Oh, yah. We 100% are. Implimemtayion matters more than decoder and I agree with that. I just get warm fuzzies seeing crazy shit like rockna/holo/tambaqui internals when we start talking well nroth of 2k.
I get what you are going for but this feels off base comparison wise. The huracan has a custom engine still designed by lambo, it just has audi stamps on it. The r8 and huracan engines are ultimately fairly different. The lotus one feels a lot more relevant though. Cause uts not about the engine, you just need something “good enough” and everything around it is awesome.
Rofl, yup. I logically know better, but I still frown slightly when I see off the shelf chios in nice dacs regardless. I just get over that feeling by going “no, dumb reaction” and moving on
I dont have dsd to try but everything 3lse is working brilliantly! I’m not gunna lie, I saw those pinout maps and my brain just 100% shutdown for a bit…
Great, glad you can use the su2 and sagra together. The pinouts are a bit annoying to read through and figure out what the right setting is but I’m sort of used to it from figuring out how to connect my pi2aes to my Pontus II.
@M0N Have you heard the Bricasti MC1? I’m close to finally making this dac purchase to pair with the Formula S and now the Volot that I also have.
The MC1 is in the “professional” Bricasti lineup and appears to be an m1 without a preamp and display. It’s also 6k which is right around the max price I’m considering at the moment. I’m trying to figure out if it has the same upgrades (MDx etc) as their “consumer” dacs like the m1/m3/m21.
If I don’t get the MC1 then it’ll either be May KTE, Sagra, or maybe a Lampizator Amber or Baltic but I’m mostly set on not yet exploring tubes
Ok, I’ve asked about it in a few places and there’s no one who’s heard it. I just reached out to a company that carries to see if I could get more info on it so hopefully that works out.
Well I ended up with an MC1 since I found a demo unit for sale over the weekend. Cost was $4500, not sure if that’s a good price or not but it’s about 75% of the cost of a new unit. This is getting a bit off topic since the threads have been merged but I now have a nicer dac to pair with my Formula S + Powerman and Volot.
Brief impressions from earlier today, this was a cold start straight out of the box, but I assume the dac is pretty well broken in since it’s a demo unit. Sound is more lively with better bass control and texture. Timbre seems a bit more real and separation / layering seems improved. Depth might be a bit less than the Pontus but switching to the linear filter seemed to help here. These are kind of vague statements but the general feel I got from the dac was a sense of clarity with good dynamics. I’ve left the dac on since it’s been here and I will listen more tonight.
If I should put this somewhere else since it’s not exactly related to the title of this thread since the merge let me know. Here’s a picture of the dac in my audio rack:
If you change your mind and go towards Lampi tubes, there is a good wealth of information and experience here for tube choice. We can also direct you to other resources that others have done the legwork already.
I wouldn’t shy away too much from tubes. I personally believe it is worth the trouble.
