I think the 204 is the best way to get the full Weiss experience without all the extra features that som don’t want or need. I remember reading or seeing something about it and it piqued my interest
I recall @Thibf was waiting to get one a while back, don’t recall hearing about his thoughts as he was going to compare it to an Amber 3.
I haven’t listened to the Amber 3 but had the Weiss 204 in my system for 5 day demo. I liked it so much I actually ordered one, waiting for it to come in. It is very smooth, detailed and non fatiguing. Tried it with 4 different USB cables and liked the Synergistic Research Foundation SX cable the best. Others were Cardas Clear, Purist Design and DH Labs Mirage. Great little DAC, not much to it but performs very well.
Hello users
I’ve recently joined the forum.
I’d pre ordered Weiss 205 few months back from vintage king. Still waiting for delivery.
Apparently, Weiss have moved on to new boards for 204/205 from August onwards. I hope they have a look at golden’s measurements.
There’s nothing really horrendous in there, so I’d worry more about how it sounds, his articles fall into the same trap as anyone measurement focused.
Too eager to compare measurements without any real discussion of if they matter and what the real world ramifications of them are to how the device sounds.
It’s fine if you take the article for what it is, a discussion of measurements, but it’s not a review of a the product.
I like articles like that as they tend to lower the price of the item in the used market.
Do they mention what it will actually drive?
The load from an amp is usual 20K Ohms plus, which requires an output impedance ~ <1000 Ohms and less than 100uA to drive.
To drive headphones effectively, you need to be orders of magnitude better than that. You can get that easily enough with just an op-amp on the output, but that won’t let you drive anything power hungry.
I’ll ask Daniel about the adapters.
The only dac that I’ve tried that could drive headphones out of the back of it that I might actually consider worthwhile would be the kassandra ii, and that put about 240mw at 150 ohms or 200 at 300 off it’s xlr line level out, but it couldn’t really handle anything under 100 ohms well. And really if you’re getting a dac of that caliber, it’s just more worthwhile to get an amp of that caliber and get much more out of the headphones. Volume control also becomes a challenge
Very brief comparison of 204 vs other dacs
Effect of Plixir LPS on 204
Ttvjaudio have a loaner program!
@Thibf
Saw your banner. Do you own the 204?
If so, do you mind sharing your impressions?
I was looking at the 204, but now that I got a better DDC Im leaning towards the 205.
I’m wondering if the performance of the Weiss 204 as a unit is related to having the DDC INT204. If we take a look at the int204 it is priced at 1430$, close to the Mutec MC3+, and lower than the Alpha USB. I recently got the Holo Red and it increased the performance of my DAC substantially. Now I want to try all (Weiss DAC204, DAC205, and INT204) and see where the magic is coming from. Is the DAC itself? the DAC+DDC? or just the DDC? I don’t think it would be possible for me to try all of them, but if someone is curious about this let me know. I reached out to TTVJAudio, I’m asking how is the loan going and the estimated dates. I might sign up for the loan if the week aligns with my schedule.
The DAC204 is supposed to be the DAC205 and INT204 together. But, I think there could be better performance if we do something like the DAC205 and INT204 adding separate power supplies(More money obviously). But, there is also the direct physical I2S connection (Supposedly, read somewhere) inside the DAC204, a shorter route, and so on.
Did you end up signing up for the loaner?
They haven’t reply my email yet. If you want to go and join the loaner go ahead!
I was waiting for a date estimate confirmation, dont want to be on a loaner and be stuck with work or something.
Finally got 205. Vintage king offered some mind blowing prices in June before August hike.
Excellent support. Recommended.
Expecting some thoughts on it after a couple of weeks use!
I love the form factor on that, seems great for desktop use.
