…to all ELAC fan+LBGT’s
I’ve had my ELAC uni B5’s in my living room for about 4 years now. Just use it for movies off a little PC. No real desire to upgrade as they do a great job for that on their own. Currently just use an old Denon integrated going to an Adcom 545ii…one point I had a BF2 and a Saga+ feeding it and it really kicked it up a notch. They scale pretty well and have decent low end for movies.
Hello,
You could also include older Elac models if you wanted to?
There are good vintage speakers that can still compete with today’s speakers.
When I have time, I’ll post my Edition one with photos from the beginning of 1990.
Like to open this topic as a very, very pleased owner of Concentro’s S507.
Some background concerning ELAC:
-They are based in Germany, Kiel (50min from Hamburg, already visited them)
-Have started 1926 with sonar technologies
-1984 they’ve started with speakers & introduced the “4Pi omnidirectional tweeter” (still available)
-they are also doing alot in the OEM space, like car manufactors
-Higher End speakers, like Concentro’s are not avaible through their international online shops (only authorized retailer)
-Nice factory tour German, enable YT translations
CONCENTRO S507
SIZE matters?
…definitely not! This little “beasts” look pretty “innocent” - current room: ~40qm
Bass is tremendous and of course, their VX-JET tweeter is well-known for details!! Soundstage is impressive, as well if you are someone listening to lower volumes. I even use them for my TV-speakers, voice & special effects are there, as you have a 5.1 setup.
EASY to place?
yes & no, I’ve mine not setuped perfectly, as much room you give them in between, they soudstage improves. Of course, you can play around a bit with their so called: stepX-JET rings you get delivered, 3 of them, neutral is for me the best for stereo triangle).
They can be closer to the wall, bass reflex is at the bottom.
EASY to drive?
No, you need some AMP-power to get full-potential. In my setup the Rotel Michi X5 has no issues at all
I’d also the opportunity to listen / compare to Concentro / Concentro M & S509 - my personal thoughts:
- S509: not worth the upgrade - fine with S507
- M: definitely you need “some room” as they need for sure some space around, not close to walls (so we are talking at least 50qm+) - not worth the jump (€21k)
- Concentro: impressive (150kg at it’s best) - €33k + you need a lot of room, far beyond 60qm. Design is not everyones taste, I also would go for a different brand in this price segment, like T+A
Would I sell them for the ‘next-Upgrade?’
No, no, no - would keep them in another spare room. I’ve heard lot’s of speakers, in much higher price range (DALI, KEF & Dynaudio in direct comparison), but if they are properly setuped, you’ll love it! No matter of genres, I listen to quite a lot, never get tired about musicality - no, they are not AN speakers, for sure different sound signature. Of course, we all know: source matters
Some impressions & sizing:
I think a lot op people wouldn’t bother with 5.1 or 7.1 systems or what have you if they got a good 2.1 system to watch movies. I mean there’s nothing like a good home theater set up for watching LOUD movies explode shit but for overall viewing 2.1 is so sweet.
Agree… i’m not a big fan of: back/left-right, front, center, unnatural bass - complete unnatural listening state for my brain . Sure, I’m the wrong person to say anything about home theatre
Yep agree - been there, done that, got the T-shirt and a bunch of old gear in the store-room
I’ll agree to a point, 2.1 will give you a decent fake center, if you can sit centrally, surrounds are hard to fake. I think 3.1 is the real sweet spot IF you can get a decent center channel, and they often aren’t great.
But 5.1 is a pain to setup, I went from 5.1 to 2.1 for convenience in my living room and wouldn’t go back, but I also wouldn’t go to 2.1 in my dedicated home theater space.
Do make jumpers of bi-wire terminals make a difference?
YES, in my case…
Replaced last week my Concentro’s original plate to Nordost Valhalla 25cm silver Jumpers and mid/high frequency even more micro details…
Anyone else have played with jumpers?
I temporarily had a neighbor’s Totem Acoustics tower and they had the cheap gold plated stamped brass plates and I replaced them with a set of Antiwire jumpers, big difference.
