Can be, you’d be surprised on how well Maggies take to tubes as well, it’s really more quality than quantity dependant (to an extent, you aren’t going to make some of the under 20 watt work no matter the quality)
This. From all the research i did Maggies respond well to current and high dampening factors. That usually comes with higher wattage and better quality amplification, but not 100% just all big power dependant.
ok so I have my dac on like +10db and the 13r on v2 and maxed out but the susvara still sounds low lol. what am i doing wrong?
Do you have any digital volume in play? I’d check to make sure all digital volume is maxed as well
Just my dac at +10db
Never crossed the 12 o’clock with the Enleum it’s impossible that it is set up correctly.
Try and set the gain level again and see if that helps. The Enleum had a thing where it wouldn’t treat the gain setting as high sometimes.
That was my first thought, perhaps it’s not
maybe you actually have them hooked up to V1?
Wait wait wait
If it’s like the Enleum than what you’re seeing is the input but the gain settings requires going into the “menu” and setting it up and then once set it goes back to showing input
Gain settings affect both inputs
It’s like what turn it off, then hold the vol for some time and it starts blinking, and then you can choose the gain iirc. First 2 led mean low, last 2 mean high, then you just wait and it should time out on the correct setting
The manual says that both the V2 and SL lights are supposed to be on but I can only get the v2 light on alone. I tried with the remote and knob, no luck.
So during normal operation that’s correct, but it’s talking about when you put it into high gain mode at first. Don’t remember that light being on during normal operation. So turn the unit off. Then hold in the volume knob until the lights start flashing. Then turn the knob so both the V2 and SL light are lit and flashing, then just wait until they turn off again. Turn the unit on again and it should be in high gain (there’s no light to symbolize high gain during normal usage)
Make sure to lower dac volume and unit volume so you don’t blow anything
Edit: moved to bakoon thread for relevancy
Yeah, it’s a bit tricky and I don’t remember the remote working for gain. If I recall…From off you need to hold down the power button until it starts up. Then you will see the indicator lights flashing. You can change them by moving the knob left to right.
Your choices are (where * is a flashing light and 0 is unlit)
0 0 and ***
You want to choose 0**, where V2 and SL are flashing. NOT where all three are flashing.
Then sit tight and wait. Don’t press anything. Once everything stops flashing your gain selection has been made and you can start the amp in high gain mode.
Does that make any sense at all?
does it matter which rca input I use? I connected it to the inner ones
I don’t think so.
Oh man. I was using asterisks to denote lit led’s and they just bolded the asterisks, lol.
You get the idea. M0N explained it better anyway.
I watched Goldensound’s review of the 23r and although it wasn’t a bad review, he seemed generally disappointed in it. He said it was a warm sound but was lacking in mid texture.
This was an amp that I was interested in trying, and given the hype that greeted the 13r and 23r when they came out, I was surprised.
I know that a few of you owned an Enleum/Bakoon but I think you’ve all sold yours? What did you think?
I’ve had the hpa21 and the hpa01 and 01m in the past (albeit the last 2 for less time), and really it’s just a super specialist amp that’s only worthwhile for the current drive. It’s fantastic with a select few headphones as it provides an experience that’s genuinely hard to get with other amps, but the voltage drive is lackluster and current drive is only a hit with a select few, so I ended up selling mine when I stopped wanting to focus on those select few headphones.
I haven’t watched the review yet, but I have yet to hear if the new one is more in line with a 13r or 23r or the old 01 and 21. If it sounds like the 01 or 21 I can very well see why someone would be disappointed if they bought one expecting a 13/23r because they aren’t really similar.
I actually miss the 21 as it’s the most technical and capable out of the bunch, something that I wish the 01 amps could match. I just think they’re amps that are super niche, pairing dependant in both hp and source, and have a very specific sound that not everyone is going to find worthwhile
These days I basically run a mass kobo 424 and woo wa8 eclipse as my portable amps, and with my current headphones they mostly fill the role I’m looking to use portable so I didn’t feel the need to keep around the bakoon (if I still had an hd800 I’d definitely still own one though), but having a more powerful warmer portable amp to drive planar I guess is something that wouldn’t hurt to have again lol
Thought this was a continuation of the bakoon portable discussion in the general thread, misread lol
Really I liked the 13r quite a lot, haven’t heard the 23r, but I sold mine because I wasn’t using it as much when I got some higher tier amps in, so it just couldn’t keep up. If they made some higher end versions I’d probably be compelled to pick one up again. Otherwise I didn’t have any real qualms at the price point assuming pairing was good for what it did
I’m glad you didn’t delete your comments completely since they were still interesting to read LOL.
Based on your experience with the 13r, what kind of headphones did it work best (or worst) with?
Thought it’s a fantastic match for hifiman, a solid match for abyss, audeze, focal (sometimes although I think you can do a lot better in this range if that’s your goal)
Things that I wasn’t so impressed with was with final, audio technica, senn, zmf, mysphere, and grado
I really think this amp is only worthwhile with hifiman and abyss stuff, otherwise there’s probably better value options out there. It is a great speaker amp though and I honestly think it suits a wider range of speakers than it does headphones. Apparently the 23r works better with a wider range of stuff to an extent but I can’t confirm since I’ve not heard it, only the 13r. Felt very purpose built/tailored to the susvara and 1266/diana
Dac wise I find myself gravitating toward sources like bricasti m1 or m5 (neutral and great control and energy), rockna wl or wd (great space and energy with some sweetness), lampi pacific and baltic (although I’ve not heard the pairup with the baltic directly I feel confident in suggsting it, space, richness, dynamics), aqua la voce s3 (a more relaxed approach without sacrificing texture), Berkeley stuff (shifting it a bit more toward aggressive in a good way), and totaldac direct setup (awesome all around while keeping warmer smoother lean). Exogal comet plus, weiss 501, and mola mola tambaqui was also pretty good.
On the more miss side of things for me, holo stuff, chord (where I think both of those colorations clash too much with the bakoon and ended up sounding gross one way or another), audio note (way too smooth), emm (same as the first 2 but lesser extent), borderpatrol (actually disgusting), denafrips (had energy but sounded very off), lampi gg2 (too rich, but the more balanced sounding lampi work well), yggy a2 (a bit off-putting), mhdt stuff (too sloppy)
I can see how one might be disappointed with it with the wrong chain or if you’re after the most fast and clean and tight sounding amp, the 13r was very much about being warmer, smooth, liquid, and a bit looser with some bloom and sweetness without losing much technical performance, but I only thought it really achieved that balance with the susvara and 1266 with right dac selection, a lot of other pairings just didn’t do it for me considering price and alternatives. I’d absolutely still suggest it to someone in the market for those cans as it makes a lot of sense there, but otherwise idk
