I have contemplated it but since I just purchased a new to me DAC. I will wait a bit before jumping.
I own a superconductor cable for my Diana V2 and while I like the sound of it quite a bit, I do think they’re overpriced and I had to wait a while for the specific length/termination to show up on the used market. Your mileage may vary!
A buddy up North let me borrow these for a bit, they are not what I was expecting in the most positive manner.
Initial rambling thoughts:
- Takes some time to fiddle with to get the right fit, at times frustrating, yet worth the effort
- Lighter on the head than expected, yet don’t start head banging or they will become a projectile
- Bass is its calling card if you want it, or slight angle change and it becomes more balanced
- Feed it EDM, it needs to eat to be happy
- Seal is not your friend, but loose hips are
- Can play off more amps than a Suspuss
- Wish the 10 year warranty was transferable
Diana 2 quick thoughts… (LTA MZ2+Amber 3)
- a bit too mid forward with some recordings (Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper, Zoe Rahman - Color of Sound)
- nice complement to DCA Noire (more physicality, less tuned for acoustic due to treble roll off)
- treble a bit subdued, cymbals don’t sound right
- was this headphone designed with metal in mind? Finally a HP that can handle fast drum hits / riffs (speed, oomph)
- feels like a mix between detail focused (mids), non-fatiguing (treble) and engaging (physicality)
- starting to notice a ceiling with lesser recordings in terms of extracted info
- nice guitar crunch and texture, not quite like Grado Hemp, a little less special sounding
- trying to figure out what they roll best with…
Jeff Beck - Wired
Dream Theater - Awake - a tricky one with the rhythm changes
Dream Theater - Train of Thought - nice bass drum, lower tuned guitars / more bass presence in the recording this time, I think Diana 2 tends to favor the heavier stuff
Has anyone here heard or compared the MR to the V2?
The more time I spend with the 1266 the more I am digging it, my friend had an older pair of pads he sent along. They were a bit beat, as in the leather was coming off the inner circle frame, they were good 3/4" thicker than the pads I have been using them with.
He said they are the latest pads from Abyss, anyone able to explain what these thicker pads are, and why the change to the new thinner pads?
Or if anyone knows a good resource to help be better understand the 1266 evolution that would be great too.
Thanks
@Draaly might have
Ive heard both but infortunately didnt compair directly. Overall mr feels like a pretty direct uogradr to the V2 though
Listened to the MR (leather bass ported pads), Utopia 22, and D8KP LE off the Mj3 today. I personally don’t think this is the best amp for the Utopia but still waiting on my tube amp atm so it’ll do.
MR is the warmest of the bunch. It has more bass bloom than the others but I would say the D8KP has more detail in the bass. MR can still hit hard in the bass too tho and I’m not saying it’s muddy, it’s just thicker in the bass at times.
Utopia hits hard in the bass and goes decently low for a dynamic but it’s obviously not going as low as the planars. It does have good texture throughout the bass. I think the Utopia and D8KP just nudge out the MR in clarity overall throughout the FR. I think they both do a better job of layering and separation but the MR is still enjoyable. This isn’t bashing the MR, I like it and it’s staying, but just giving some impressions. Utopia and D8KP pull out a tad bit more details as well. The MR is that chill headphone you reach for. Not saying the D8KP or Utopia are too analytical but the MR is smoother and its warmth helps. Utopia and D8KP have more air. Both have a bigger stage than the MR but this doesn’t bother me. Timbre is solid on all of them. I don’t have any complaints.
They all three can live in a collection.
MR is a nice change up to these and it’s really good off the mojo2 and it’ll be my main, mobile, around the house headphone when I don’t want to be at my main chain. And I also think it’s a great headphone to use while working and you want a smooth, enjoyable, but still engaging headphone.
Sounds like Abyss really nailed this one.
Thanks for the impressions/comparisons.
I’m really enjoying MR so far. It’s balanced enough that you can really enjoy listening to it while not really caring it’s far from perfect.
@Rhodey did you try other pads? I really like the suede non ported one I have here. Can’t really imagine wanting more bass out of it without disrupting the tuning which would explain how it sounds so warm from your description.
There’s a good chance I’ll switch my Utopia for a MR. I think Utopia scales higher and is still the better headphone if you have the right amp for it. MR seems more forgiving though and I don’t plan doubling down on a dedicated Utopia chain. Won’t decide before I try all of them on 465.
MR on the Woo Tube Mini is a legit high performing chain and for at the desk listening and more casual stuff it’s really competitive. This might allow me to move my main system from my desk which is a huge plus. I wouldn’t be able to do that with a Utopia and get fully satisfied with the sound
Glad you’re liking it.
I haven’t tried other pads, just the stock leather and bass ported leather. The bass ported adds just a bit more sub bass but doesn’t bleed too much into the mids or anything. It doesn’t warm it up too much to my ears. I felt the ported pads did that more to the V2 than these.
And when I say they’re warmer, I mean in comparison to the Utopia and D8KP LE. Overall they’re not too warm. And when I’m using them and not A/Bing with the headphones mentioned above, I don’t really notice them being too warm. I would say the LCD 2 is warmer.
I would like to try the suedes. But I think I’d still go bass ported suede lol.
That’s awesome it works well with the tube mini. I’ve thought about picking one up but really enjoy the mojo2 with it so haven’t been too concerned. But maybe I’ll eventually pull the trigger. But yes, it’s really enjoyable, even off portable gear.
I wouldn’t say they’re super easy to drive tho. The D8KP takes a little less vol off the MJ3, so if you’re using something portable it’ll still need some juice, but nothing crazy.
Nice thanks for sharing some impressions.
Tube Mini on 20% volume is more than enough (from the balanced 4.4 output). This gadget is really great. I don’t have much context to compare to other dongles or DAPs and it has its faults but it’s definitely something I’ll pick up at some point.
I have a trade offer for my D8kp for a 1266 TC.
Can DNA or mj3 properly drive it? And I probably wouldn’t keep it, Just something to try out. And do you think I could get 3.5 K out of it If I decided to sell?
It’s easier to drive than the Susvara, and the DNA is OK though not great with it.
I’m fairly certain the MJ3 will be plenty, though I’m sure there are better amps for it.
OK cool. Yeah, I was thinking the MJ would be ok.
I think if I sold it, I would be able to get 3.5ish? Hopefully lol
Easier to sell than a D8KP LE that’s for sure, your $3500 asking price for the LE is above market price these days
Oof I know
Well he ended up saying he was in Israel, so that ended it.
International trades are a pain
