Yes the weird ortho bump they have. Basically all fazored Audeze have these. The 3pf are more forward there too but its not the same extent. Its a reason why the 2pf stays in the rotation and I was lucky to find some of their OG suede earpads unused. Havent found much like it, and i may not again.
The pads have varied quite a bit, which hasn’t helped their [Audeze’s] cause with frequency response. When they revised the pads from memory foam a while back I bought a new pair for my X which greatly evened out the midrange, but the kicker is that that set of pads was still thicker than the ones on my 24’s, which are soft and comfy. No idea when or why or what they’re doing with their pads, but the peak thing is true and something that can use some taming, my 2PF’s I’ve since sold had shout in the same region as the 24 till I did various tube and cable swaps, the Yggy knocked out the rest of it
Here’s some terrible pics:
Sorry about the awful quality, the rear end difference in thickness of these badonkadonks is more apparent in person, lol
The pads vary because the ones on the left (bottom) appear to be the protein leather pads. The ones on the right (top) appear to be the lambskin leather pads. Based on the 2nd picture of your post.
It could just be the picture though. But to my eyes, that is what it looks like.
It does look like that, I agree, but they’re both leather pad sets
Thanks for the clarification. As far as I know, there was a revision to the leather pads around 2016/2017. The leather pads previous to that were much softer, but also bigger/wider. They didn’t use slow rebound memory foam in those older pads as well.
Then there was the pad change that happened about a year or so ago. The differences were much less drastic (supposedly), but I haven’t been able to confirm for myself as of yet.
I renewed the OG pads on my Prefazor 2.2 with 2021/22 Audeze pads and… don’t like it very much. Extension, soundstage and resolution lacking imo. I don’t want to sound like a spoiled baby but it does sound a bit overly smooth as M0n described it. I guess I could try Dekoni Suede or other pads before giving up on it, would need to know how the sound changes first though, don’t wanna blindly spend more money on them tbh. Crin’s measurements suggest that the Velours might sound a little more even than the Sheepkin, but not by a lot. I may not have the best fitting amps, but compared to something like the HE-500, which shouldn’t be much easier to drive, it does sound a little “sleepy”, but maybe that’s the appeal.
I lucked out and got an unused set of the Audeze original suede pads that they discontinued because they got butt hurt people used them for other cans. If you can find those i think its the best option.
In the middle of cleaning up my LCD-5 and I noticed these angled striations/wrinkles on the top and bottom of the right driver. This shows up to a lesser extent on the left side as well. From what I gather, it seems like wrinkles are generally normal, but I’m just wondering from other owners, should this be a cause for concern? I’m not hearing anything different, but they weren’t there before.
Contact Audeze especially as this may fall under warranty.
They got back to me saying that the wrinkles were normal, which seems to corroborate with my other findings. I’ll take their word for it, but if there’s any driver failure, hopefully it occurs within the three-year warranty period.
Got to say, the Lcd24 plays nicely with the Aic10’s bass, midrange, grandness, weight, and tactility. The treble of the 24 through this amp is so smooth and tasteful compared to what I heard before being kind of grainy and uneven sometimes.
Also it clearly surpassed the LcdX in technicalities compared to the close call of my previous amps.
Synergy wise it sounds more at home than the D8kpLE with this amp. Also plays better with this sound profile than it did with V550 and Rnhp (discarding technicalities).
Now I’m looking for a clean 3.5mm Susvara and hope the tactile and weighty sound is preserved.
I meant to respond to this before but I’ve been super busy! I’ve found the Liquid Crimson plays that way for me with the LCD-24 and had similar experiences as you describe when compared to the Neve and LCD-X’s (which are still my go to daily pairing for the most part). I’d love to hear an AIC-10, and terrified of how much I’d like it! Ha! One day! Thanks for sharing!
Will be selling an LCD-X 21 supremely clean w/all accessories. PM me if interested because I was just going to post on Head-Fi since it will get a lot of eyeballs there.
Checking here on the off chance someone’s got a pair of clean Audeze LCD leather (or lamb) pads? OE or Dekoni they’ve got sitting around you want to sell.
@dB_Cooper Remind me to check the closet i keep HP pads in, i’ve got whole rack and may have something useable for you
Maybe…i cant remember…call me
Sorry brother, I only have one old beat up set, I used the new pads on my own HP’s. I did find some totally cool pieces I completely forgot I owned though ![]()
