

You understood exactly what i was looking for.

I was more of just suprused that none of the hugh end streamers had USB input at all tbh (would have figured at least one would have).

Ty for the options. I doubt ill be upgrading before o get a dac (unless i like buy a berkeley that cones with the alpha). Was more of currious what to set allerts for and look into so this helps a lot. I had forgotten about the gaia tbh but the other options are new to me so that helps a lot

But why? As in, what would be the point? Because then you’d just be bypassing the streamer/server part of the streamer/server, which is really typically what you pay for. I’m also sure it’s probably not great in terms of injecting noise into the system which they are exactly trying to get away from that, so why would they encourage users to connect a PC to it by having that?

I do agree there’s a lack of higher end ddc and usb reclockers, which is why you see people just typically chaining them together to try and get closer to what servers/streamers can achieve (but they are also typically used with them too lol)

I didnt mean that they should but more of that (with how much gimiky shit sometimes gets put on audio stuff) I was simply surprised not a single designer did it just because (kinda view it the same way I do having clock outputs on devices that also have clock inputs where its like “weird choice, but I guess I can see a use for that”)

TBH I havent looked into this a ton yet, but people that need to use a computer source in the higher end often end up stacking stuff like that? I guess it make sense. Like clean the USB and then send the cleaned signal in to be converted to something else.

I think there’s also two types of getting audio out of your computer. There’s the need to get a clean signal out if you’re going to use it as the source of a high quality music chair or if it’s simply going to be for your standard computer audio, games, or YT videos.

A USB signal cleaner may be enough for games or YT or you may want to have that be the first step in a multi step process.

How I have mine setup is somewhat a combination for both best sound and more daily use, I have my antipodes going into my totaldac reclocker into the dac for when I want to seriously listen, but I also have my pc connected to the totaldac reclocker with usb as well for when I want to just use it as a pc dac, but I use another usb filter in front of that too to prevent pc noise from causing any issues

So reclockers don’t clean up noise as well, am I getting that right? Or are there some that do both?

Typically most do both, depends on the unit at hand. They typically regenerate the signal itself so that accomplishes both, some will only filter noise and not recreate the signal

Iirc you use the jcat? Is that also a galvanic isolator i assume?

No jcat anymore, found it to be worse in line vs just a single fta callisto (but better than when using lesser usb), I use an ideon 3r master time blackstar edition now with fta sinope for both inbetween

Do you use any of the above with an upgrade clock/use them all with a world clock? Tbh just trying to even understand what the options even are in terms of usb (out of the computer) sources.

They can’t, I don’t have the option to take either a wordclock or 10mhz reference on my main desk. Would be cool if they did, unfortunately they don’t lol

For some reason i thought both had a clock in tbh.

Speaking of a devil.

I have not used the Innuos unit BUT do not find the SOTM unit “thin” sounding at all as stated in his add. Just saying…

This is probably a long shot, but has anyone had ears on the CEntrance HiFi-M8 V2? (It’s a Bluetooth DAC/amp brick, somewhat similar to an iFi xDSD.)

Yep, it’s awesome albeit large (larger than the xdsd for sure), personally prefer it to the ifi diablo

Sweet, thanks! That’s cool to hear, and yeah, it doesn’t seem great for pockets, but at least they make use of the extra chonk to give it an XLR output.

I also had one shortly and was fairly impressed. I kinda view it as a tier above the mojo 1 and a similar technical level to sp1k. I didnt try it as a pure amp though as i didnt have ky p6p yet at the time

Hello guys,

Does anyone have a tip for a good Dap?

I first had my eye on the Ifi Gryphon but somehow it’s annoying to have to use a smartphone or tablet all the time.

I had the Cayin n3pro in mind but that is also out.
Because it’s not wifi-enabled and only works via Bluetooth, and doesn’t offer any direct streaming providers.

Yesterday I discovered the Shanling M6 21.
It looks quite passable.
Wifi and Bluetooth enabled, has Apk Store for streaming providers and more available for download.
Especially for Tidal, Shanling recommends downloading the playlist and listening offline, which would be exactly my thing in terms of operation.
The only drawback is that it does not support Apple via USB as a Dac.
It does on Android and charges the battery at the same time.

I wanted to ask again if there is something better for just under 600$ or if it is really okay?

Dac is an ESS 9038 Q2M dual and also selectable as single if needed.
And is supposed to be quite well tuned, less to no harsh highs, neutral and warm according to test.

What do you think?

That Shanling looks real nice tbh! Sadly when it comes to DAPs im pretty limited in what ive used, only used a Hiby R5 which is well under your budget and a R6 2020 which is slightly above it by 99 but i know that @Hazi59 likes shanling DAPs and the one you mentioned really does seem nice Also having Android DAPs is always useful indeed. Actually now that I think about it the Astell & Kern SR25 used is around 600 (or even cheaper i think) and it does work with tidal, has bluetooth and other streamers (other apps but not every app like spotify dosen’t work or if it does i had troubles with it.)
