I imagine the MZ3 should do nicely with the ADX5000
I’m glad to hear it
Do you have the ADX5000? Or did, at some point?
I’d like to try one at some point, but no. I did have an MZ2 a while back. I do think I recall someone around here mentioning solid synergy at some point, though.
Oh nice.
They certainly have some specialist qualities that make them worth a try.
Got the Audio Technica ATH-W1000 in today!
They’re pretty, though I did delude myself into thinking they’d be actually made out of wood - nope, just plastic.
Edit: As @MazeFrame kindly pointed out, it is actually wood! If someone is interested seeing the insides of the hp, I posted pictures in a post below.
I’m also lucky that the winged headband design fits me well! @MacDLaw warned me that this is a somewhat controversial fit that many have had issues with, but apparently I’m blessed with a big head!
First rough impression is I like them. They bring forward background sounds which I appreciate; I most love hearing new details from my favorite songs. Guitars also sound very nice. AT has a thing for instruments it seems.
The acoustic version of Fair Play by Malaki has been my favorite song with them so far. The breathing at the beginning is emphasized, and the guitar comes in later with a nice ring.
On the downside, I don’t think voices shine as much as they could. They seem a bit veiled/recessed.
Been testing them with my Vio 281. Tomorrow I’ll switch to the Little Labs Monotor as I believe there might be some synergy there (possibly bringing voices more forward). Though I do fear they might get too bright, as they’re already hovering on my comfort limit at times on the Vio.
Certainly am a fan of the AT sound. Ultimately, not sure if the W1000 can hold themselves as a main-stay in my collection, considering I have the ADX5000 which is better (to me) in almost every way.
Would love to hear anyone else’s thoughts if they have the W1000 or other AT headphones
Wait really? Not wood?
RIGHT? It’s so disappointing
Awww man that’s sad for sure! Shame shame audio technica
Question btw! You mentioned this closed back has vocals slightly recessed, but I assume that’s not the case for the ADX5000 Right?
No! To my ears the standout feature of the ADX5000 are the instruments, for sure. But the vocals don’t pale in comparison.
Just a brief update: trying the W1000 now with the Little Labs Monotor. And I was right! Voices are much better today. Timbre of the W1000 (and neither is the Monotor) isn’t great so my guess it takes a mid-forward amp with good timbre to balance them out and bring out the best in them.
Standout feature is still that they emphasize slight background noises. Soft strings seem to ring longer, voices become breathier, background singers and other little accentuations of the song (eg. instruments coming in for just a couple of seconds) step forward and become more noticeable. I love that and they might actually have a chance staying in my collection after today’s impression
I love when i find a specific trait that a piece of equipment has or performs well in, i will keep things just because they can be great in one area and then use them based on that attribute good for you, congratulations and enjoy!
Thank you! I’m also very happy. I would never have found these without the people here, especially @MacDLaw of course
Would love to hear some things you’ve kept and what they excelled in
Had a pair in hand in store once, and that was definitely wood.
I have a single HP that has no redeeming audio qualities and that is an old monoprice M560. I tried what i could with pad swaps to fix that HP but i simply disliked its sibilant nature. I keep the HP because it has a most comfortable headband and someday i want to swap it on my He6se.
The AWKT for example does stringed instruments much justice. The AWAS is a dream w/ blues. Auteur are best general purpose, HD800S has lovely detail, HD600 does vocals in a way i enjoy, GH50 i enjoy across various genre’s, my Grado’s are favorites for my jazz, blues. and so many instrumental styles of music. —-Nighthawks, Sivga006, M40X and He6se are my go to HP’s for EDM, club, rap, techno etc. anything bass heavy in that style of genre. —-Audeze have great sound across so many various genre’s when mated w/ proper amplifiers. I have a HP or 2 which are simply easy to travel w/ and play off a phone, There is a Fisher M12s i remember I enjoyed very specifically for its nice upper end.
With HP’s I’m fairly easy going, as long as they aren’t sibilant i don’t think there is a pair I can’t find some way to enjoy. Happy Listening and congratulations on the new HP’s.
TLDR: Yep, it’s wood.
You’re an absolute star. I did read this in the middle of the night when I randomly woke up and was somewhat concerned.
I brought them to my dad, resident expert on materials, this morning and took them apart with him. And yep, it’s definitely wood. Credit to AT I suppose, since I would have put my hand in fire for it being plastic - you really can’t tell from the look and sound when you tap on it. So thank you for saying it, edited my impression post.
Oh nice, good idea.
So glad to hear Yeah, I also keep my Nighthawks around for the occasional listening session. Most headphones bring something unique with them and are worth trying out at the very least.
The AWKT is also interesting to me, but the way @MacDLaw described the WP900 especially intrigues me. Have you heard those?
Certainly can’t go wrong with AT for me, I think. I’m holding off on buying anything else, though, right now (which is so hard ). I’ll wait for my MZ3 to arrive.
Thank you
Heat conductivity (or lack there of) between wood and plastic is similar, and with polyeurothane-based finish on wood, it is kind of a hard plastic surface.
For anyone who has had or heard both, is the ADX-5000 worth considering since I already have Mysphere 3.2, assuming quality source for both?
I’d also be curious in a comparison between the two. I believe @Zaphain has both sets, so maybe he can leave some impressions
Hello again! I finally got a pair of ADX5000, and after a month of use, I can say that this is the best purchase in audio in a long time. These cans are absolutely incredible, very lightweight and comfortable, very natural and effortlessly organic sounding, thanks to the incredible resolution. No excessive brightness or shrillness whatsoever. I like the openness and depth of the sound stage and sound images. There is a lot of air, which I met only in HE-6 and Stax SR-009. The bass after the HD660s also surprised me with its depth and impact.
Now I use them with a bit modified Singxer SDA-2 DAC (AK4497), and still with AT-HA22TUBE amp. I changed the Atlas Element Integra RCA interconnects to Superior version, with them the sound is fuller, the images are little wider and smoother on trebles (with HD660s it was not quite suitable). And I also tried to change the stock JJ tubes to Hewlett Packard Amperex ECC88 (same as Bugle Boy), with them I also got an interesting sound - more focused, energetic and with slightly higher resolution, yet very natural (maybe a bit tamed in treble though).
To be honest, I’m so pleased with the sound right now that I even wondered if it’s worth changing anything else. Everything sounds good, including energetic and overloaded music or tracks in poor quality. Live recordings and acoustic instruments sound especially good. Of course, if a good offer for an OTL amp comes up, then it will still be interesting to try, because I’ve never owned a pure tube amp before.
Thanks again for all the advice you gave on hihiguides earlier!
Sweet sweet, glad you’re enjoying them, also pretty cool setup Out of curiosity what mods are done to the Singxer dac? Haven’t really seen anyone mod one of those before
Interesting
Good place to be
Npnp, glad you are enjoying the cans
