Schiit Folkvangr

I need to test that out. I have the freya + just next to it on my desk but have not used the pre outs of the Folkvanger yet

Nope I still have mine.

I tried out the Folkvanger as a preamp to my Tyrs yesterday and enjoyed it. Both my Folkvanger and Freya+ are using the same NOS Philips 7062 tubes via adapters. Folkvanger took single ended from dac and went single ended to the Tyrs. Freya was balanced from dac to amp. So the better IMO balanced output of my dac could be part of the change I’m describing below too.

Basically I think the Freya sounded a bit better overall, soundstage increased and the sound cleared up. With the Folkvanger the sound just had a thickness to it and I liked the improved clarity when switching to the Freya. However the one minor annoyance I have with the Freya is the volume control since it’s relay based it sometimes makes the tube ring a bit when adjusting the volume and the relays click. I don’t have that issue with the Folkvanger since it just has a basic volume control (think it’s an alps pot). In terms of tube noise they were about the same with the Folkvanger in low gain but in high gain the hum and noise rose to bothersome levels and I didn’t have much volume travel before getting too loud.

So the preamp in the Folkvanger is nice to have. I would take the Freya over it but if you want the hp / tube pre combo than the Folkvanger is a good buy.

Maybe I missed it, but have you talked about the Tyrs already? How are you liking them?

This is all I’ve said about them so far. Maybe we can start a new thread for that. Need to see if there’s a schiit speaker amp thread or I will just make a new one.
