Which of your headphones synergised well with it?
So far have been most impressed with it on the d8kp and th900, really also nice with the adx5k, surprisingly good with the susvara for what it is. Utopia and mysphere are a miss so far, as are 600s and 880 600s
If I had to guess what would be a good pairing but haven’t tested myself, I’d bet it’s pretty awesome with some planar like a hekse, dv2, audeze lcd series, and some dynamics like hd800s, grado rs and ps series, actually perhaps zmf
Switched to push-pull mode from SE on the MJ3 tonight for the first time. What differences should I be listening for? It sounds equally excellent at first listen.
I’m using a Yggy A2 and Meze Elite with balanced connections throughout. I have the amp set to low gain and no feedback.
I’m also interested to know if high gain is worth experimenting with if I never go over 11:00 on the volume dial in low gain. I’ve read a few impressions from people saying they preferred high or low gain, but as far as I can tell it just changes where I have the volume knob positioned.
Getting closer to finishing up this comparison between the MJ3 and BHA-1, but wanted to say, man the MJ3 is a really good amp for the money. The detail its pulling is insane to me. And I think I may have been harsh on it’s layering capabilities. It’s rather good when I finally wrote down some notes comparing the two vs just going off memory after a amp swap.
So I was able to end the vibration on the Mjolnir. Added some Sound Addicted (Amazon) rubber ball feet under the amp. Had them laying around. This also raises it to help with heat on the bottom. But what really helped was the weight on top. It’s gone. Soooo aUdiOphiLe!
They should put the Lyr pot in the MJ3.
Lyr has 64-step relay ladder volume control.
Maybe it would fit?
The Lyr is a sweet little amp, IMO.
It’s doesn’t change that much with tube swaps, but no hybrid really does. Just enough tube goodness to sweeten things up.
Yeah, this amp is impresse me every time I use it. I go back and forth on whether I prefer single-ended or push-pull, but I am sticking with high gain and no feedback. My Elite sounds as good as I’ve ever heard it with this amp. Layering of vocals has really been a stand-out to me. I can easily track each voice in a harmony. I think this amp is really great for the money.
I’m curious if you’ve tried pre amping the Mjolnir with the Serene? I think that would be interesting since you can use the SE out from Serene and keep the Tyres connected via balanced.
I wonder if that would allow you to hear what the Serene may be doing for the Tyres.
Do you know what’s in it now? Alps Blue Velvet?
No, but I think I’ll be ok unless someone else tries a mod and says it’s worth the time and upgrade.
Adding a schiit kara preamp (128 stepped) is worth trying maybe
It’s something I can try for sure. I’ve been a bit distracted since I have an HM-1 on demo. MJ3 competes pretty well so that will be an interesting comparison to do more in depth. But I will try MJ3 with Serene at some point you might have to remind me though
Haha. All good.
I’ll ask again later in the week.
Just set this up as @M.J was asking about it as well. I will test with Kara first and then with Serene and probably against Tyrs as well as you requested. Hopefully will have some initial thoughts this evening.
Lol the weight on top seems mandatory now
It does help tame the vibrations as do the feet I put on. I had that weight on my Tyrs, I have two on each, but have ordered a 5th one so I can have it on all of my Schiit.
So I’m trying the Kara as a preamp to MJ3 and I don’t hear a difference. I’ve connected it with balanced out of the Meitner MA3 to kara and kara out over xlr to mj3. Single ended output of dac is feeding single ended input of mj3 so I can easily compare preamped to without a preamp with the input selector switch on the amp. I’ve compared the single ended and balanced outputs of the dac and they sound the same apart from a volume difference.
I’m actually surprised, I thought the Kara would change something. I’ve tried all 3 modes on the Kara, passive, active, and active high gain. I’ve also toggled the switches for gain, push pull and feedback and that didn’t impact a difference between preamped and not preamped.
I’ll try with Serene later today. And probably another set of headphones too. I’m kind of disappointed . It’s not the hmm maybe there’s a slight difference with how this is presented like with a dac comparison, it literally sounds identical. But I’ll experiment more later.
