On topic? And here I thought mentioning an inevitable part of our lives (and millions of others lives) would be received well by all, as everyone is living through the same pandemic and experiencing the same stresses, hifi or no hifi. My mistake, I guess. I’ll keep the “rules” in mind in the future, if I choose to share anything from my life here again. Peace.
Sharing is fine and never discouraged here, there’s a thread somewhere for it, we simply try to keep the threads somewhat when possible within the confines of the topic. Nobody’s upset, that was simply a polite nudge🤗
Life is too short to take things personally and now you know. We’ve all got something in common now, we’ve lived/living through a moment of human history. We can hope we come out the other end having learned something.
Despite not spending a lot of cash, I’ve managed to change the sound of my 2 Ch system for the better simply by revisiting a lot of the basic best practice areas.
True, but this intensely personal and Im taking it the way I mean to, and Im not in the habit of sharing superficial parts of myself in social spaces where those other important parts are not welcome. I understand the rules entirely, but thought I was among “friends” who might want to know. This isnt something that’s over, or will be over any time soon, and my family is one of the millions who are getting the business end of all of it. In many places, we are told people dont want to hear about it… and that if we are vulnerable we should just not go out, lol. Im sort of exhausted from all of it, and I have ZERO patience left. If it comes across as me being short tempered, well… it is because I am. Not sure how to live like this.
Apologies – Ill stay on the hifi subject in future comments.
I’d really love to hear your feedback on this one (if you do decide to pick one up).
It’s been on my radar for some time.
Thanks.
I hear you, have I got the topic for you.

I cant wait to grab the 1ZM2, yeah. I really want to A/B test it against the WM1AM2. By now, crutchfield should really send me units to demo, after all the $$ we’ve spent there in the last few years lol.
Might as well provide my own updates since a lot has changed.
- Soekris 2541 → Enleum AMP-13R is excellent synergistically, and I don’t think I’ll be looking at any other desktop equipment until I have more space to work with.
- I got rid of the D8KP since I considered it more of a specialist headphone with its presentation, but I’d be interested in the LE or future iteration with similar tuning down the road. The VC might be a holdover for an African Blackwood Caldera Closed, but I think that’ll be way off in the future, so I’ll have plenty of time with it. Also, can’t predict the tuning anyway
. Keeping an eye on the Hifiman Audivina, Atrium Closed, and other closed-back options to see how they stack up with my current closed cans.
- Still attempting to sell my other Chifi IEMs, but I’ve only got trade requests so far. xMEMs is interesting and I’d like to compare with my GL-AMT16 for detail, but I have a feeling it’ll be a while before they get tuning down pat.
I doubt Polygonhell’s comment was meant to be rude in any way, he sounded sympathetic and he even shared a part of his personal life that he didn’t have to share. I’m sorry you have to go through this, I’ve also had to go through some very severe health problems recently and it can all get very stressful at times.
Alrighty, I just finished my first review out of… checks notes… 18?! What the hell was I thinking…
Anyways, it is a pretty nice creative outlet so I’m looking forward to sucking less at this as I get more practice.
Maybe you can answer this, Sony’s website states:
“DSD Remastering Engine
PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) audio is resampled into an 11.2MHz DSD (Direct Stream Digital) ultra-high-frequency 1-bit audio stream. The single-bit stream delivered to the DAC has a character far closer to that of analogue, giving you even more ways to enjoy your music.”
Does that mean that it converts and upsamples into DSD by default, or is this a selectable option?
All DS dacs convert PCM to DSD in effect.
The Sony DAC/Amps have an unusual topology as I understand it, it’s basically a high powered DSD DAC section, rather than a dac that produces an analog signal that’s then amplified.
I’ve always assumed Chord does something similar, but I’ve never seen it confirmed, it’s one of those devices that’s always intrigued me.
I’ve accomplished my goal last year of not spending much at all on audio. Only spent a little bit on a device called a turn up tech. And really allowed me to just sit there and appreciate the gear I have and it’s been great. I want to continue that but this year want to spend a little bit of cash and finally get a record player
Yeah, it’s very interesting.
I’ve been focusing on portability recently and the Sony is a front runner. Unfortunately reviews are few and far between so it’s something I may end up having to blind-buy.
- upgrade my stock 3es elite tubes
- upgrade dac
- sell shit im not using
- try to find something to beat shang and fail
You may be able to get some decent Sony dap info here.
Sweet! Thank you.
I’m having a damned difficult time setting aside any real audio money/ funds lately. Keeping a roof over my head with working HVAC, plumbing, appliances etc that have hit the 20 yr mark has wiped me out. Everything randomly chose to break down all around the same time and even though I had planned a minor remodel the cost of shit tripled by the time anyone had any product or time to provide their services
So it seems this year will be spent trading, bartering, and looking through obituaries and hunting down widows if I want to drag anything interesting into the house. It shall be random finds that pique my interest and can be had for pennies or less cause dammit, gas just broke $4 per gallon again. LOL I know I sound like the worst kind of person but at least I don’t buy this stuff to flip, I really do want fun pieces i find interesting. Heck, if I could read a wiring schematic and actually solder worth a lick I’d buy nice old stuff that needs repairs and a re-fresh…
Ugh, It’s time to make small tweaks and just enjoy what’s in hand, 2023 has battered me to a financial pulp
Rant over, first world problems, folks got real problems to worry about not this silliness
I feel your pain, as the year has progressed the finances have gotten a lot tougher for me too.
Re $4 gas; I’m not sure where you live, I’d be thrilled with $4! I’m in the Seattle area, and the greater metro are here has the highest gas prices in the nation!
It fluctuates around $5, just cracked it recently, and it’s a lot more in parts of Seattle proper.
I just read through my post here about my 2023 goals.
What a naive, nay, clueless, NO… MORONIC idea that I’d get through 2023 with little to no “real” money spent. I’m like $7K in additional money thrown at my 2-CH alone. I say additional because I sold thousands of dollars worth of gear while I was at it so I could stretch. This hobby, oy vey.
Anyway, at least my;
goal has already been met and exceeded. New album count up by 64 and 13 new artists and we’re only at the mid year mark!
@NickMimi financially beat to a pulp but you always find money to buy new tubes!
