General Source Gear Help/Discussion Thread

Yeah I’m convinced, I’m going for it. Unfortunately I have also bought a Pathos Aurium the other day so…yeah. The seller said that it isn’t a problem for him to wait, once I get the Pathos I will decide whether to keep it or the Feliks, sell one of the two and then buy the Bakoon.

Also, thanks to everyone for their inputs.

Was wondering what people considered upgrades to the p6 pro dac wise? Would I need to go for something higher than say a 2541 in cost? I’d love to get a higher end setup that performs in a similar sounding way that the bf2 & monotor sounded with the clears but with probably better resolution and placement. Wanting to get a rough possible upgrade path although I think I may sway towards going down the speaker route.

I’d personally say things like a yggy a2 or xi sagra trade some blows to the p6p (although I might slightly prefer the full size dacs still), so at least something of that level

Yes

Well dac wise that’s easy, go for an og yggy a2 if you want a direct bf2 upgrade, other options exist as well lol, there’s a lot of them that will depend on the amp you go for

Headphone wise, the move to the utopia makes a lot of sense imo

an upgrade to the monotor could depend, I’d look into mass kobo stuff, actually potentially a mz3 or mz2 + lps, pass hpa-1, allnic hpa-3000 gt, or if you can find a DSHA3F or T4 that would be sweet as well.

For speaker options I won’t comment there as much lol, this is more for an upgrade for headphones (but if you get a headphone amp with a preamp out, you can easily grab a power amp and use it for a combined headphone and 2ch setup)

For which combination would depend on what amp or dac you go for first, and tailor from there

Thanks for that, I’m surprised how favourably it sounds like it performs compared to dacs like the sagra and yggy tbh

Mass Kobo gear has always interested me, the 424/428 sound like they’d be really good. The MZ2/MZ3 could also be a pretty good shout, would work for speakers too although I’m not sure whether it’d be better to go separate for headphone & speaker amps. Guessing that something like an MZ2 wouldn’t work the best with Focals as much?

Utopia is the idea eventually but I want to get my own Clear OG in the meantime

Yeah I think I’ll need to figure out what headphones I want to go for first although I am pretty set on getting a Clear OG since it’s been my favourite headphone so far, I do want to try out a HD800s at some point, in terms of speakers I know I’ll need to go demo some in a store, the shop near me has some very nice gear there.

It’s almost there, the internal dac is really good lol

I was thinking more 433 but a 424/428 would actually be just fine for a clear, and you can use it like a desktop amp if you want

It would make a great pre, it could drive very sensitive speakers but better pre than amp. In terms of synergy, it’s actually pretty great with the utopia, and nice with the clear

I always wonder what a good USB reclocker would do for using the p6p as a dedicated dac since I’ve noticed that over USB it’s not quite as good as direct

I forgot about the 433, didn’t see it on their site until I looked at the stock list (although they have none)

I didn’t realise how well it synergises with the focals, always like the idea of tubes

To follow up with what M0N said i think the sagra is probabaly superior in resolution but i find it pretty lacking in emotion with most stuff tbh. I think its maybe a half step above the p6p with my subjecyive prefrencing going to the p6p (for local files at least). That said, i prefer the yggy a2 to the p6p for all the amps ive throw on it so far and also consideri it around a half step up from p6p. If you like bf2 a yggy is a solid shout imo

As fpr the 428, i ise mine with a ps as a desktop amp more than i use it for portable duty tbh

I would agree, both dacs are a bit of a step up from the p6p overall, but for how close the p6p gets for being portable it’s a feat on it’s own

For psu at a desk, I use a fidelizer nikola2 that has solid synergy with the amp, enjoy what it does to the sound. Is “small” enough to take with me from time to time as well

hahaha. That is very very true. Not to mention that the internal amp stage is also honestly just fantastic. Not the most resolving when compared with TOTL portable options (though not exactly worlds behind) but the most organic staging and best timbre ive heard mobil. I do listen quite quiet tbf (average low 60 dBs while I work) but for background kind of “cafe jazz” if you will P6 Pro directly to susvara actually leads to a dumb organic and coherent presentation even if clearly underpowered (obviously). It may even be my favorite portable susvara presentation for that kind of music. TBH, over all, the P6P is just a bit dumb competent from a SQ perspective. Here is to hoping the LP7 Ti fixes the USB SQ issues (since in my experience the USB drops the dac performance like a tier or more though I dont have any crazy USP chains which may help it).

Interesting, Ill look into it. I just use an ifi x-power if I am honest. I have a super higher current battery pack that does sound slightly better but the convenience of the x-power wins out for desk usage most days for me. TBH, with how seldom I use this thing portable now I should realy just upgrade for a 394II.

I doubt it, but we can hope lol. Although, that could be a non issue if it has spdif input since you can just use a ddc there

Honestly I probably wouldn’t lol, I’m only using it since I have it, it’s not worth the cost otherwise. Yes I’d really just consider grabbing a 394ii if you mainly use it at a desk

They are supposedly fixing the 16 bit limitation with the the 7 (both P and LP) as well as the horrid UI, so it is a posability. Talking to andrew a fair bit (and a LP fanatic buddy who is in a weichat group with the founder) they are well aware that the horendous USB implementation (including not remebering to stay on USB audio when restarted, the volume when in USP audio, and the outright SQ over USB) is a major sticking point for the west (apparently its much less of an issue in china where people are far far more willing to just use BT for some reason according to them)

Yah. Makes sense. Ill probabaly put out a WTB add eventualy. Been kinda lazy selling shit recently. I should probabaly just get back on top of that

Good to hear. I’ve just been keeping myself intentionally in the dark with the 7ti, so I’m not constantly thinking about it lol, hopefully I can forget until one shows up at the door

only reason I’m keeping up to date on it is so that I make sure I have the probabaly obscene amount of cash it will cost nice and freed up as soon as they start taking pre-orders. I mean, from word on the grape vine it may well work out more than I’m currently planning on spending on my main desktop dac

So I put my p6p into my speaker setup today… :eyes: man its way more energetic, only got to listen to one song but it was a big upgrade. It really should’ve been noticeable anyway since I had an iDSD as the dac before :joy:

Talking about energetic, very important question. I reeeally enjoyed the Sr25 from Astell&kern. Like I found it sooooooooo very fun. So of course if I wanted to get a better Sr25 I would probably assume that I need to get a higher end dap of theirs. But it I just wanted a dac with that type of sound and at least bifrost type of performance what would be worth looking at?

It’s a bit hard explaining what made the Sr25 so fun but it just seemed energetic, partially speed but also the way it presented detail. Everything was just different. Also remember even hooking it up to my car and being like WOW even my car speaker livens up! Sometimes I just want FUN!

Ps. Hiby RS6 when using Oversampling gets closer to this than NOS but still completely different from Sr25

IIRC the Ares II could possibly offer that, I’m going off of memory here of both but the ares seems to give a bit more speed over the bf2 from what I remember

INTERESTING. I’ve heard the name of that dac but know nothing of it. How about the staging? And does it focus more on detail and intricate layering over the bifrost? Because that’s more what I would be aiming for. Again just loved the way thr A&K presented that stuff even if it was less cohesive and less natural

Expansive and holographic although not as natural as the bf2

Yes, although it’s not like it’s a big jump over the bf2 either

So first quick thoughts on the hibiki sds, it did have a substantial burn in period, and is likely still going through it so this will likely change later on. Honestly so far, this really does remind me of a dcs dac in terms of it’s great smoothness and density, it’s doing quite well with this, although differs in other aspects and also clearly not the same tier. Resolution is also fairly strong which is nice to see. Overall presentation is fairly organic overall, which I honestly wasn’t really that expecting, it’s a warmer leaning signature actually so not as clean or brighter leaning as dcs for example. It does remind me of the airist as it’s a richer leaning dac that does focus on being more forgiving, organic, and relaxing. Timbre pretty solid overall, and tonality is great too. Speed and separation are pretty good, it’s able to keep everything reasonably quick and not squished together even with it’s more focus on being smooth and rich.

So far stage is accurate but does seem to be on the more intimate side of things, I wish it could be more expansive, so far this is a weaker point. Dynamically micro is great but macro is lacking, it feels somewhat restrained there. Impact and slam are all right, seems a bit weaker there than I personally like though, although that might be more an issue with overall control.

Keep the PLL on, it sounds a lot better. Interestingly, it’s more neutral with PLL off, but feels more overall flat or lifeless, it simply just is better with pll enabled.

Currently it feels like the goal of this dac is to push everything forward in a casual way, somewhat like how the morpheus goes about things, although I think this is overall still a bit more balanced than the sonnet from memory, and it’s presentation doesn’t have that wall of sound esque thing that the sonnet is so good at, it’s more traditional. Have yet to run a nicer clock into this thing, but I would hope that would better address the stage thing for me

From what I read in the Chinese audiophile forums people seem to think a nice DDC and clock is a must for the hibiki, although apparently not every clock is compatible with it
