Beyerdynamic DT770 / DT880 / DT990 / MM300 600 ohms

DT177x is supposed to be a little more laid back in the treble I think. However you are no longer in the xx0 range anymore for price either. I enjoyed the 770 250ohm for a while when I had it. Definitely has a bright V signature. 880 was bright but smoother and more balanced. I may pick it up again in the future to serve specific purposes, however it’s far from my normal preferred sound signatures which tend toward warm and bassy most of the time.

I have a pair of the foam pads that Beyerdynamic uses inside the pads of the Amiron headphones. They sometimes are available as replacement parts. I’ve read that these are part of the re-tuning Drop did with the 177x which is why I picked them up. Seemed like a useful thing to have in a toolkit and I am curious to try them on any pair of Beyers. I think I will get the 880s next month so I shall find out.

Such a classic move, getting a pair of headphones to take advantage of a cool pad/cable thats sitting around

used this guy for my 990s definitely did help with the treble

Thanks @Shane for selling me his 880 600 ohm for a good price. notice something with this particular pair. the plug doesn’t indicate impedance on this unit. which to me indicated a 250 ohm which is the only model that doesn’t indicate impedance. pulled out the old multimeter and immediately read out 600 ohm. so just wanted to say when in doubt I guess use your multimeter.

I had a problem with them shortly after getting them. I returned them to Europe for repair and they came back like that. I thought it was weird too, bit they seemed to work fine afterwards.

Thank you for the purchase and I am glad it got to you so quick!

I am putting up a few more pieces tomorrow. I have got to finally cut back.

Do they work OK with all your amps?

Ah that explains it thanks. They worked wonky with my liquid spark at first but found swapping adapters fixes it. Seems like the stock screw I’m adapter was bad. Otherwise works great!

I would think the spark is a nice pairing for these. It’s got the power and it has the nice warmth and should also smooth out the treble a bit. I’ve owned both, just not at the same time. I mainly used the spark with my Nighthawks and my DT770s when I had it.

It’s an excellent amp for them and from a price perspective it fits really nicely as I tend to reccomend spending more on the headphones than the amp…it sits nicely in that category. But I am finding more joy using them with the asgard

using this on the plat right now SE out. I really should have bough this headphone sooner. this pairing is kinda insane. the extra impedance and tightness is really good at keeping control and adding a feeling of tight impact that I miss on my 990’s and the plat’s inherent timbre just makes for such a solid sound.

Just got mine 2 days ago. I also like the taut control these have (without being at all
stuffy and narrow like I hear with the Senn 58x and even 6xx.) Using the Asgard 3.
No peakiness in the treble, just good detail. Still need more time w. them, but so far I
like them. Bought as a dynamic complement to my Sundaras.

Just wow, so smooth on the RNHP, finally got one to compare with my T1.2, I expected it to be a watered down version but no, it has its own charisma and traits, lovely sound and insane detail for the what was paid. Definitely a worthy compliment.

@MacDLaw Good to know, re the T1.2 I’ve had my 880 for just over 3 weeks and am liking it even more. Though it pushes my Asgard 3 to about 2:30 ( Schiit
said that should be “totally fine”) it is a nice change from the Sundara’s presentation, which has extra resonance to it. I agree with your description of
“insane detail” and would add “imaging” and “instrument separation.” It really excels at live club jazz/vocalssuch as Davis’ Kind of Blue and Emilie Claire Barlow’s Live in Tokyo.
I still prefer the Sundaras for most orchestral in general, but for the price of the
880 I am pleased, tho I may add a Loki to fill in the mid bass a bit.

Agreed, and only been 1 day but this is already a keeper, finally found a partner for my T1.2, without all the extra bass around this feels better for many genres

Back in the day I really really liked the sundaras for orchestral music, but then I met round audio technicas and grados, now sundies sound off to me :pensive:

I get it. Wish I didn’t, but I do.

A L R I G H T .

I thought why not.

Surprising to me, these little ear biscuits are worth the trouble. I’ve heard on several occasions they’re great for classical/orchestral/jazz. Few more to add to the list fellas (Potentially Lady’s & They’s)… Rock, R&B, & Soul. Not every genre, including “Gaming”… so settle down. Not MLG grade here. These are more subtle in their delivery and as such can’t give you the quick punchy delivery you need for such genres/applications. They’ll come off as shrill/sharp/crisp/sibilant. There is gold in this river dear sweet prospectors so read on.

There is something i need to get out of the way before i dribble on and on about these poor German paupers that are currently strapped to my head. They reveal too much for their own good; the quality you put in is what you get out. Period. (I can tell with the paltry setup i own. :stuck_out_tongue:)

Bass is subtle yet possess a commanding sense of presences. Punchy when it needs to be or when it is properly recorded to be so.
Mids are adequate yet not over bearing… sadly I’m not impressed here. They get the job done, pat on the back gents. Sennheiser gotcha beat.
Highs… here we go. Classic Peak. yada yada. It doesn’t bother me but, I’m fully aware of it and with time i may come to love it. Sue me. They produce a more crisp and responsive treble that can overwhelm.

Edit: Sound stage, put shortly depends on the recording. It’ll range from far and wide but i think this demonstrates the range of these headphones. Close to far-with-in-reason.

As i rotate from application to application i find these only lack in responsiveness and that, i think, this issue is genuinely is due to amp selection. (Geshelli) I’ve contacted these, unmentioned, amp producers and they’ve told me “This poor bastard has reached it’s limits for output.” So this “review, more of a critique from a previous… current lover”, concludes with… they’re fine. I like them. Maybe don’t get them if you’re expecting ALL AND EVERYTHING FOR EARS. ( :cloud_with_lightning:G.O.D. :cloud_with_lightning:)

These headphones are a fine wine that is better than you and belong in a basement someplace far away. Not because you’re not deserving rather, you may not appreciate these cantankerous little bastards… I sure didn’t at first. Yet… more power AAA power lays beyond the horizon.

Geshelli amps imo are pretty bad pairings while volume wise you might be fine. The lack of power will make the headphone less punchy and give it less control and authority. I feel you need at least twice the power to reach near full potential.

@TechnicolourDunk Welcome to the club! I’ve had mine about 6 weeks and yes, they definitely show you what’s in the recording (good and bad, lol.) I’m
using an Asgard 3 set about 2:30 and love their directness and imaging. I have others too, but these are indeed a “fine wine.” Have fun.

I do like these as stock, but I’ve been researching ways to give these a bit more body and fuller bass at times, without messing up the clarity. Thinking eq (possibly Loki) or pad swap (Dekoni elite velour?) I’d welcome any comments. Do they eq well?
TIA

considering their responsiveness with tubes I assume they eq pretty well. only thing I would be iffy on based off experience on eqing the 770 and 990 the bass region might be iffy to eq but they were admittedly lower impedance models so the bass is just naturally looser
