Weiss thread, DAC1 / DAC2 / DAC202 / DAC501-2 / MAN301 / Medus / INT204

Good catch! I actually twisted it back after the pic!

Totally worth it.

Hi,

as I’ll upgrade my DAC501 to the DAC501-4ch - PDF - I’d just an Email conversation with Daniel Weiss.

Update price without VAT: sFr 1820 (US$ 1870)

They are struggling with getting components (surprise), but he expects delivery in the next 3 weeks and than I’m on the waiting list. He confirmed the new analog output stage will have the ES9038PRO.

They are still producing new 501/502, but with the 4ch - so there will be not a complete new model. Sure price will go up, I assume.

That’s actually not bad. Reading through the document (which finally spells out exactly what they’re doing) there are a few genuinely worthwhile funtions there that I’m sure will come with some potential DSP magic should one want to delve into it.

I think given that only two things available for the 50X that you wouldn’t even have to send the DAC in. The analogue board is a cinch to switch out in the 502 due to the larger chassis.

I had to take out the the mainboard to get to a couple of screws when I switched the front plate on mine. Not for the faint of heart, and NOT for someone without a properly grounded anti-static mat and bracelet.

For under $2k it may be something to consider in the future.

The team behind the Series 5 units (DAC501, DAC502, DAC501-4ch, DAC502-
4ch, DSP501, DSP502):
Daniel Weiss, hardware design
Rolf Anderegg, Isabelle Kernhof, software design
Joschka Weiss, algorithm testing, sonic optimization (crossfeed, DAC section)
Jakob Schiesser, PCB layout and mechanical design
Claude Gugolz, manufacturing
Laurin Eicher, production testing

This is also a pretty class thing to do in their brochure acknowledging the entire team.

BTW: Joschka Weiss is very responsive on LinkedIn (almost realtime  and very helpful as the whole Weiss crew! (50) Joschka Weiss | LinkedIn

@gerihifi now that you’ve had the weiss for awhile, how has it been so far? Also, any comparisons or notes vs your time with the merason?

I stil need to improve my streaming source (external Lumin mini U2). I tried the Weiss with UPnP (dont have yet any roon core, like to avoid it ;-), sound a bit more detailed. Mconnect App is similar nightmare than Lumin App.

I’ve to say, if I go for an R2R DAC, Merason Dac1 I’d go right away, almost detailed as Weiss, but not so extremly ā€˜neutral’ than the 501, slightly warmer tonality (would be very interested to see Denafrips Terminator Plus comparison!).

So 501 4ch upgrade is ongoing ( hopefully done by beginning of next month) and Lumin will get next week finally the new Hypsos Ferrum PSU.

I like the Weiss, definitely a good choice!

The small green computer lps mod works well on my lumin doesnt help software though.

Update: just added Ferrum Hypsos this morning to Lumin Mini U2.

I’ve to say: I’m impressed, I wasn’t expected really too much hearable difference - worthwhile to add!
So now with the 4ch Upgrade, very excited it improves even more

It’s always about better power. :+1:

Nice, I was always surprised at what a nicer psu could do for digital upstream gear like streamers, ddc, reclockers/regenerators, switches, etc. Sounds like a nice upgrade :+1:

Have you discussed this already with them? Do you know if the process is to send the unit in or will they simply send you an upgraded analogue section out and you return the old one?

You send the unit to them, usually it takes 3-4 days. Here you pay €1.890 + VAT.
Daniel put me on the waiting list, once they get their chipsets.

So just send them an Email. I also asked Joschka Weiss about the upgrade, he was quite excited  so lets see…

Something that reminded me of you @M0N in what Weiss said is a potential for their 50X quad upgrade. Talking about the splitting DACs reminded me of it.

Huh actually never thought of doing that, although if there would be actual value in doing that, I don’t know

I’d bet it would make a room sound bigger, you already get some of that with the time skew between the direct signal from the speakers and the reflections of the walls, you’re adding an even more direct path, and I’m not sure how the brain would interpret that.
But I’d guess it would sound more open.

This has accidentally happened to me when I had powered speakers on my desktop and was using headphones. Using the Burson Conductor, I was routing my DAC through the headphone pre because I never liked the DAC in the conductor and had XLR connected out of the Burson to feed the powered monitors. Sometimes I’d forget I was listening to speakers, or had the volume muted, put on headphones and raised the volume and was like… wait, something’s not sounding as expected.

Wearing open headphones was one thing, headphones like the Myshere though would be the way though.

Anyone own or spent much time with a DAC202? I see one on TMR and am curious on value, given MSRP. Somewhat tempting.

Every time I’ve seen one it’s been over $2K so that’s a better starting point. The Firewire stuff doesn’t move and if you don’t need USB, give them a low ball offer see what they come back with. I know, for a desktop at that price it’s going to be hard to find anything near that quality.

I’d have to think the signature would be in the same Wiess family since they have a pro forward image. Wait for M0N to chime in I guess.
