General Source Gear Help/Discussion Thread

Interesting. Reviews online have had many people using them with amps with good results. The puritan is basically a super power bar so if you plug an amp into a power bar then why not a puritan?

Some like to plug amps direct into a wall outlet though so if thats a practice one subscribes to then no need for any power solution past the outlet.

Ive been told by dealers that the little power plant 3 is only good for digital sources, again the dealers opinion, due to power restrictions that amps might introduce. First place Ive seen someone mentioning this about the puritan so Im wondering if there is something I dont know.

Figured that was not much of a stretch

Unrelated to the Berkeley but related to the Sonic Frontiers SFD, It’s by far my favorite DAC to use daily, and if it goes down I would be bummed.

Which current offerings get close to the characteristics of the SFD in your experience? Mojo Audio, TotalDAC….?

Hmmmm that’s a tough one, in terms of direct upgrade along a really similar vein, I’m not really sure, I do think that mojo and totaldac would be something that sorta captures what it’s good at although I’m not sure I’d consider it a close alternative to the sfd, I actually think a lavry quintessense or actually a DA924 might be something that sorta reminds me of the older more classic dacs in how it goes about things with a more modern spin. Hmmmm it’s really been awhile since I’ve heard a sfd, so I think I’d really have to hear one to make more modern comparisons imo

Thanks, I will check those Lavry models out!

Im curious about the GSX mini, its a very divisive product

I recall someone here liked it very much

What does it sound like? Is it like an aggressive brighter soloist? Example of a good pairing?

Also I find weird that its not “that expensive” but buying used its almost always close to the brand new price

Also measurement oriented folks seem to love it for its subjective sound

Does anyone have experience with the Audioquest Coffee USB cable?

I’m curious about their DBS active noise trap.

What budget streamers other than the Holo Red do Ethernet straight to I2S?
On the high end I know antipodes K50 and wavedream NET do it.

EDIT: just remembered the new Matrix element S will do that do but that’s about $1500…

iFi’s Neo Stream does, but it’s $1300. It also has an optical LAN that looks interesting.

The updated Pi2AES 2.0 has it, although the I2S pinout corresponds to Gustard or PS Audio, their Mercury Streamer has adjustments to be compatible with other pinouts.

Is the 2.0 completely new? I think I checked their site about week ago and it wasn’t there…

Yup, it’s there now and available for pre-order for May. Check the Store tab on the links I posted, you’ll see it.

Edit: made it easier for you to find it, here you go:

Ah good to know… definitely would do the trick. If I knew of it two days ago I would’ve definitely preordered lol but now I’ll wait for reviews and I have to finish testing a few other things first

Looks like better h/w and a cleaner more purpose built board with the 5V input “mod” built in.

Yeah, this table on their homepage does a good job of showing the features of each in a comparative manner. Although I dont know jack sheep about the low jitter clocks or low noise LDO’s:

Good to see he’s keeping the price around the same too, might be about $50 more? If I wasn’t looking for the next tier option would consider picking it up as his stock goes fast and could be months before he has another run.

What are you considering next?

There was an Antipodes stack which looked really appealing :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
In all seriousness if other shit didn’t come up it was tempting with the re-clocker and psu pieces.

Top options are:

Innuos Pulse
https://innuos.com/pulse/

Lumin U2

Auralic Aries G1.1

Of course been open to suggestions, the Pi2AES has been rock solid and yeah I know I could have done the linear PSU upgrade for more performance out of it. It would have been a short term solution to a long term goal.

So im looking to upgrade my ddc for currently my only dac the exogal comet plus

I use a ddc I have all my music on my laptop and use amazon music for the time being I just want to use the AES in to improve performance over my douk u2 sdpif ddc

Holo red vs matrix x spdif 3?

Im in a single room so I dont think I would use the streamer on thd holo red for now, in fact idk how streamers work and im worried this “jack of all trades” ends up performing not that great as both a streamer and a ddc for the price… also amazon music not supported currently I might go back to tidal or try qobuz (didnt like roon) what could I even do with the streamer

Matrix x spdif 3 looks nice, but im also worried in the PSU synergy, if I go for something nice it would end costing the same as the holo… maybe its good enough USB powered? Is a 50usd PSU an improvement or Id need to go elite

Then the singxer su 6 has been popping up used lately, just like the holo red has a bunch of stuff I wont use, and the holo seems like a better ddc? Also this one includes a stock PSU

I like the 3, and I think it’s an improvement over the 2 but you would have to spend money on the psu (and possible an upgraded power cable). I do think there is an improvement with using an external psu vs bus power.
The red cost more, but you’d only need to upgrade the power cable if you chose to, and many are enjoying the red (and it also measures well).

Lots of choices to be made.

Front end question. Which one of getting a NUC for Roon ROCK in order to completely remove my PC from the chain, or adding an OptiModule+FMC to the UltraRendu would you expect to have the biggest impact to continuing to improve things overall?
