Does anyone else hear distortion at around 3:38 when listening on headphones? Not sure if it’s a clipping issue

Don’t remember the time stamp but I am very familiar with that song. There’s a part that was clipped, yes

what headphones do you use to listen to bad recordings? are they different from what you primarily use? do you also use different sources and amplification?

There is very little you can do with a really bad recording, other than grin and bear it.
It’s not like good headphones make them worse.

There are a few recordings that have excessive treble, or limited bass where a particular headphone can help, I find the 1266 can bail out a lot of mediocre classic rock material.
But to be honest if I feel like listening to something I just listen to it and don’t worry about it.

I do commonly listen to good recordings to close out a listening session where I listen to more questionable stuff.

I like some badly recorded music like old punk rock such as Misfits (Where Eagles Dare is one of my favorite songs). Some alternative and even blues music is also badly recorded.

In those cases I default to using my trusty Porta Pros. I prefer to just take a step back in resolution since I’m already sensitive in the “ear gain” region. Those genres can tend so sound ‘hot’ anyways (excessive guitars and distortion).

I’ve seen some describe Porta Pros as veiled, but I don’t find that at all (but we all hear differently). If you want more pronounced mids KSC-75’s would be a good alternative, but still be less technical than anything higher costing. You do get less bass with the 75’s.

As far as source, anything portable works. I prefer the Porta Pros with the L&P W2.

Edit:
Yaxi pads for both Koss models

  1. My LCD-5 (stock-tuning) and ZMF VC do a pretty good job with masking bad recordings with their tunings. Nighthawks were REALLY good with my cassettes/demo tapes, effectively Dolby NR wrapped up in a headphone. I wish the cans came in a more premium chassis so I could re-buy ;;.
  2. Not really, I circulate through the over-ear collection pretty evenly. I relegate most poor recordings to my v-shaped IEMs.
  3. Dynamic > Analytical stacks for clear reasons.

That’s a very surprising answer tbh
They are so detailed

Early 2000s car speakers. Only true way I can enjoy dashboard confessional or flyleaf anymore

Stock, they sound really in-my-face, so they eschew some of the quirks I would pick up in presentation or lack of separation. I find them to have relaxed treble in stock, but it does a 180 after EQ (or chain differences that bring out the top end) imo.

I didn’t know where to post this, but it looks like Adorama has taken down its listing for the HE6SE V2. Unfortunate as I was considering getting one, but I have susvaras so definitely not a need lol. Hifiman still selling them direct (but at a higher price ofc), I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if they’ll come back to adorama or not.

They do that sale frequently

Anybody here uses a protective cover for their headphones?
Like one of those stax dust covers…any link appreciated (besides the stax one)

I use these guys a lot for PC and audio gear. They will make covers to your spec. Just fill out this form. I have always got the double-sided quilted black nylon fabric.

For those who have heard most (or all) totl hps which ones are tuned neutral-bright in general (kinda like the 800s or adx5k)? Not asking for a rec, this is just for research…

I’m going to be butchered for this and it’s probably the chains I heard it with to blame but for me it’s Shang Sr lol

Does anyone else prefer brighter headphones for casual listening?

Diana TC sounded pretty bright iirc.

I don’t think that’s a controversial take lol.

I mean, are you looking for an upward tilt (genuinely lacking a bit of bass)? Or just something quite well extended? I would say most TOTL cans have quite good extension and can easily become treble focused depending on chain (sus, d8kp, mysphere, utopia) but if you want a can with inherently just little bass I think you are probably limited to adx5k or maybe mysphere 3.1 (ive only heard 3.2)

I dont think you’ll be butchered for that at all. I agree. Bringing up the bass level of shang would be my lifes goal if I bought them and IDK if its even possible for sure tbh.

I personally have some issues with treble fatigue with most cans, so I personally like a little bit darker of a can tbh. Sus’s solid extension is why ive ended up leaning twoards a more relaxed and rolled off chain tbh.

yah they are. I wouldnt call them neutral though since their brightness is more of an uneven treble than it is a bright tilt IMO.
