Hello,
For the Singxer, I can give you the tip not to go higher than 5.0 for the driver.
5.30 sounded strange on my Su 2.
I can’t say exactly what, but it sounded less emotional to my ears, a bit more sterile and cooler.
Below 5.0 is good but has a few small bugs.
That’s why I personally found 5.0 the best so far.
Under Audirvana 3.5 it was quite clear for me.
I also went further back with the driver versions from Singxer.
My impression was that the further back you go, the warmer and unfortunately also more errors, mainly in sampling.
But it is only subtle with the warmth.
I have not fully tested this, but have only heard it, especially with Wasapi.
Under Audirvana both options sounded as follows.
Wasapi tends to be brighter, angle leans tends to be more airy and open in the midrange, overall a little less lively over time and smoother.
Under Asio, conversely, I found it mainly a little quieter and more controlled.
Warmer leaning and somewhat darker.
Bass also seemed a bit fuller under Asio than Wasapi, a bit more punchy and powerful.
There is firmware but you have to be careful, the Singxer manual is terrible.
I only referred to this when using the Singer DDC together with the PC.
I sometimes forget that others do not use a PC or laptop
One thing that I had with the singxer is that I would lose connection to it when my computer went to sleep. I could never get it to stay awake and eventually just sold it for something else. I never have that issue with my Hydra Z.
On Magnahifi there is an interesting upgrade of the Su2 with Farat power supply including conversion to it.
Unfortunately, I don’t know if the upgrade would also be feasible for Su2 owners.
The Matrix spidf 3 seems to have been updated and the spidf 2 has been discontinued.
I assume the 3 is an upgrade to the 2.
With the Holo Red, the first units seem to have been delivered and there are still various problems, also in the operation.
Results are still scarce, so it remains to be seen.
If it is not urgent, the wait might still be worthwhile.
There are differences based on descriptions from folks I trust, they’re not mayor especially at this price point. Speaking from first hand experience though, the power supply will make a BIG difference in their sound.
The advantage to the SU-6 is the fact that it does away with the power supply reliance because it uses a capacitors for power instead so potentially a cheaper solution when you factor in a power supply cost. It’s also the only one that has a temperature controlled clock, so technically the more advanced of the lot.
What you’ll be gaining in improvement especially if you’re not currently using a DDC will be potentially massive so I wouldn’t sweat too much whatever you get.
Edit to add, just noticed the Matrix is a newer better isolated unit, my vs2 worked well and did a good job isolating front end computer noise. If they have upgraded the unit I would assume it does an even better job. Personally my vote goes to the Matrix 3 for that reason alone.
Matrix and singer are very similar. I use Ifi power supply with Both so no savings there.
By a small margin the soundstage on the matrix in 2 channel in direct comparison in MY main system is a bit smaller.
In my smaller room the difference was really not easily discernible.
On HP systems I could not in all honesty distinguish between either.
The singer is a larger unit taking up more space. People will pay more for the singer used than the Matrix.
Matrix would be a better value overall as far as used units go, for a mid tier level system. I have used both and cannot push one more than the other in reference to performance I could discern.
Good luck, both have served me well🤗
What else would be a good power supply while we are talking about it, as long as you connect it to a DDC.
(Possibly even Matrix Element H card).
Just discovered the Teddy Pardo which doesn’t make a bad impression.
@Nickmimi
Sounds good what you say about the Spidf 3.
@Deleeh …It’s only an assumption but a very reasonable one at that. Layman’s common sense led me to the conclusion is all. No hands on experience with the Vs3… own and use the Matrix SPIDIF-2
Buy the best you can used. Keces Ultra series, Farad, Plixer even the Shanti, all good. There are a few boutique brands out there but you don’t have to go crazy to get a good bang for the buck. Here’s a good review
The ifi Elite series is great as well, not a LPS but it doesn’t have to be to be good. A good low noise design is a good design.
It’s a pretty much a case of what’s out there when you’re ready to buy and does it support the voltage needs you require. You’re going to get more mileage from a power supply that gets you various voltage outputs.
Oh yes I remember this post, I think you posted it somewhere, thanks for the reminder.
I read it at the time and also looked for the Paul Hyes which don’t seem to be available anymore which is a shame.
For the Matrix Element H it needs a bit more than just 5 V the specifications are 9-12VDC ≥1.2A.
I have been using this power supply for 2 years:
The Keces is just a board - I don’t have the space at the moment.
I would have to look at the rest, the question is certainly whether it is still useful to do something on the Matrix Audio (I have never seen a report that someone had tried various power supplies).
It is also the only part that runs on DC, the rest is all Class A in the chain and it is definitely quiet.
Having my Su2 converted to the Farat might be more interesting which is offered by Magnahifi probably.
@nickmimi thought you had it in use,but good to know.
Funnily enough, Matrix and Singxer are still on the market for the end of DDCs.
Even the Gustard is still struggling to get to that level it seems.
They are still switching mode supplies the key phrase on the product page is “adaptive multi-mode controller” so it’s a switching supply.
There is nothing wrong with a good SMPS implementation.
I agree with you BTW they are very good.
The heat thing is a total red herring, depends a lot on what’s in the Box and how much power is being sourced. The LPS on my Rendu gets barely warm, the rendu itself is as hot as I’d be comfortable with.
Ok copy, their literature mixes me up and i was not sure. @dB_Cooper correct in your language use. Now show us the deals on good LPS units when you stumble upon them
