Beyerdynamic DT770 / DT880 / DT990 / MM300 600 ohms

You have some other options in EU, they just aren’t as widely well known. The Soekris stuff is pretty good. Metrum Acoustics, Audial, and Veridian Utopia are all EU companies. Prices at retail may be too high, but if you can find used stuff it may be an option.

Thanks for that advice. I looked at the Allo previously as it does look very interesting, but I need something that runs off Aes, Spdif or coax not usb. I use a Pi 4 with volumio via an Audiophonics DDC for my music.

Interesting, thank you. I’ll track those down and see what is out there.

Ahhhhh ok yeah that will be a deal breaker then unless you change your streamer

I don’t personally think you would be able to find a sirus dac at that price point, but you could find a used lower end metrum likely. Audial isn’t the best match for the neve imo

I still want to hear a Thrax Audio dac, but they are too expensive and extremely rare in the U.S. IIRC they are made in Bulgaria.

One option could be change your streamer to an Allo USB Signature, but that might not be worth it just for an entry DAC

Good point…forgot the RNHP was the other component. Would a Metrum Amethyst pair well?

Had a look around and my immediate impression is that a Metrum Acoustics second hand would still cost me more than I can pay. I may go back to saving up and considering a Denafrips Ares 2 next year. There is a licensed reseller in the EU now which makes it cheaper if still expensive.

Ive also seen Pro-Ject DACs being recommended they should be easier to obtain in Europe

As far as I can tell Pro-ject don’t make an R2R anymore. Under 1000 they are almost all AKM chips and to be honest I am not sure it would represent enough of a difference to my JNOG for the cost. Thank you for the suggestion though!

Not R2R, but this is a tube DAC that should be quite interesting: DAC Box RS – Pro-Ject Audio Systems

That does look an interesting dac. I know very little about Pro-ject. They get few reviews or write ups. That one would cost me more than the Ares new and only slightly less second hand. I think I shall decide on patience and saving for the Ares. I have plenty to be enjoying in the mean time and it will be something to look forward to. Thanks everyone for the tips :slightly_smiling_face:

Listening to these (DT880 600 Ohm) headphones for the last few days on a Pro iCAN. I think I am going to sell them on. With lots of juice, the sound more than fine. But not great.

Definitely a great value, but I don’t think they will ever hit my favourites list.

I love my 990’s with grey velour pads (now Dekoni’s), I think they’re very comfortable and sound good with electronic music. There are many better headphones but not for that budget. If you’re just getting started this is a good investment, once you had a taste of better, yeah, it becomes entry level.

On Beyer EU you can order customized versions these days, pretty cool.

Am considering giving DT-770’s a longer try. Last time I heard them, I wanted to run far into the distance, mainly because I have a problem with overpresented treble.

In other words: Requesting guidance in the DT-xx0 question.

If the treble tuning is what sent you running then all I can say is no amount of pad rolling or pairings with electronics changed that for me. If you need closed back but don’t like the highs I’d go a different route personally.

I found the 250 ohm smoother up top (but still very much a bright signature) than the 80 ohm but there is some unit variance regarding bass. Some say 80 is better or more but some say 250 so ymmv.

Dt880 600 ohm is much more agreeable if you can live with an open back. Still bright but much refined about it.

I am not sure I want any Beyerdynamic headphone, just feels odd to not have a DT-something arround.

This gets my vote

Mine too. Idk if I’m going deaf but I have always been treble sensitive but I have thoroughly enjoyed the Dt 880 600ohm version. This is coming from Aiwa, sony, various dj phones and my last pair before they crapped out on me some years ago was the V-moda M100’s when they were new. Been curious about the T1 2nd gen thanks to the 880’s.
