Active preamp shootout

Somedays i really, really dislike this hobby and absolutely abhor how much it costs to play w/ the big boys :rage:

I am going through this thread line by wicked line, thank you M0N for all your efforts in giving us feedback on Active pre-amplifiers.

There is a big show coming up in the DC area and in my mind at least, I will be using every bit of information gleaned to look at equipment w/ a more open mind and hopefully be a bit better educated about how pieces work together to find the beautiful synergy i know can be had :pinched_fingers:

I mean, I haven’t really said anything of substance yet lol, but thanks. Still working on it, I’ve just been very tired of anything audio related lately and have just been enjoying my setups instead of working on anything, I promise it’ll get done eventually, but I just have negative desire to write about anything audio related as of late

Will be curious on your show thoughts and what ends up being a hit or miss there :+1:

The Canadian dealer has 2 ~$1M systems in her home, it’s actually a really good watch, and her take is the preamp is the most important part of any system.

You tube apparently let me share the ad I front of it.

I have been playing around minimizing my chains and using the least amount of attenuation where possible and avoiding digital volume controls completely just to see how things perform and what I enjoy or dislike along the way.

I know you have not written detailed info here like the DAC thread BUT, i take all your words and try to burn as much info into my head as possible so that when i DO run across new to me gear i can sift through my mental notes and do a better job auditioning pieces i currently can’t afford anyway  :joy:

I just wouldn’t really take anything here yet as some sort of verdict or anything since all I’ve pretty much done is note what I’ve been working on and the systems and whatnot. If you want, I can spoil what would be the article with just what I like most out of what I’ve tried and stuff, but really I haven’t gotten into the meat of things, just lots of listening and notes that I’ve not really gone though and made usable

Good for you man!

I’m actually hoping you take your time because I’d rather not jump into buying anything soon but I’ve decided the next upgrade for me will more than likely be splitting my LTA UL+ into a pre and amp section. Components TBD but I know I’ll decide on a preamp first.

It’s been a while but do you have the LTA pre on your roster? I’ve also been doing a lot of reading on the Backert site.

Don’t know what you mean by LAT pre? Do you mean the CJ GAT? or CAT SL1?

Derp, LTA I mean.

I have one in house lol, it’s nice. See the second post in the thread for the official opening and everything how I’m going to go about things

FWIW I really enjoyed the YG Acoustics room at CAF that had the Vinnie Rossi Brama preamp and power amp. Both were just gorgeous and there was something about the meters…they just had a different personality than normal VU meters.

This may sound silly, so I apologize in advance, but I asked them to play a song I’m pretty familiar with and I swear I was able to almost visualize the lead singer/guitarist from the audio.

Vinnie makes really nice stuff and that room was set up pretty decently if you sat in the center and back a row or 2, I’m biased towards Vinnie Rossi equipment but your ears were proof positive :+1:

Some preamp pron here from CAF. I just love the way this thing is put together. The lid itself weighed at least 15 lbs.

No idea how this sounds, no idea of the cost but just… look at it!

It’s a truly excellent preamp lol, been around for awhile, worth hearing one if you can. I almost grabbed one for the comparison but couldn’t find one that was simple to get lol

I’m very saddened by the temporary :crossed_fingers: loss/step-away of our community’s golden eared sound savant and I will not utter his name so that he may take the well deserved break away from audio and our pestering questions he desires.

Since the sound signature changes are fresh in my mind I would like to document the small changes I noticed between the Goldpoint SA4 passive stepped attenuator and a PASS HPA-1, HP amp being used as an active preamplifier in my smaller test-bed system.

Power for the front end comes from PassLabs upgraded outlet @ the wall receptacle, Furman Elite 15 power conditioner, Uptone audio Fiber to Ethernet converter w/ Sbooster power supply.
Cables are a mixed concoction ranging in cost from $100ish to $375ish MSRP ea. basic upgrades IMO.

Front end streaming service is either ROON or Innuos Sense software using Quoboz and Tidal. My personal preference for a very small Sound Quality performance win is the Innuos Sense software BUT the ROON is a superior music finder so I switch to it more often than not passing on the small SQ gain the Innuos offers to my ears/senses.

My aging but very solid streamer is an Innuos Zenith MK3 feeding one of the very last Lampizator Baltic 3 DACs produced before the change to the B4. The USB cable needed for the Innuos is and will always be an FTA Callisto, my favorite pairing between the 2 units for the best Sound Quality and performance IMHO. (I have tried multiple DDC’s in the past and my preference for the grandest soundstage performance repeatedly is direct USB feed via the FTA Callisto :man_shrugging:. I am sure there are BNC or AES and DDC combos that others find wonderful but for now I’m done experimenting and searching them out)

Amplification is a pair of older Alan Eaton 45 mono blocks and speakers used are older Spatial Audio M4, triode masters along w/ a baby REL sub.

I liked using the Goldpoint passive attenuator and if ever need be I would consider their products, this unit was a loaner and I was excited to try it for a few weeks. The Goldpoint did NOT offer much if any color, weight, or significant and noticeable change to the SQ
once added in line. Over the past few weeks I pulled it in and out of line and was able to compare it somewhat easily to the amplifiers playing direct off the DAC.

My preference for ease of use was absolutely to add the passive attenuator and use the knobs on the amplifiers to adjust gain. This allowed me to finely tune the image between the 2 speakers best, It also allows me to adjust the gain on the amplifiers so that clipping and distortion at the maximum volume I enjoy is never an issue. Since the Goldpoint SA4 did not seem to affect the musical sound output much one way or another I had no qualms or issues with it and nothing negative to report. I used matching Cardas RCA cables to reduce any variables mismatched cables might make. it was a pleasant experience to use a passive attenuator that basically maintained a neutral sound character in the system, I prefer to have a remote for fiddling with the volume while I listen but ROON offers the nice DSP feature of the ability to allow the software to match the volume between various tracks and albums and I decided to try that out too which worked well for me. Solid worthwhile experience across the board. :+1:

In the past I have recommended the PASS HPA-1 as a nice dual use unit, it makes for a solid HP amplifier but also works well as a pre-amplifier and I stick to my recommendation w/ one update. The PASS unit brought out just a touch of very pleasant warmth along with enhancing the already exceptional weight the Alan Eaton 45’s normally exhibit. :pinched_fingers: The PASS unit was NOT as neutral as the Goldpoint passive unit, it was by no means “hard colored”, and I had to use a variety of tracks and spend considerable time going back to listen to make sure I was capturing the sensations correctly. I could not catch much character change beyond the added bit of sweetness and warmth in the midrange and upper bass regions of the musical output. The sense of space, detail, etc. was not altered any that I could tell in my set-up and it maintained the excellent characteristics that are currently present. :muscle: Dollar for dollar the only feature lacking is a remote, the PASS HPA-1 allowing for dual use in a system is a great value that will require heavy sums of money spent to beat, possibly thousands more to get any appreciable upgrade beyond what it can provide for systems relative to price points. It would not necessarily be my first choice if the speakers or amps I were using were in excess of $20k units but honestly for many scenarios of the type an average HP and 2 channel enthusiast finds themselves in the PASS HPA-1 really does offer very solid value relative to funds invested :pinched_fingers:

I hope to see more write-ups of pre-amplifiers in this thread if possible, comparisons based on your experiences, pictures and general knowledge and experience gained with units for use as reference by folks looking to vary their own equipment. Happy listening all :hugs:

Gratuitous pictures included for reference and your viewing pleasure

I continue to use my Pass HPA1 as double duty like you – great SS amp when I don’t feel like firing up tubes (or just feel like listening to the Pass for it’s own sake) and as a preamp into a Pendant SE. I did a few tests and preferred the Pass as preamp vs using the Pendant alone. Interesting in a way considering the added circuitry and interconnects, but using the Pass, sound is cleaner and more engaging. Win win

@tunahulk , i too continue to use a Pendant amplifier as a regular tube based option for listening to HP’s albeit my actual hours of use on the amp are very few compared to most folks on this site, simply due to my general indifference and need to use HP’s since 2 channel is my “go-to” for 90% of my listening pleasure.

Having said this i own one of the original Amp&Sound Pendants Justin used to sell his talents to Zach before ZMF took them on as a preferred manufacturer for amps back in the day.

It’s a temperamental unit which has strong preferences on location relative to other equipment around it, it is fairly tube-roll picky and lastly the volume knob has a fairly small window of use between 6 o’clock and noon-ish position dependent on HP sensitivity. I put up with all this because i actually really enjoy the power output, Sound Quality along w/ the sound character immensely and still have many many combinations of tubes yet to be experimented w/ and experienced….

Over the years, I too have found my personal preference is to use a pre-amplifier w/ the Pendant. My choice more often than not has been an older SPL PhonitorX for it’s fairly neutral character and very good gain match. Nothing particularly special here but using the pre allows me to set the volume/gain of the Pendant at 12 o’clock which allows for more power than required for all my HP’s YET minimizes any tube induced noise the Pendant puts out so that i maximize background quiet to allow for best space and instrument separation in the music possible w/ this combo.

Thank you for mentioning your own experiences and preferences, happy listening always :+1:

The Pendant is a great amp, especially for the price. Lots of power, sounds really good, fairly compact, built very well and not a lot of tubes to deal with – and the ones it does use aren’t that hard to find and reasonably priced, even NOS ones. I do miss 2 channel though. Current situation doesn’t allow for a full stereo setup so it’s headphones or nothing for me. If/when that changes I will get back into speaker listening without a second thought. Can’t beat music in a room!

Cool cool and you too!

@Christof I came across another pre-amp with conversion, and input volume adjustment similar to the Benchmark, from one of your favorite brands too!

Obviously pricey, saw one used listing for $8.5k
