Im assuming the answer is just they were available used, but if not, why the 50s over levante/25/100SE/any other option? Have a friend considering a levante for sus currently so kinda currious.
Fair enough. TBH I feel like that real bombastic sound with any actual power behind it is a real PITA to find. I like that kind of sound and was thinking about it recently and the options seem super limited.
makes sense. Im assuming their dedicated HP amp is still a ways out?
hahahaha. I kinda assumed the more mfg meddling and tweaking the better tbh
Because they were available at a good price for me, if I were buying new I likely would have gone 25 or levante (but also considered 50), I didn’t want to spend 100se prices. Also was specifically looking at power amps so levante was something I was less interested in, wanted to go the pre+power route over int
They remote into your system/network to configure it, and seemingly don’t want you poking around in there either
have a koda k15ex, check my profile bio for how things currently look (although I put the AC in there because I’m prob going to pull the trigger, but pulled the trigger on everything else)
There shall be another pair of speakers added at some point. No idea which ones yet but sensitivity will be very high and transducer quality will be best I can afford. Contemplating a DIY design possibly to save $$$$ on the build, materials, dealer sales mark-up & design costs and veneer.
I’m a big fan of retro games and I find my brain comparing it to audio sometimes. For example, I have a 4K HDR TV in the living room and I have some modern consoles plugged into it, but in my office, I have two CRT TVs connected.
It’s maybe obvious that I wouldn’t want to watch an HDR movie on the CRTs in my office (even on a quite high-end CRT), but for the other way around, here’s an example image of what a retro game might look like on each of the two systems (courtesy of the CRT Pixels Twitter account):
The image on the right clearly has much more prominent “non-image” content, but in this specific context, it’s the image that I’d strongly prefer looking at. (For a lot of reasons: some is admittedly nostalgia for having grown up with tube TVs, but some is the perceived contrast and texture and dimension.)
A lot of what I started off chasing in the hobby were things like resolution and space; and while I still have some clear upgrades on the table, I’m pretty happy with my chain overall. A lot of times my chain sounds wonderful and addictive: I’ve started listening to a song at midnight and then unintentionally stayed up until 3am. But there are also times where I feed my chain a song and it can kinda feel like I’m playing an unfiltered retro game on a 4K TV, and it just feels a bit flat and I’m seeing all the sharp edges.
(lol, I don’t think I’m making any sense, maybe I’ll come back to this question again later)
I am also quite happy with my setup at the moment.
If I were to nitpick, I would like the system to lean towards my highest priorities a bit more. It’s one of those things that going too far will be quite noticeable though, so it will become a delicate balance.
At this point, the stage is where I like it. I can probably use a touch more, but I don’t want it to go unnaturally large either. More importantly, I would like more accurate imaging and sharper lines to the “visual representation” or less diffusion around the edges.
The speed and transients is probably where I like it, but I do have a tiny bit of room for a touch more if it happens naturally trying to improve my imaging.
Ultimately, the thing I would need to improve is adding diffusion panels to my setup. I think that would spread out my stage, even it out a bit more, and add some liveliness back in.
I had just finished warming things up tonight when i decided to run upstairs and put some pj’s on so i could be most comfy for my evening wind down listening session. Next thing i know an hour has passed, i’ve made myself comfy on the balcony setae and I’m enjoying what feels like a performance at a professional venue. Absolutely lovely, i think i have found a second seating position for my main room, there’s nothing much “audiophile” about it but the sound was genuinely grand, relaxing, and well, very “life-like”. Honestly simply like enjoying a live band off a balcony seat. I’ll call this a win tonight, if nothing else it was such a very pleasant and relaxing session
I think i have a second seat to mess around w/ now
